A series of [2.2] spirocyclic complexes [Ln5(LH)4(η1-Piv)(η2-Piv)3(μ2–η2 η1Piv)2(H2O)]·Cl (Ln = DyIII, TbIII and HoIII) were synthesized. Magnetic analysis reveals that the DyIII analogue showed slow relaxation of magnetization.

Unprecedented Cu–Ln heterometallic chains derived from poly-dentate nitronyl nitroxides are reported. A Tb complex shows slow magnetic relaxation, while a Dy derivative displays interesting two-step relaxations of magnetization.

The cyanoacetate complexes, {[Ln2(CNCH2COO)6(H2O)4]·2H2O}n, with Ln = Gd, Nd, show field-induced slow relaxation: resonant phonon trapping and Orbach process for Gd, and Orbach and direct processes for Nd.

Three tetranuclear lanthanide cages featuring either hemicubane (1 and 2) or distorted hemicubane (3) like cores are reported. Magnetic studies reveal significant magnetic entropy changes for complex 1 and a slow relaxation of magnetisation for 3.

Three chiral dinuclear lanthanide compounds, Ln2(µ2-L)4(L)2(phen)2 (Ln = Dy (1), Gd (2), and Er (3); phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been synthesized using the (S)-(+)-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid (HL) ligand. The two lanthanide centres in compound Ln2(µ2-L)4(L)2(phen)2 are bridged by four carboxylate groups to give a dinuclear Ln2(µ2-L)4 core. The square antiprismatic coordination environment for each lanthanide centre is further completed by a chelating carboxylate group from another L– ligand and two nitrogen atoms from the phen ligand. A weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the two GdIII ions is observed in compound 2. The Dy analogue displays field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour with an effective energy barrier Ueff/k of 17.24(2) K and a pre-exponential factor τ0 of 2.7(1) × 10–6 s. However, no slow relaxation phenomenon was observed for the Er derivative even in the presence of 2 kOe applied field.

Two penta-coordinate [Co(Ln)(NCS)]ClO4 with substituted pyridyl based bispyrazolyl ligands have been structurally characterized. The complexes show an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, large rhombicity and slow relaxation of magnetization.
