The present review describes the most relevant advances dealing with supramolecular catalysis in which metalloporphyrins are employed as substrate-recognition sites in the second coordination sphere of the catalyst. The kinetically-labile interaction between metalloporphyrins (typically, those derived from zinc) and nitrogen- or oxygen-containing substrates is energetically comparable to those non-covalent interactions (i.e. hydrogen bonding) found in enzymes enabling substrate-preorganization. Much inspired from this host-guest phenomena, the catalytic systems described in this account display unique activities, selectivities and action modes difficult to reach applying purely covalent strategies.

The total and partial densities of electronic states of gold monolayer structures of different symmetry are calculated by the quantum mechanical calculations methods in the DFT approximation. It is shown that the first coordination sphere is determinant in the formation of the fine structure and the extent of the valence bands of the monolayer gold structures under study. The peaks splitting of the TDOS curve, which leads to its finer structure, is influenced not only by the lengths of interatomic bonds but also by the mutual arrangement of atoms. The influence of long-range interactions on the electronic structure of gold monolayers has been established. For example, for the (110) plane, a change in the atomic ordering in the third coordination sphere as a result of the introduction of a vacancy leads to noticeable changes in the TDOS curve, which indicates either a significant role of the atoms of the third coordination sphere or a significant redistribution of the interaction of d-orbitals of different symmetries of close neighbours. A correlation between the packing density, as well as the number of neighbours in the first coordination sphere, and the width of the energy band of gold monolayers has been established.

Two diradical complexes of the formula [LnRad2(CF3SO3)3] c (Ln(III) = Dy, Eu, Rad = 4,4-dimethyl-2,2-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-oxazolidine-3-oxyl) were obtained in air conditions. These are the first examples of diradical compounds of lanthanides and oxazolidine nitroxide. The complexes were characterized crystallographically and magnetically. Single crystal XRD analysis revealed that their coordination sphere is composed of three monodentate triflates and two tripodal Rad, which coordinate the central atom in a tridentate manner via two N atoms of the pyridine groups and the O atom of a nitroxide group. The LnO5N4 polyhedron represents a spherical capped square antiprism with point symmetry close to C4v. The data of static magnetic measurements are compatible with the presence of two paramagnetic ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal.

The PdII central atom in the title complex, [PdCl(C26H24P2)(C6H6N2O)]NO3·CH3CN or [PdCl(dppe)(INAM)]NO3·CH3CN, where dppe is 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane and INAM is isonicotinamide, exists in a slightly distorted square-planar environment defined by the two P atoms of the dppe ligand, a chloride ligand and the N atom of the isonicotinamide pyridyl ring. The crystal packing in the structure is held together by hydrogen bonds between the amide of the INAM ligand and the nitrate ions that complete the outer coordination sphere. A molecule of acetonitrile is also found in the asymmetric unit of the title complex.
