A Comprehensive Model for Medical Information Processing

At first sight, the many applications of computers in medicine—from payroll and registration systems to computerized tomography, intensive care and diagnostics—do make a rather chaotic impression. The purpose of this article is to propose a scheme or working model for putting medical information systems in order. The model comprises six »levels of complexity«, running parallel to dependence on human interaction. Several examples are treated to illustrate the scheme. The reason why certain computer applications are more frequently used than others is analyzed. It has to be strongly considered that the differences in complexity and dependence on human involvement are not accidental but fundamental. This has consequences for research and education which are also discussed.

e-Health considers the healthcare environment as an electronic workspace where different Medical Information Systems (MIS) supports the automation of information processing, the exchange of medical and administrative data and the automation of medical workflow. AAL systems are MISs of special purposes that use wireless technology to provide healthcare to citizens. By their nature AAL systems are totally distributed, they include various medical and other users’ devices and the mobility of people increases their complexity and creates advanced requirements for the communication of data. Effectiveness and functionality of AAL premise interoperability at all levels of communication. In this chapter the definitions of interoperability are examined and how these are specialized for the healthcare area as well. In addition, the applied technologies and some significant issues that regard interoperability are analyzed.

There is no question that relatively small telescopes are powerful tools for astronomy, just as they always have been. With the new detectors and full usage of computers, they have become even more powerful, enabling us to do with a one-meter aperture telescope today more than 4-meter or 5-meter telescopes could do only a few decades ago. And the small ones cost a lot less to build and operate than the large ones. As such, small telescopes are the main hope for observing time for the many astronomers worldwide who need them as part of their research (or educational) tools. They can make a major impact on many areas of research and will be of great value for scientific education as well. Astronomy is very interesting to students and to the general public, not just to astronomers. Furthermore, most areas of astronomical research are data poor and more telescopes are needed to effectively attack the problems. Only a very few of us have adequate telescope time for our research or educational needs.
