In this article Lynn Mally examines the efforts of a Comintern affiliate called MORT (Mezhdunarodnoe ob“edinenie revoliutsionnykh teatrov) to export models of Soviet theatrical performance outside the Soviet Union. Beginning with the first Five-Year Plan, MORT was initially very successful in promoting Soviet agitprop techniques abroad. But once agitprop methods fell into disgrace in the Soviet Union, MORT abruptly changed its tactics. It suddenly encouraged leftist theater groups to move toward the new methods of socialist realism. Nonetheless, many leftist theater circles continued to produce agitprop works, as shown by performances at the Moscow Olympiad for Revolutionary Theater in 1933. The unusual tenacity of this theatrical form offers an opportunity to question the global influence of the Soviet cultural policies promoted by the Comintern. From 1932 until 1935, many foreign theater groups ignored MORT's cultural directives. Once the Popular Front began, national communist parties saw artistic work as an important tool for building alliances outside the working class. This decisive shift in political strategy finally undermined the ethos and methods of agitprop theater.

In a discussion of low temperature phenomena it may be assumed that we are dealing chiefly with the properties of materials at temperatures that can be reached by the use of liquid helium. Until 1923 liquid helium had been United States of America, in Canada, in England, in Germany, and in the Soviet Union as well as in Holland. New Methods of Liquefying Helium Since 1932 two notable advances have been made in the design of apparatus for the production of liquid helium. The equipment developed by Simon and Mendelssohn and installed in the Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford represents one of them. Liquid helium is produced at a low cost, but in very small amounts, by a discontinuous process in which the cooling is produced by the adiabatic by Simon and his associates, by the desorption of helium gas from charcoal.

Creating of Ukrainian SSR’ foreign policy department during the Soviet constitutional reform in 1944, whatever the true motives and intentions of official Kremlin policy, – systemic great strategy, tactical move, situational political maneuvering or diplomatic farce, – had a positive consequence. After more than two decades of forced interruption, the concept of «State Ukraine» appeared in diplomatic correspondence the Ukrainian SSR formally acquired the status of a subject of international law and was the «initial member» of the United Nations. The very fact of «the republic’s emergence in the international arena» certainly contributed to the growth of national consciousness of Ukrainians, feeling them myself nation that is worth full representation in the international community. «First among equals» the Soviet Union republic was collaborating with international life, gradually formed its own corps of skilled diplomats, that gained experience of employment activities in international organizations, mastered new methods and the art of negotiation, the ethics of international communication, realized the strength and weakness of the Kremlin diplomacy and simultaneously observed visually slighted status of the Ukrainian SSR in foreign policy. The deep sense of a unique Ukrainian «drift» to international life could not to eviscerate any sophisticated Kremlin filters. The article spotlights the role of D. Manuilsky in launching the «golden age of Ukrainian Soviet diplomacy», whose best achievements diplomatic service of independent Ukraine is developing.
