A method for reconstructing the 12 C (p, p′) 12 C *(1†) amplitudes in the transverse frame (without using phase-shift analysis) is suggested. We show that by supplementing the eight existing measurements on 12 C (p, p′) 12 C *(1†) with a carefully chosen set of measurements on 12 C (p, p′γ)12 C , it is possible to determine the scattering amplitudes, completely free from discrete ambiguities. We also provide alternative equivalent sets, which may be employed depending on the experimental constraints, to determine the amplitudes.
