Abstract We consider an inverse scattering problem of recovering the unknown coefficients of a quasi-linearly perturbed biharmonic operator in the three-dimensional case. These unknown complex-valued coefficients are assumed to satisfy some regularity conditions on their nonlinearity, but they can be discontinuous or singular in their space variable. We prove Saito’s formula and uniqueness theorem of recovering some essential information about the unknown coefficients from the knowledge of the high frequency scattering amplitude.

Abstract We review unitarity and crossing constraints on scattering amplitudes for particles with spin in four dimensional quantum field theories. As an application we study two to two scattering of neutral spin 1/2 fermions in detail. Assuming Mandelstam analyticity of its scattering amplitude, we use the numerical S-matrix bootstrap method to estimate various non-perturbative bounds on quartic and cubic (Yukawa) couplings.

Abstract We derive the classical gravitational radiation from an aligned spin binary black hole on closed orbits, using a dictionary built from the 5-point QFT scattering amplitude of two massive particles exchanging and emitting a graviton. We show explicitly the agreement of the transverse-traceless components of the radiative linear metric perturbations — and the corresponding gravitational wave energy flux — at future null infinity, derived from the scattering amplitude and those derived utilizing an effective worldline action in conjunction with multipolar post-Minkowskian matching. At the tree-level, this result holds at leading orders in the black holes’ velocities and up to quadratic order in their spins. At sub-leading order in black holes’ velocities, we demonstrate a matching of the radiation field for quasi-circular orbits in the no-spin limit. At the level of the radiation field, and to leading order in the velocities, there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the binary black hole mass and current quadrupole moments, and the scalar and linear-in-spin scattering amplitudes, respectively. Therefore, we show explicitly that waveforms, needed to detect gravitational waves from inspiraling binary black holes, can be derived consistently, to the orders considered, from the classical limit of quantum scattering amplitudes.

Abstract We give new formulas for finding the complex (phased) scattering amplitude at fixed frequency and angles from absolute values of the scattering wave function at several points $x_1,..., x_m$. In dimension $d\geq 2$, for $m>2$, we significantly improve previous results in the following two respects. First, geometrical constraints on the points needed in previous results are significantly simplified. Essentially, the measurement points $x_j$ are assumed to be on a ray from the origin with fixed distance $\tau=|x_{j+1}- x_j|$, and high order convergence (linearly related to $m$) is achieved as the points move to infinity with fixed $\tau$. Second, our new asymptotic reconstruction formulas are significantly simpler than previous ones. In particular, we continue studies going back to [Novikov, Bull. Sci. Math. 139(8), 923-936, 2015].

Abstract Low-temperature Raman scattering is used to study the crystal structure of molecular-beam epitaxially grown layers of the Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 and its related alloy (Cd1-xZnx)3As2. The combination of narrow-linewidth spectra, multiple growth directions and full polarization analysis allows improved accuracy in identifying the irreducible representation of over 57 Raman-active vibrations. Several disagreements with previous identifications are found. Structurally, the results agree with the centrosymmetric I41/acd space group of bulk-grown Cd3As2 and are clearly distinct from the Raman spectra of nanoscale platelets and wires. 3-fold twinning is seen in (112) Cd3As2 grown on (111) zincblende substrates corresponding to the three possible tetragonal orientations. In dilute (Cd1-xZnx)3As2, phonons have a frequency and scattering amplitude dependence on Zn concentration that is continuous with Cd3As2 but at least one frequency is absent at the alloy endpoint, preventing a simple one-mode description of the alloy phonon.

A detailed study of positron impact elastic scattering from methane and silane is carried out using a model potential consisting of static and polarization potentials. The static potential for the molecular target is obtained analytically by using accurate Gaussian molecular wavefunctions. The molecular orbitals are expressed as a linear combination of Gaussian atomic orbitals. Along with the analytically obtained static potential, a correlation polarization potential is also added to construct the model potential. Utilizing the model potential, the Schrödinger equation is solved using the partial wave phase shift analysis method, and the scattering amplitude is obtained in terms of the phase shifts. Thereafter, the differential, integrated and total cross sections are calculated. These cross-section results are compared with the previously reported measurements and theoretical calculations.

AbstractWe propose a numerical method to approximate the scattering amplitudes for the elasticity system with a non-constant matrix potential in dimensions $$d=2$$ d = 2 and 3. This requires to approximate first the scattering field, for some incident waves, which can be written as the solution of a suitable Lippmann-Schwinger equation. In this work we adapt the method introduced by Vainikko (Res Rep A 387:3–18, 1997) to solve such equations when considering the Lamé operator. Convergence is proved for sufficiently smooth potentials. Implementation details and numerical examples are also given.

The Fourier transform of Cartesian Gaussian functions product is presented in the light of positron scattering. The calculation of this class of integrals is crucial in order to obtain the scattering amplitude in the first Born approximation framework for an ab initio method recently proposed. A general solution to the scattering amplitude is given to a molecular target with no restriction due to symmetry. Moreover, symmetry relations are presented with the purpose of identifying terms that do not contribute to the calculation for the molecules in the D∞h point group optimizing the computational effort. Since surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are surface waves, they cannot be excited by an incident plane wave, because free-space photons do not possess a sufficient in-plane momentum. Phase matching between the incident light and SPP can be achieved using a high-refractive-index prism, grating, or nanoantennas. In this work, we found an expression for the amplitude of SPP excited by an arbitrary 3D current distribution placed near a metal interface. The developed method is based on the well-known technique used in waveguide theory that enables finding the amplitudes of waveguide modes excited by the external currents. It reduces the SPP excitation problem to the summation of the set of emitters. As a particular example, we considered a spherical dipole nanoantenna on a metal substrate illuminated by a normally incident plane wave. The analytical calculations were in good agreement with the full-wave numerical simulations.
