The position of the ester groups in sesquiterpenic lactones laserolide (I) and isolaserolide (II) has been revised and its relative and absolute configuration determined by chemical and physical methods (NMR and CD spectroscopy). The structure I was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Laserolide (I) is the first germacranolide found in the Umbelliferae family, isolaserolide (II) is the first representative of new stereostructural group of elemanolides - 5βH,6αH,7αH,10αCH3-elema-1,3-dien-6,12-olides.

The diastereoselectivity of diazomethane addition to the conjugated double bond of α,β-unsaturated sesquiterpene lactones was explored using zaluzanin A (1) as a model. Thus, the absolute configuration of 1 was assured by X-ray diffraction analysis including evaluation of Flack and Hooft parameters, and by vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy of its diacetyl derivative 2, while the absolute configuration of the diazomethane addition product, zaluzanin A pyrazoline (3), was determined by evaluation of the 1H NMR chemical shift changes with respect to 1, and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, again including evaluation of Flack and Hooft parameters.

Racemates of (η3-allyl)tricarbonyliron lactone complex Fe(CO)3{η1:η3-C(O)XCH2CHCMeCH2} 1a (X = O) and (η3-allyl)tricarbonyliron lactam complex 2a (X = NMe) are resolved on a preparative scale by HPLC on cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenyl)carbamate/silica gel RP-8 and the absolute configuration of (-)-2a is determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis.
