The biannual mega-event of Terra Madre is now established as the political flagship of the Slow Food movement. It assembles in Turin the leading cosmopolitan figures of this neo-tribal, post modern organization, along with several thousand of its ordinary members, who were drawn in 2006 from the ranks of food producers, cooks and academics. The most significant secular rituals of Terra Madre involve the theatrical celebration of its global character, beginning with the assembly of representatives from some 1600 ““food communities”” distributed throughout the world. Equally important are the many smaller scale activities in which the details of the movement's politics are articulated and embellished, at times in strikingly rhetorical ways. In this paper, which is based on ethnographic research, the theatrical and rhetorical qualities of Terra Madre as a political spectacle are explored in some detail. It is argued, in conclusion, that what is inadvertently exposed are some of the political myths which lie at the core of the Slow Food movement's contemporary philosophy.

This essay explores how food activists in Italy purposely shape food and language to construct meaning and value. It is grounded in years of ethnographic fieldwork on food and culture in Italy and looks specifically at the Slow Food Movement. The essay explores language and food activism through a detailed unpacking of the text of a menu prepared for a restaurant dinner for delegates to the Slow Food National Chapter Assembly in 2009. The menu uses descriptive poetic language to construct an idealized folk cuisine steeped in local products, poverty, history, and peasant culinary traditions. As I explore the language of the menu and the messages communicated by the food, I ask if they intensify people’s activism, advance Slow Food’s goals of “good, clean and fair food,” and promote food democracy.

The concept of regional cooking plays a prominent part in the rhetoric of the Slow Food movement. But how is the notion of a regional cuisine translated into practice by the organizers of events which must satisfy the expectations of an informed and a discerning membership? This essay examines one such Australian event from an anthropological perspective. It is argued that ideas about region and community, heritage and tradition, the authentic and the original, were as carefully attended to by the organizers of Barossa Slow as the rich foods and fine wines that were put on the table. Particular attention is accorded to the part played by organized tours in which prominent artisans detailed the local materials, the well-tried technologies and the social relations which were brought together in the production of regionally specific foods and wines. In order to satisfy the cultural expectations of Slow Food's predominantly middle class membership, the manufacture of myth proved quite as significant as the consumption of cuisine in the success of this particular occasion.

This article studies ways in which the Slow Food movement creates spaces for political action and elaborates new normative systems, imagining new forms of economy. Taking quality consumption and production, respect for the environment, and the rights of small producers as its core aims, this movement has today become an actor in the larger debates concerning the problematics of food, agriculture and fishing. At the same time, Slow Food is a legitimate actor in spaces of political and social contestation and applies its philosophy of a sustainable economy (represented in the triad  'good, clean and fair') globally to defend local production. Slow Food makes gastronomic diversity an element of biological and environmental diversity. This article is based on fieldwork carried out since 2006 within the French and Italy networks of the movement and in its Italian headquarters. The article analyzes the interrelations between economy, legality and environment in some Slow Food projects such as the presidia projects. Through the presidia, the movement plays an active role in the production of new norms that permit the imagination of a moral economy of food.Keywords: Slow Food, norms, economy, typicity, food activism
