This article applies state variable techniques to high speed vehicle suspension design. When a reasonably complex suspension model is treated, the greater adaptability of state variable techniques to digital computer application makes it more attractive than the commonly used integral transform method. A vehicle suspension model is developed, state variable techniques are applied, numerical methods are presented, and, finally, an optimization algorithm is chosen to select suspension parameters. A fairly complete bibliography is included in each of these areas. The state variable technique is illustrated in the solution of two suspension optimization problems. First, the vertical plane suspension of a high speed vehicle subject to guideway and aerodynamic inputs will be analyzed. The vehicle model, including primary and secondary suspension systems, and subject to both heave and pitch motions, has thirteen state variables. Second, the horizontal plane suspension of a high speed vehicle subject to guideway and lateral aerodynamic inputs is analyzed. This model also has thirteen state variables. The suspension parameters of both these models are optimized. Numerical results are presented for a representative vehicle, showing time response, mean square values, optimized suspension parameters, system eigenvalues, and acceleration spectral densities.

A new dynamic model of railway vehicle moving on curved tracks is proposed. In this new model, the motion of the car body is considered and the motion of the tuck frame is not restricted by a virtual boundary. Based on the heuristic nonlinear creep model, the nonlinear coupled differential equations of the motion of a fourteen degrees of freedom car system, considering the lateral displacement and the yaw angle of the each wheelset, the truck frame and the car body, moving on curved tracks are derived in completeness. To illustrate the accuracy of the analysis, the limiting cases are examined. In addition, the influences of the suspension parameters on the critical hunting speeds evaluated via the linear and the nonlinear creep models respectively are studied. Furthermore, the influences of the suspension parameters on the critical hunting speeds evaluated via the fourteen degrees of freedom car system and the six degrees of freedom truck system, which the motion of the tuck frame is restricted by a virtual boundary, are compared.

We put forward the motor active flexible suspension and investigate its dynamic effects on the high-speed train bogie. The linear and nonlinear hunting stability are analyzed using a simplified eight degrees-of-freedom bogie dynamics with partial state feedback control. The active control can improve the function of dynamic vibration absorber of the motor flexible suspension in a wide frequency range, thus increasing the hunting stability of the bogie at high speed. Three different feedback state configurations are compared and the corresponding optimal motor suspension parameters are analyzed with the multi-objective optimal method. In addition, the existence of the time delay in the control system and its impact on the bogie hunting stability are also investigated. The results show that the three control cases can effectively improve the system stability, and the optimal motor suspension parameters in different cases are different. The direct state feedback control can reduce corresponding feed state's vibration amplitude. Suppressing the frame's vibration can significantly improve the running stability of bogie. However, suppressing the motor's displacement and velocity feedback are equivalent to increasing the motor lateral natural vibration frequency and damping, separately. The time delay over 10 ms in control system reduces significantly the system stability. At last, the effect of preset value for getting control gains on the system linear and nonlinear critical speed is studied.

Based on the heuristic nonlinear creep model, the nonlinear coupled differential equations of the motion of a 12 degree-of-freedom (12-DOF) bogie system which takes account of the lateral displacement, vertical displacement, the roll angle and the yaw angle of the each wheelset and the bogie frame, moving on curved tracks are derived. The nonlinear creep forces and moments are constructed via the saturation constant of the nonlinear creep model in completeness. The effect of the suspension parameters of a bogie system on the derailment quotient is investigated. Results obtained in this study show that the derailment quotient of a bogie system increases as the vehicle speed increases. In addition, the derailment quotient of a bogie system is generally decreased with the increasing values of suspension parameters.

A symmetric wheelset with an elasto-damper coupling between the wheels is used to investigate the effect of coupling and primary stiffness and damping on the vehicle critical speed. Different suspension parameters are considered. Stability boundaries for various conditions are presented. The dynamic model of the elasto-damper–coupled wheelset is validated using published results. Both coupler and primary suspensions can dramatically affect the vehicle stability, and optimal parameters can be used to improve the vehicle performance over that of the conventional system.
