Abstract Hollow-core negative curvature fibers (HC-NCFs) have become one of the research hotspots in the field of optical fiber because of its potential applications in the data and energy transmissions. In this paper, a new kind of single-polarization single-mode HC-NCF with nested U-type cladding elements is proposed. To achieve the single-polarization single-mode transmission, we use two different silica tube thicknesses that satisfy the resonance and anti-resonance conditions on the U-type cladding elements and the cladding tubes, respectively. Besides, the elliptical elements are introduced to achieve good single-mode performance. By studying the influences of the structure parameters on the propagation characteristics, the optimized structure parameters are obtained. The simulation results show that when the wavelength is located at 1550 nm, the single-polarization single-mode transmission is achieved, along with the polarization extinction ratio of 25749 and minimum high-order mode extinction ratio of 174. Furthermore, the confinement loss is only 0.0015 dB/m.

A novel in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on cascaded up-down-taper (UDT) structure is proposed by sandwiching a piece of polarization maintaining fiber between two single-mode fibers (SMF) and by utilizing over-fusion splicing method. The dual up tapers respectively act as fiber splitter/combiner, the down taper acts as an optical attenuator. The structure parameters are analyzed and optimized. A larger interference fringe extinction ratio ~15 dB is obtained to achieve refractive index (RI) sensing based on intensity demodulation. The experimental results show that the RI sensitivity is −310.40 dB/RIU with the linearity is improved to 0.99 in the range of 1.3164–1.3444. The corresponding resolution can reach 3.22 × 10−5 RIU, which is 6.8 times higher than wavelength demodulation. The cross sensitivity which caused by temperature fluctuation is less than 1.4 × 10−4.

To improve the propagation quality in photonic crystal fibers,a novel dual elliptical assistant holes hollow fiber is proposed. Numerical model of confinement loss has been modeled by vector finite element method, then the core loss characteristics and the power ratio of the hollow fiber has been simulated and analyzed. The results show that the x-polarization confinement loss and the core power ratio are 0.06dB/m and 98.2% at 1550nm, respectively. By contrast, the y-polarization confinement loss is up to 243.34dB/m while the core power ratio is 47.86%. The novel optical fiber exhibits good single polarization characteristics and transmission characteristics, and the bandwidth range of single mode single polarization is 55nm. The novel optical fiber is very good to satisfy the requirement of single mode single polarization at the 1550nm.

We present a novel single-polarization single-mode photonic crystal fiber (SPSM-PCF) design with four lines of small elliptical air-holes in order to obtain wider bandwidth for SPSM operation. The characteristics of the proposed SPSM-PCF are studied by using a full-vector finite element method (FEM) with perfect matched layer (PML) boundary conditions. At the wavelength of 1.55 µm, the confinement loss of the x-polarized mode is lower than 0.5 dB/km, whereas the loss of the y-polarized mode is larger than 50 dB/km. Compared with the case of x-polarized mode, the y-polarized mode can be suppressed in the PCF. Then, the SPSM operation is obtained. The proposed PCF can perform SPSM operation with broadband of 600 nm for considering the confinement loss ratio and the loss difference.
