Abstract Hollow-core negative curvature fibers (HC-NCFs) have become one of the research hotspots in the field of optical fiber because of its potential applications in the data and energy transmissions. In this paper, a new kind of single-polarization single-mode HC-NCF with nested U-type cladding elements is proposed. To achieve the single-polarization single-mode transmission, we use two different silica tube thicknesses that satisfy the resonance and anti-resonance conditions on the U-type cladding elements and the cladding tubes, respectively. Besides, the elliptical elements are introduced to achieve good single-mode performance. By studying the influences of the structure parameters on the propagation characteristics, the optimized structure parameters are obtained. The simulation results show that when the wavelength is located at 1550 nm, the single-polarization single-mode transmission is achieved, along with the polarization extinction ratio of 25749 and minimum high-order mode extinction ratio of 174. Furthermore, the confinement loss is only 0.0015 dB/m.

This study proposes a new simple procedure for extracting coastline from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images by utilizing a low-pass filter and edge detection algorithm. The low-pass filter is used to improve the histogram of the pixel value of the SAR image. It provides better distribution of pixel value and makes it easy to separate between sea and land surfaces. This study provides the processing steps using open-source software, i.e., SNAP SAR processor and QGIS application. This procedure has been tested using dual polarization Sentinel-1 (10x10 meters resolution) and single polarization ALOS-2 (3x3 meters resolution) dataset. The results show that using Sentinel-1 with dual polarization (VH) provides a better result than single polarization (VV). In the ALOS-2 case, only single polarization (HH) is available. However, even using only HH polarization, ALOS-2 provides a good result. In terms of resolution, ALOS-2 provides a better coastline than Sentinel-1 data due to ALOS-2 has better resolution. This procedure is expected to be helpful to detect coastline changes and for coastal area management.

Given the limited features (for example, the backscattering coefficient threshold range) of single-channel Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, it is difficult to distinguish ground objects similar to the backscattering coefficients of water bodies. In this paper, two representative research areas are selected (Yancheng Coastal wetland and Shijiu Lake), and the fully polarized SAR data based on Gaofen-3 are used to extract water bodies using the method of polarization decomposition and gray level co-occurrence matrix. Firstly, the multi-dimensional features of ground objects are extracted, and then the redundancy processing of multi-dimensional features is carried out by the separability index, which effectively solves the misclassification of non-water bodies and water bodies and improves the accuracy of water body extraction. The comparison between the results of full-polarization extraction and single-polarization extraction shows that both full-polarization and single-polarization extraction can extract water information, but the extraction accuracy of the full-polarization method can reach 94.74% in the area with complex wetland features, which can effectively compensate for the lack of precision of the single-polarization method. Although multi-dimensional features can be extracted from fully polarimetric SAR data, data redundancy may exist. Therefore, using the Separability index (SI) to process multi-dimensional features can effectively solve the problem of feature redundancy and improve classification accuracy.

A polarization filter based on simple structure photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coated with gold air holes is designed in this work. The full vector finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the characteristic parameters of PCF. In the final numerical simulation results, the loss peak in the [Formula: see text] polarization direction is 2305.72 dB/cm and the [Formula: see text]-polarized loss is as low as 75.86 dB/cm at 1.31 [Formula: see text]m. For the fiber length of 1000 [Formula: see text]m, the CT reaches 1936.83 dB and a wide bandwidth greater than 20 dB can provide above 800 nm. The content of this paper can provide a new idea for filter structure design.
