Slices of rat cerebral cortex were incubated in a buffered medium containing human sera. If sera from normal persons were used, there was only a very slight net increase in free fatty acid in the medium, but if sera from persons suffering from multiple sclerosis were used, there was a considerable increase in the free fatty acid concentration. This effect is probably not completely specific for multiple sclerosis.
