The term healthcare operating system is new and describes the function of an extended clinical information management system capable of exchanging data with other systems and operating through remote “cloud computing” facilities. This operating system must support an expanded patient-based record capable of incorporating a growing array of data sources and coordinating care activities among providers, patients, and families. In the future, the HOS will allow electronic health records from different vendors, patient portals, patient wearables, medical devices, data repositories, and other outside sources of data to connect seamlessly together in a secured cloud via advanced interoperability. Many of these standards are being set today.
