Theoretical studies in nuclear structure I. Enumeration and classification of the states arising from the filling of the nuclear d -shell

Using a simple method due to Racah, the orbital states arising from the filling of the nuclear d -shell in Russell-Saunders coupling are enumerated and, again following Racah, a new classification of the states introduced according to their transformation properties under the group of rotations in the five-dimensional space of the orbital states of a single d -particle. This new classification acquires significance from the short-range nature of nuclear forces and permits of predictions relating to the order of the levels with attractive forces of short range.

A new classification of opals through X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) methodology, by analysing 75 new samples of opal came from different worldwide areas, is introduced. A brief historical summary of the application of XRPD analysis on opals and the most important XRPD results reported in literature were compared with the newly obtained XRPD data. A simple method for the classification of opals on the basis of their degrees of structural order-disorder calculated from the diffraction data is proposed. In addition, a clear boundary, which has not been previously described by others in literature, related to the presence (or absence) of two-peak characteristic of the cristobalite phase is identified. This boundary allows for a discrimination of opals C from CT.

Following the methods of Racah and of Jahn, the orbital states arising from the nuclear configuration f n in Russell-Saunders coupling are classified by means of group theory. States are classified according to the irreducible representations of the permutation group, and of the rotation group in the seven-dimensional space spanned by the orbital states of a single f -particle. On the assumption of short-range attractive forces, this classification allows predictions regarding the ordering of levels in the f -shell; and, in particular, the lowest states of nuclei which contain only the simple f n configuration (apart from closed shells) may be predicted as a function of the isotopic number. Numerical values of the Slater integrals for the f -shell with a Gauss interaction are given as a function of the range of the interaction.

The article highlights certain aspects of the discussion on the topic of reductionism vs. holism in the philosophy of medicine. Classic radical reductionism is defeated by the concept of emergence. The s.c. bio-medical point of view on a malady, despite its relevance and clear benefit, is not recognized as universal as its adherents may claim, and it yields to an integral psycho-bio-social model. The author introduces a new classification of holism (vitalistic, social and individualistic) and makes appropriate recommendations to clinicians. It is social holism at the macro level that has proven effective in combating the spread of COVID-19.
