A novel endophytic actinomycete, designated strain GKU 164T, was isolated from the roots of a jambolan plum tree (Syzygium cumini L. Skeels), collected at Khao Khitchakut National Park, Chantaburi province, Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain formed a distinct clade within the genus Nonomuraea , and was most closely related to Nonomuraea monospora PT708T (98.77 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Nonomuraea thailandensis KC-061T (98.73 %). Strain GKU 164T formed a branched substrate and aerial hyphae that generated single spores with rough surfaces. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars were madurose, galactose, mannose, ribose, rhamnose and glucose. The N-acyl type of muramic acid was acetyl. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4) with minor amounts of MK-9(H6), MK-9(H2) and MK-9(H0). The phospholipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxy-phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositolmannosides, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, hydroxy-phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid and four unknown phospholipids. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and 10-methyl C17 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 70.4 mol%. Significant differences in the morphological, chemotaxonomical, and biochemical data together with DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain GKU 164T and type strains of closely related species, clearly demonstrated that strain GKU 164T represents a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea , for which the name Nonomuraea syzygii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GKU 164T ( = BCC 70457T = NBRC 110400T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic organism, isolated from the Red Sea sponge Spheciospongia vagabunda was investigated to determine its taxonomic position. On the basis of results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis strain EG49T was most closely related to Actinokineospora cibodasensis and Actinokineospora baliensis (both 97.3 % similarity) and Actinokineospora diospyrosa and Actinokineospora auranticolor (both 97.0 % similarity). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to all other species of the genus Actinokineospora was <97.0 %. The quinone system of strain EG49T contained the menaquinones MK-9(H4) (47 %), MK-9(H6) (27 %) and MK-9(H2) (15 %) in major amounts. Minor amounts of MK-7(H4) (2 %), MK-9(H0) (1 %), MK-9(H8) (3 %) and MK-10(H4) (3 %) were detected as well in addition to MK-8(H4), MK-8(H6), MK-10(H2) and MK-10(H6) (all <1 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. In the polar lipid profile, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine were predominant. Phosphatidylinositol-mannoside, two unidentified phospholipids and two glycoglipids as well as one aminoglycolipid, one aminolipid and one unidentified lipid were found in addition. The fatty acid profile was composed of mainly iso-branched fatty acids: iso-C16 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 1H. All these findings clearly supported the classification of the strain as representing a member of the genus Actinokineospora . In addition, the results of physiological and biochemical tests also allowed phenotypic differentiation of strain EG49T from the most closely related species of the genus Actinokineospora . Strain EG49T represents a novel species of the genus Actinokineospora , for which we propose the name Actinokineospora spheciospongiae sp. nov., with strain EG49T ( = DSM 45935T = CCM 8480T = LMG 27700T) as the type strain.

The taxonomic position of a novel actinomycete isolated from soil in Fars Province (Iran) was determined using a polyphasic approach. Phenotypic characterization and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of the isolate matched those described for members of the genus Streptomyces . On ISP2 medium, strain HM 1154T produced a dark cream, branched substrate mycelium and Retinaculiaperti aerial hyphae that in some images also appeared spiral and that developed into greyish-white spore chains with a smooth surface. The isolate showed optimal growth at 28 °C and pH 6–9 with 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as diagnostic diamino acid, ribose and glucose. The main phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, three unknown phospholipids and an unknown aminophospholipid; MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H2) were the predominant menaquinones. The major cellular fatty acids were the branched saturated iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. Strain HM 1154T exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Streptomyces coerulescens DSM 40146T (99.4 %), Streptomyces varsoviensis DSM 40346T (99.3 %), Streptomyces youssoufiensis DSM 41920T (99.2 %), Streptomyces abikoensis DSM 40831T (99.2 %), Streptomyces rimosus subsp. rimosus DSM 40260T (99.1 %), Streptomyces luteireticuli DSM 40509T (99.1 %), Streptomyces thioluteus DSM 40027T (99.1 %), Streptomyces blastmyceticus DSM 40029T (99.0 %) and Streptomyces hiroshimensis DSM 40037T (99.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization studies showed relatedness values of 11.0–35.8 % with the closest related species. Based on these results, strain HM 1154T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces zagrosensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HM 1154T ( = DSM 42018T = UTMC 1154T = CECT 8305T).

A novel Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile and mycolic acid-containing strain, CR3272T, isolated from soil, was studied using a polyphasic approach. The organism showed a combination of chemotaxonomic and morphological properties typical of the genus Nocardia . The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (type IV) and whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose, arabinose and xylose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4cyc). The major phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. Major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 cis9, C18 : 0 10-methyl (TBSA) and C16 : 1 cis9. The novel strain formed distinct phyletic line in the Nocardia 16S rRNA gene tree and was closely associated with Nocardia goodfellowii A2012T (98.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Nocardia alba YIM 30243T (98.5 %) and Nocardia caishijiensis F829T (97.9 %). However, DNA–DNA relatedness values and phenotypic data demonstrated that strain CR3272T was clearly distinguished from all closely related species of the genus Nocardia . It is concluded that the organism be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Nocardia , for which the name Nocardia sungurluensis is proposed. The type strain is CR3272T ( = DSM 45714T = KCTC 29094T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped and non-motile strain, designated PAMC 27367T, was isolated from rainwater collected on the Bering Sea. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain showed an affiliation with the genus Rhodococcus . Phylogenetic analyses revealed that strain PAMC 27367T formed a robust clade with the type strains of Rhodococcus rhodnii , Rhodococcus aetherivorans and Rhodococcus ruber with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 96.3 %, 95.8 % and 95.5 %, respectively. Cells of the strain grew optimally at 25 °C and at pH 6.5–7.0 in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) sea salts. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and three unknown phospholipids. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and 10-methyl C17 : 0. Cell wall analysis showed that strain PAMC 27367T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 77.1 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data presented here, we propose a novel species with the name Rhodococcus aerolatus sp. nov., with PAMC 27367T ( = KCTC 29240T = JCM 19485T) as the type strain.

Four novel strains (592T, S592, MF47T and SMF47) were isolated from Tibetan antelopes (Pantholops hodgsonii) and plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae), respectively. The cells were aerobic, non-motile, Gram-stain- and catalase-positive, rod-shaped bacteria. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the four strains showed highest similarities to Aeromicrobium fastidiosum DSM 10552T (98.1, 98.6, 98.7 and 98.7 %, respectively), and the phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and genomic sequences indicated that strains 592T and MF47T represent two novel species. The four isolates produced acid from l-rhamnose, d-xylose and cellobiose, but were unable to reduce nitrate. The DNA G+C contents of strains 592T and MF47T were 70.3 and 69.8 mol%, respectively. The digital DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains 592T and MF47T was 32.6 %, lower than the threshold of 70 %, indicating they belong to different species. The four strains’ genomes displayed less than 24.6 % DNA–DNA relatedness with all available genomes of the genus Aeromicrobium in the NCBI database, including Aeromicrobium fastidiosum NBRC 14897T and Aeromicrobium ginsengisoli JCM 14732T. The major fatty acids of the four strains were C18 : 1  ω9c and C18 : 0 10-methyl, and the main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant respiratory quinones were MK-9(H4) and MK-8(H4). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained ll-diaminopimelic acid. Based on these genotypic, phenotypic and biochemical analyses, it is proposed that the four unidentified bacteria be classified as two novel species, Aeromicrobium chenweiae sp. nov. and Aeromicrobium yanjiei sp. nov. The type strains are 592T (=CGMCC1.16526T=DSM 106289T) and MF47T (=CGMCC 1.17444T=JCM 33790T), respectively.

An anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming bacterium, designated strain PYR-10T, was isolated from a mesophilic methanogenic consortium. Cells were 0.7–1.2×6.0–6.3 µm, straight or slightly curved rods, with flagellar motility. Growth was observed in PYG (peptone-yeast glucose) medium at pH 5.5–8.0 (optimum, pH 6.5), 30–55 °C (45 °C) and in NaCl concentrations of 0–15 g l−1 (0 g l−1). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain PYR-10T belongs to the genus Clostridium . The strain showed 95.4, 93.7, 93.5 and 93.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Clostridium swellfunianum DSM 27788T, Clostridium pascui DSM 10365T, Clostridium pasteurianum DSM 525T and Clostridium punense DSM 28650T, respectively. The genomic DNA G+C content was 27.7 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids of strain PYR-10T were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C16 : 0 DMA, anteiso-C15 : 0 and C14 : 0. The main polar lipids were glycolipid, phosphoaminoglycolipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phospholipids, phosphatidylethanolamine and lipids. An unknown menaquinone was detected. 2,6-Diaminopimelic acid was not detected. The whole-cell sugars contained ribose and lower amounts of glucose. Based on the results of phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic analyses, strain PYR-10T represents a novel species of the genus Clostridium , for which the name Clostridium prolinivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain PYR-10T (=JCM 33161T=CCAM 531T=CGMCC 1.5286T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain HC44T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Hacibektaş, Turkey, and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The strain had morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomic properties identical to those of members of the genus Streptomyces . Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that HC44T clustered with members of the genus Streptomyces and the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values were obtained with Streptomyces vastus NBRC 13094T (97.6 %) and Streptomyces kalpinensis TRM 46509T (96.9 %). Multi-locus sequence analysis (MLSA) based on five housekeeping genes (atpD, gyrB, recA, rpoB and trpB) showed that the MLSA evolutionary distance value was 0.043 between strain HC44T and S. vastus NBRC 13094T. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained ll-diaminopimelic acid, glucose, mannose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8). The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. The DNA G+C content of the draft genome sequence, consisting of 11.2 Mbp, was 69.8 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic evidence, strain HC44T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces scabichelini sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HC44T (=DSM 106874T=KCTC 39872T).

An aerobic, rod-shaped, Gram-stain-positive, actinobacterial strain, designated 1.0914T, was isolated from a stalactite sample collected from a cave located in Guizhou Province, southwest PR China. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain 1.0914T shared highest similarities values with Nocardioides pelophilus CGMCC 4.7388T (97.7 %), Nocardioides immobilis CCTCC AB 2017083T (97.5 %) and Nocardioides silvaticus CCTCC AB 2018079T (97.3 %) and values lower than 97.0 % to other members of the genus Nocardioides . Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain 1.0914T formed an isolated branch with N. pelophilus CGMCC 4.7388T, N. immobilis CCTCC AB 2017083T and N. silvaticus CCTCC AB 2018079T. The polar lipids contained phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and one unidentified phospholipid in the cellular membrane. The major fatty acids were identified as iso-C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c, C17 : 1 ω8c and C16 : 0. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-8(H4) and ll-diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The genomic DNA G+C content was 71.1 mol%. The orthologous average nucleotide identiy values between N. pelophilus CGMCC 4.7388T, N. immobilis CCTCC AB 2017083T, N. silvaticus CCTCC 2018079T and strain 1.0914T were 82.3, 81.7 and 81.9 % respectively. DNA–DNA hybridization values between N. pelophilus CGMCC 4.7388T, N. immobilis CCTCC AB 2017083T, N. silvaticus CCTCC 2018079T and strain 1.0914T were 25.2, 24.6 and 24.5 % respectively. The phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data supported the classification of strain 1.0914T as representing a new species of Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides stalactiti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 1.0914T (=CCTCC AB 2018266T=KCTC 49243T).

An actinomycete strain, designated Sco-B23T, was isolated from a brown-coloured layer of scoria collected near Darangshi Oreum (a small mountain) in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Cells of the organism were Gram-positive, non-endospore-forming, non-motile cocci and grew at 20–35 °C, at pH 5.1–11.1 and with 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl. Colonies were circular, translucent and moderate yellow in colour with entire margins. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the isolate belonged to the genus Phycicoccus and formed a monophyletic line between a Phycicoccus bigeumensis – Phycicoccus dokdonensis cluster and a Phycicoccus aerophilus – Phycicoccus ginsenosidimutans cluster. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain Sco-B23T and the type strains of Phycicoccus species were: P. bigeumensis (98.8 %), P. dokdonensis (98.7 %), P. aerophilus (97.7 %), P. ginsenosidimutans (97.7 %), P. cremeus (96.9 %) and P. jejuensis (96.5 %). Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that the isolate possessed meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid of the peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone, a polar lipid profile including diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown phospholipid and two unknown lipids, predominant fatty acids represented by iso-C15 : 0, C17 : 1 cis9, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0, and DNA G+C content of 69.7 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain Sco-B23T and the close relatives within the genus Phycicoccus was below 18.1 %. On the basis of phenotypic features and DNA–DNA hybridization data, strain Sco-B23T represents a novel species of the genus Phycicoccus , for which the name Phycicoccus badiiscoriae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Sco-B23T ( = KCTC 19807T  = KACC 15111T  = NBRC 107918T).

A halophilic, Gram-staining-positive, non-motile, endospore forming rod-shaped bacterial strain, S1LM8T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from an inland solar saltern located in La Malahá, Granada (Spain). Growth was observed in media containing 7.5–30 % total salts (optimum 15 % total salts), at pH 7–10 (optimum pH 8) and at 15–50 °C (optimum 35–38 °C). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. It contained A1γ-type peptidoglycan with meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The G+C content of its genomic DNA was 38.2 mol%. The affiliation of strain S1LM8T with the species of the genus Alkalibacillus was determined by 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison. The most closely related species were Alkalibacillus halophilus YIM 012T with 99.8 % similarity, Alkalibacillus salilacus BH163T with 99.8 % similarity and Alkalibacillus flavidus ISL-17T with 98.1 % similarity between their 16S rRNA gene sequences. However, DNA–DNA relatedness between the novel isolate and the related species of the genus Alkalibacillus was less than 34 %. Based on the phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, a novel species, Alkalibacillus almallahensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S1LM8T ( = CECT 8373T = DSM 27545T).
