A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, Ca-34T, was isolated from nodules of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) in Pakistan and studied for its taxonomic affiliation. The almost full-length 16S rRNA gene sequence showed highest similarities to those of strains of the genus Ochrobactrum. Based on results of MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (98.6 %), strain Ca-34T and Ochrobactrum intermedium LMG 3301T are phylogenetic neighbours; the two strains shared DNA–DNA relatedness of 64 %. The fatty acid profile [predominantly C18 : 1 ω7c (67.7 %) and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (19.6 %)] also supported the genus affiliation. Metabolically, strain Ca-34T differed from other type strains of Ochrobactrum in many reactions and from all type strains in testing positive for gelatin hydrolysis and in testing negative for assimilation of alaninamide and l-threonine. Based on phenotypic and genotypic data, we conclude that strain Ca-34T represents a novel species, for which we propose the name Ochrobactrum ciceri sp. nov. (type strain Ca-34T =DSM 22292T =CCUG 57879T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, DPG-3T, was isolated from seawater from the South Sea in Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain DPG-3T grew optimally at 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. In a neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain DPG-3T fell within a clade comprising Algoriphagus species and appeared most closely related to Algoriphagus halophilus JC 2051T (96.1 %16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Algoriphagus lutimaris S1-3T (96.4 %). The type strains of other Algoriphagus species showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 92.9–96.0 % with strain DPG-3T. The predominant menaquinone of strain DPG-3T was MK-7. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c (summed feature 3). The major polar lipids detected in strain DPG-3T were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified lipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 44.8 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain DPG-3T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Algoriphagus, for which the name Algoriphagus namhaensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DPG-3T ( = KCTC 23419T = CCUG 60523T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, IG8T, was isolated from seawater off the Sanriku coast, Japan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain IG8T represented a separate lineage within the genus Loktanella; the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values were found with the type strains of Loktanella salsilacus (98.6 %) and Loktanella fryxellensis (98.4 %). DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain IG8T and the type strains of L. salsilacus (27.9–36.1 %) and L. fryxellensis (11.3–31.0 %) were clearly below 70 %, the generally accepted limit for species delineation. The DNA G+C content of strain IG8T was 66.3 mol%. On the basis of DNA–DNA hybridization, some biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison, it is proposed that the isolate represents a novel species, Loktanella atrilutea sp. nov. The type strain is IG8T (=IAM 15450T=NCIMB 14280T).

A moderately halophilic, aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium was isolated from a tidal flat area of Dae-Chun, Chung-Nam, Korea. The strain, designated mano11T, comprised rod-shaped cells that were motile by means of polar flagella. It grew with 3–12 % NaCl and at 4–37 °C and pH 5.3–9.3. The predominant menaquinone present in this strain was MK-7 and diaminopimelic acid was not found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain mano11T belongs to the genus Marinobacterium. Strain mano11T exhibited 92.8–98.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity when compared with the type strains of three other species of the genus Marinobacterium. DNA–DNA hybridization between strain mano11T and Marinobacterium georgiense DSM 11526T, its closest relative in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, was 13 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain mano11T represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacterium, for which the name Marinobacterium halophilum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is mano11T (=KCTC 12240T=DSM 17586T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and short rod- or rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated 22-5T, was isolated from a bluespotted cornetfish, Fistularia commersonii, and subjected to taxonomic study. Strain 22-5T grew optimally at 30 °C and in the presence of 2–5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 22-5T belonged to the genus Paracoccus and joined the cluster comprising Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11T and Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588T, with which strain 22-5T exhibited 97.4 and 96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. Strain 22-5T exhibited 94.0–96.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the other type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus. Strain 22-5T contained Q-10 as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c as the predominant fatty acid. In this study, P. zeaxanthinifaciens KCTC 22688T also contained Q-10 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content of strain 22-5T was 63.6 mol%. Strain 22-5T exhibited 44 and 32 % DNA–DNA relatedness to P. homiensis KACC 11518T and P. zeaxanthinifaciens KCTC 22688T, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain 22-5T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus fistulariae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 22-5T (=KCTC 22803T =CCUG 58401T).

Two Gram-negative, non-motile, pleomorphic bacterial strains, DS-40T and DS-45T, were isolated from a soil sample collected from Dokdo, Korea, and their exact taxonomic positions were investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 6.5–7.5 in the presence of 0–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. They contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and possessed iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of strains DS-40T and DS-45T were 36.0 and 36.8 mol%, respectively. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T shared a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.7 % and demonstrated a mean DNA–DNA relatedness level of 12 %. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strains DS-40T and DS-45T were most closely phylogenetically affiliated with the genus Pedobacter of the family Sphingobacteriaceae. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 91.4–93.7 and 89.9–91.6 % with respect to the type strains of Pedobacter and Sphingobacterium species, respectively. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties, together with the phylogenetic data, support the assignment of strains DS-40T and DS-45T as two distinct species within the genus Pedobacter. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strains DS-40T and DS-45T represent two novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the names Pedobacter lentus sp. nov. and Pedobacter terricola sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. The respective type strains are DS-40T (=KCTC 12875T=JCM 14593T) and DS-45T (=KCTC 12876T=JCM 14594T).

Three xylanase-producing alkaliphilic strains, SU1T, 36AC4 and 36AC6, were isolated from the guts of larvae of the Japanese horned beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus septentrionalis). The isolates stained Gram-positive and were aerobic, spore-forming, non-motile and rod-shaped and grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 9. They contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone and iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of the strains were 37.4–37.7 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, these strains were shown to belong to the genus Bacillus. Although their 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of the alkaliphilic species Bacillus pseudalcaliphilus and B. alcalophilus was 97 %, the novel isolates formed a distinct group in the phylogenetic trees and DNA–DNA relatedness values to the type strains of these species were less than 30 %. Results of physiological and biochemical tests, including salt preference, enabled these strains to be differentiated phenotypically from described Bacillus species. Therefore, strains SU1T, 36AC4 and 36AC6 represent a novel species for which the name Bacillus trypoxylicola sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is SU1T (=NBRC 102646T =KCTC 13244T).

A Gram-staining-negative, motile, agarolytic bacterium, designated M-M1T, was isolated from marine sand obtained from Geoje Island, South Sea, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Strain M-M1T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. It did not grow in the presence of >7 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain M-M1T fell within the clade comprising members of the genus Thalassomonas, clustering with Thalassomonas agarivorans TMA1T, Thalassomonas loyana CBMAI 722T and Thalassomonas ganghwensis JC2041T, with which it exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 96.4, 96.0 and 94.9 % respectively. Strain M-M1T exhibited 94.7–95.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the other species of the genus Thalassomonas. Strain M-M1T contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 44.2 mol%. Strain M-M1T could be differentiated from phylogenetically related species of the genus Thalassomonas by differences in some phenotypic properties. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain M-M1T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Thalassomonas, for which the name Thalassomonas agariperforans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M-M1T ( = KCTC 23343T  = CCUG 60020T).

An orange-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, filament-forming, rod-shaped bacterium (BUZ 3T) was isolated from a coastal mud sample from the North Sea (Fedderwardersiel, Germany) and characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence data, it belonged to the family Cytophagaceae, exhibiting low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<90 %) with members of the genera Spirosoma, Rudanella and Fibrella. The DNA G+C content was 52.0 mol%. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 1ω5c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and several aminolipids. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, it is proposed that strain BUZ 3T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Fibrisoma limi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BUZ 3T ( = DSM 22564T  = CCUG 58137T).

An aerobic, yellow-pigmented, facultatively methylotrophic, Gram-staining-negative, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain Gm-149T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of cultivated soybean in India. Cells were motile by gliding. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0 3-OH and anteiso-C15 : 0, and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain Gm-149T was 35.6 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain Gm-149T formed a distinct phyletic line within the genus Flavobacterium. Based on levels of pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain Gm-149T was related most closely to the type strain of Flavobacterium daejeonense (97.1 %), but the level of DNA–DNA relatedness between these two strains was about 11.2 %. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, strain Gm-149T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium glycines sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gm-149T (=ICMP 17618T=NBRC 105008T).

Strain TSBY 67T was isolated during a study on the phylogenetic diversity of culturable bacteria from alpine permafrost in Tianshan Mountains, China. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain TSBY 67T was closely related to members of the genus Chryseobacterium and exhibited 96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Chryseobacterium aquaticum 10-46T and Chryseobacterium soldanellicola PSD 1-4T. Strain TSBY 67T grew aerobically, at 4–37 °C, with 0–2 % NaCl and at pH 6–8. Cells were Gram-staining negative, non-motile and non-spore-forming rods. The dominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (26.9 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (16.1 %) and iso-C17 : 1ω9c (15.4 %). The G+C content of the DNA was 33.5 mol%. Strain TSBY 67T was distinguishable from its closest phylogenetic neighbours by a combination of phenotypic characteristics. Therefore, strain TSBY 67T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium, for which the name Chryseobacterium xinjiangense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TSBY 67T ( = NRRL B-51308T = CCTCC AB 207183T).
