A Gram-negative, obligately anaerobic, non-spore-forming, long rod-shaped bacterium strain P2T was isolated from the offshore mangrove sediment of the South China Sea. Growth was observed at between 22 and 39 °C, with an optimum at 35 °C. The pH range for growth was 5.0–8.5, with an optimum around pH 7.0–7.5. Salt tolerance was determined between 0.2 and 3.5 % (w/v), optimum at 0.5–1.0 %. Catalase and oxidase activities were negative. Strain P2T utilized cysteine, lactate, pyruvate, yeast extract or H2/CO2+acetate as electron donors, and sulfate or sulfite as electron acceptors. Metabolism was strictly fermentative. The main organic fermentation products were propionate, acetate and succinate. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain P2T formed a distinct evolutionary lineage within the family Marinilabiliaceae . Strain P2T was most closely related to members of the genera Alkaliflexus (92.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Marinilabilia (91.7 %) and Anaerophaga (89.9 %) of the family Marinilabiliaceae . The DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 44.2±1.0 mol%. The dominant fatty acids of strain P2T were iso-C15 : 0 (33.5 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (18.9 %), C16 : 0 (5.4 %), C16 : 0 3-OH (7.7 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (13.3 %). The respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (100 % of total quinone) and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. Strain P2T was distinguishable from members of phylogenetically related genera by differences in several phenotypic properties. On the basis of phylogenetic, phenotypic and physiological evidence, a novel genus, Mangroviflexus, is proposed to harbour strain P2T ( = CGMCC 1.5167T = DSM 24214T) which is described as the type strain of a novel species, Mangroviflexus xiamenensis gen. nov., sp. nov.

A taxonomic study was carried out on strain P1T, which was isolated from mangrove sediment samples collected from Qinglan Port (Hainan, China). Cells were curved rods, that were motile, with a single polar flagellum. The strain was non-spore-forming with a cell size of 0.6×1.5–2.2 µm. Catalase and oxidase activities were not detected. Growth was observed in the temperature range 22–44 °C (optimum, 35–40 °C) and pH range 5.5–8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0). NaCl was required for growth and tolerated at up to 3.5 % (w/v) (optimum, 0.5 %). Strain P1T utilized hydrogen, succinate, l-malate, citrate, oxalate, dl-lactate, pyruvate, or cysteine as electron donors, and sulfate or sulfite as electron acceptors. Fermentation products from pyruvate were acetate, H2 and CO2. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain P1T formed a distinct evolutionary lineage within the family Desulfovibrionaceae . Strain P1T was most closely related to members of the genera Desulfovibrio (92.0–94.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Desulfocurvus (91.1 %), Bilophila (87.9 %) and Lawsonia (86.0 %) of the family Desulfovibrionaceae . The DNA G+C content of strain P1T was 64.5 mol% and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (18.8 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (5.0 %), C16 : 0 (14.2 %) and iso-C17 : 1ω9c (24.4 %). The predominant menaquinone was MK-7 (97 %). Major polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Strain P1T was distinguishable from members of phylogenetically related genera by differences in several phenotypic properties. On the basis of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain P1T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Desulfobaculum xiamenensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Desulfobaculum xiamenensis is P1T ( = CGMCC 1.5166T = DSM 24233T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding and pleomorphic bacterial strain, designated DPG-25T, was isolated from seawater in a seaweed farm in the South Sea in Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DPG-25T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPG-25T formed a cluster with the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and Lutimonas vermicola . Strain DPG-25T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.3, 93.1 and 93.6 % to the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola , respectively. Strain DPG-25T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected in strain DPG-25T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and the phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DPG-25T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola . On the basis of the data presented here, strain DPG-25T represents a novel species in a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Namhaeicola litoreus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Namhaeicola litoreus is DPG-25T ( = KCTC 23702T  = CCUG 61485T).

Strains RU-16T, RU-28, RU-04T and PU-02T were isolated from the gut of the African mole cricket, Gryllotalpa africana. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strains belonged to the family Microbacteriaceae . All four strains were most closely related to Curtobacterium ginsengisoli DCY26T (below 97 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). These isolates were Gram-stain-positive, motile (by gliding), rod-shaped and exhibited ivory-coloured colonies. Their chemotaxonomic properties included MK-11 as the major respiratory quinone, ornithine as the cell-wall diamino acid, acetyl as the acyl type of the peptidoglycan, cyclohexyl-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acid and phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, we propose a new genus in the family Microbacteriaceae , Gryllotalpicola gen. nov., with three novel species, Gryllotalpicola daejeonensis sp. nov. (type strain RU-04T  = KCTC 13809T  = JCM 17590T), Gryllotalpicola koreensis sp. nov. (type strain RU-16T  = KCTC 13810T  = JCM 17591T) and Gryllotalpicola kribbensis sp. nov. (type strain PU-02T  = KCTC 13808T  = JCM 17593T). Gryllotalpicola koreensis is the type species of the genus. Additionally, we propose that Curtobacterium ginsengisoli should be reclassified in the genus as Gryllotalpicola ginsengisoli comb. nov. (type strain DCY26T  = KCTC 13163T  = JCM 14773T).

Two Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated as HMF7605T and HMF7616T, were isolated from birch tree, in Yong-in, Republic of Korea. Strains HMF7605T and HMF7616T exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 95.9 and 97.5 % to Adhaeribacter swui 17mud1-7T, 97.9 % between themselves. The values of average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA–DNA hybridization between strains HMF7605T and HMF7616T were 77.6 and 22.0 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of the two strains revealed that they belonged to the genus Adhaeribacter within the family Hymenobacteraceae . The predominant fatty acids of both strains were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c), C16 : 1  ω5c and summed feature 4 (comprising iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B). The both strains contained menaquinone-7 as the only isoprenoid quinone. The major polar lipid profiles of the two strains were similar with phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid, one unidentified glycolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C contents of strains HMF7605T and HMF7616T were 42.0 and 42.8 mol%, respectively. Based on the results of the phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic investigation, two novel species, Adhaeribacter arboris sp. nov. and Adhaeribacter pallidiroseus sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are HMF7605T (=KCTC 62465T=NBRC 113228T) and HMF7616T (=KCTC 62466T=NBRC 113229T), respectively.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, yellow, non-motile, rod-shaped and alginate-degrading bacterium, designated Dm15T, was isolated from marine alga collected in Weihai, PR China. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Dm15T represents a distinct line of the family Flavobacteriaceae . Strain Dm15T had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to its closest phylogenetic neighbour Arcticiflavibacter luteus (96.7 %) and 93.7–96.4 % sequence similarity to other phylogenetic neighbours ( Bizionia paragorgiae , Winogradskyella thalassocola , Ichthyenterobacterium magnum , Psychroserpens burtonensis and Arcticiflavibacter luteus ) in the family Flavobacteriaceae . The novel isolate was able to grow at 10–40 °C (optimum, 30–33 °C), pH 7.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–7.5) and with 0.5–6.0 % NaCl (optimum 2.0–3.0 %, w/v). It could grow at 40 °C, and degrade alginate and cellulose, which were different from the neighbour genera. The draft genome consisted of 3395 genes with a total length of 3 798 431 bp and 34.1mol% G+C content. Especially, there were some specific genes coding for cellulase and alginate lyase, which provided a basis for the above phenotypic characteristics. The strain's genome sequence showed 71.1–80.2 % average amino acid identity values and 71.8–77.7 % average nucleotide identity values compared to the type strains of related genera within the family Flavobacteriaceae . It shared digital DNA–DNA hybridization identity of 19.8 and 20.9 % with I. magnum and A. luteus , respectively. The sole menaquinone was MK-6. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipids included six unidentified polar lipids, four unidentified aminolipids and phosphatidylethanolamine. Based on the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, strain Dm15T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , phylum Bacteroidetes , for which the name Flavihalobacter algicola gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Dm15T (KCTC 42256T=CICC 23815T).

A Gram-negative, short-rod-shaped, orange-pigmented bacterium, strain LYYY01T, was isolated from a mangrove sediment sample collected from Yunxiao mangrove National Nature Reserve, Fujian Province, China. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that strain LYYY01T is a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae , forming a distinct lineage with species of the genera Meridianimaribacter , Sediminibacter , Gelidibacter and Subsaximicrobium . The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain LYYY01T and the type strains of related species ranged from 93.9 to 90.9 %. Growth was observed at temperatures from 10 to 38 °C, at salinities from 1 to 7 % and at pH from 6 to 10. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 38.6 mol% and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 (27.6 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.0 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.0 %) and iso-C16 : 0 3-OH (6.2 %). According to its morphology, physiology, fatty acid composition and 16S rRNA gene sequence data, strain LYYY01T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Mangrovimonas yunxiaonensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Mangrovimonas yunxiaonensis is LYYY01T ( = CGMCC 1.12280T = LMG 27142T).

A Gram-positive, obligately anaerobic, motile, slender, flexible rod, designated SC/BZ-SP2T, was isolated from mixed alkaline water and sediment of Soap Lake, Washington State, USA. Strain SC/BZ-SP2T formed salmon to pink colonies and was alkaliphilic. The isolate grew at pH35 °C 7.5–10.5 (optimum pH35 °C 9.7), at 8–40 °C (optimum 35–37 °C) and with 0.35–1.38 M Na+ (optimum 0.44–0.69 M Na+). The isolate utilized l-arabinose, d-ribose, d-xylose, d-fructose, d-mannose, d-galactose, cellobiose, maltose, sucrose, trehalose, sorbitol, xylan, malate and yeast extract as carbon and energy sources; best growth was observed with l-arabinose, cellobiose, maltose and trehalose. The major fermentation products from beechwood xylan were propionate and acetate. The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, C17 : 0 3-OH and C15 : 0 3-OH. The cell-wall sugars were ribose, xylose, galactose and glucose. Thiosulfate and sulfite could be reduced to sulfide. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.5±0.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SC/BZ-SP2T belonged to the family Marinilabiliaceae of the order Bacteroidales , class Bacteroidia . The most closely related strains were Alkaliflexus imshenetskii Z-7010T (91.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Marinilabilia salmonicolor Cy s1T (91.0 %) and Anaerophaga thermohalophila Fru22T (90.4 %). On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, strain SC/BZ-SP2T represents a novel species in a new genus of the family Marinilabiliaceae , for which the name Alkalitalea saponilacus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Alkalitalea saponilacus is SC/BZ-SP2T ( = ATCC BAA-2172T  = DSM 24412T).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, non-gliding, oxidase- and catalase-positive, yellow-pigmented rod, designated A11T, was isolated from a marine sponge, Halichondria oshoro, collected on the coastline of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain A11T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were members of the genera Muricauda , Flagellimonas and Croceitalea (94.4–94.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The only polar lipid detected in strain A11T was phosphatidylethanolamine. The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (30.4 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (26.7 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.4 %) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (7.3 %). The DNA G+C content of strain A11T was 41.7 mol% and its major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of combined data from phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain A11T represents a novel genus and species within the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Spongiibacterium flavum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is A11T ( = KCTC 22665T = DSM 22638T). Emended descriptions of the genera Croceitalea and Flagellimonas are also given.

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated CWB-1T, was isolated from a haloalkaline lake sediment sample collected from the bottom of Chaiwopu Lake, Urumchi, Xinjiang Province, PR China. Strain CWB-1T grew at 4–40 °C (optimum, 30–35 °C), pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.0) and with 0.5–5.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.5–3.0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and the whole genome sequence both revealed that strain CWB-1T belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae . The strain had the highest similarity of the 16S rRNA gene sequence to Psychroserpens jangbogonensis PAMC 27130T (92.8 %). The genome of strain CWB-1T was 3 548 011 bp long with 36.3 % DNA G+C content. The predominant fatty acids (>10 %) in the CWB-1T cells were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 1 (iso-C15 : 1 H/C13 : 0 3-OH). The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified lipids. Based on the phylogenetic analyses, as well as the phenotypic characteristics, a novel genus and species of the family Flavobacteriaceae , Paucihalobacter ruber gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is CWB-1T (=KCTC 72450T=CGMCC 1.17149T).

A bacterial strain, designated Npb-03T, was isolated from a freshwater river in Taiwan and was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The cells were Gram-reaction-negative, straight rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming and facultatively anaerobic. Growth occurred at 10–37 °C (optimum, 30–35 °C), at pH 6.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0) and with 0–1.0 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The predominant fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the DNA G+C content was 64.1 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an uncharacterized aminolipid and three uncharacterized phospholipids. The major polyamines were putrescine, 2-hydroxyputrescine, cadaverine and spermidine. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Npb-03T forms a distinct lineage with respect to closely related genera within the family Neisseriaceae of the class Betaproteobacteria , most closely related to the genera Aquaspirillum , Laribacter , Leeia and Microvirgula , and the levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with respect to the type species of related genera are less than 93 %. On the basis of the genotypic and phenotypic data, strain Npb-03T represents a novel genus and species of the family Neisseriaceae , for which the name Rivicola pingtungensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Npb-03T ( = BCRC 80376T = LMG 26668T = KCTC 23712T).
