Two strains of Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, spore-forming and rod-shaped bacteria, designated U13T and U14, were isolated from soil of the Ukraine. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these strains belong to the genus Tumebacillus, with the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Tumebacillus ginsengisoli Gsoil 1105T (95.48 % and 95.49 %, respectively). Strains U13T and U14 had iso-C15 : 0 and summed features 1 and 4 as the main fatty acids, and were able to grow at pH ranging from pH 5.0 to 9.0 (optimum pH 6.0–7.0), temperatures ranging from 25 to 42 °C (optimum 28–37 °C) and with 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %, w/v) on R2A agar medium. Chemotaxonomic data revealed that the cell-wall peptidoglycan type of the two strains was type A1γ (meso-diaminopimelic acid). On the basis of the evidence from this study, strains U13T and U14 represent a novel species of the genus Tumebacillus, for which the name Tumebacillus luteolus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is U13T ( = KEMB 7305-100T = JCM 19866T) and a second strain is U14 ( = KEMB 7305-101 = JCM 19867).

Strain B538T is a Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, which was isolated from Xinjiang province in China. This organism grew optimally at 30–35 °C and pH 8.0–8.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B538T belonged to the genus Paenibacillus and chemotaxonomic data (DNA G+C content, 47.0 mol%; major isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; cell wall type, A1γ meso-diaminopimelic acid; major fatty acids, anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0) supported affiliation of the isolate with the genus Paenibacillus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that the isolate was most closely related to Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.1 %; sequence similarities to other members of the genus Paenibacillus used in the phylogenetic tree were less than 96.5 %. The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain B538T and P. glycanilyticus DS-1T was about 8.0 %. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, strain B538T (=KCTC 3952T=DSM 16970T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus xinjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-positive, aerobic, actinobacterial strain with rod-shaped spores, designated YIM 63158T, was isolated from the surface-sterilized roots of Artemisia annua L. collected from Yunnan province, south-west China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 63158T belonged to the genus Pseudonocardia. The closest neighbours were ‘Pseudonocardia sichuanensis’ KLBMP 1115 (99.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Pseudonocardia adelaidensis EUM 221T (99.1 %) and Pseudonocardia zijingensis DSM 44774T (98.8 %); sequence similarities to other members of the genus Pseudonocardia ranged from 98.6 to 94.4 %. The chemotaxonomic characteristics, such as the cell-wall diaminopimelic acid, whole-cell sugars, fatty acid components and major menaquinones, suggested that the isolate belonged to the genus Pseudonocardia. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 73.3 mol%. On the basis of physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data, including low DNA–DNA relatedness between the isolate and other members of the genus Pseudonocardia, it is proposed that strain YIM 63158T represents a novel species in this genus, with the name Pseudonocardia kunmingensis sp. nov. The type strain is YIM 63158T ( = DSM 45301T  = CCTCC AA 208081T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-sporulating bacterial strain, designated LYX05T, was isolated from coastal sediment of Qingdao, China, on the coast of the Yellow Sea. Strain LYX05T was aerobic and heterotrophic. The strain grew optimally at 37 °C and pH 7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Colonies were 1–2 mm in diameter, circular, reddish orange and shiny with entire edges on marine agar medium. Cells were rods (0.3–0.5 µm wide and 0.8–1.6 µm long). The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (40.82 %) and C16 : 0 (10.45 %). The DNA G+C content was 42.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LYX05T was phylogenetically related to the members of the genus Algoriphagus and the closest relative was Algoriphagus hitonicola 7-UAHT (95.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain LYX05T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Algoriphagus, for which the name Algoriphagus faecimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LYX05T ( = JCM 16561T  = DSM 23095T  = LMG 25474T).

A halotolerant, Gram-negative, rod-shaped and light-red-pigmented bacterium, designated LP51T, was isolated from pond sediment near a hexachlorocyclohexane dumpsite located at Chinhat, Lucknow, India. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain LP51T formed a distinct phyletic clade along with the members of the genus Pontibacter. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to members of the genus Pontibacter ranged from 94.2 to 99.4  %. The cells were motile, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15  :  0 (17.8  %), iso-C15  :  0 3-OH (8.8  %), iso-C17  :  0 3-OH (5.7  %), summed feature 3 (C16  :  1ω7c and/or C16  :  1ω6c; 6.5  %) and summed feature 4 (iso-C17  :  1 I and/or anteiso-C17  :  1 B; 30.7  %). The polar lipid profile of strain LP51T showed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, unknown aminolipids, unknown polar lipids and unknown glycolipids. DNA–DNA relatedness of strain LP51T with respect to the most closely related type strain, Pontibacter korlensis X14-1T, was 47.2  %. On the basis of this information, it is proposed that the isolate be assigned to a novel species of the genus Pontibacter, for which the name Pontibacter chinhatensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LP51T ( = CCM 8436T = MCC 2070T).

Two novel thermophilic bacteria, designated SgZ-9T and SgZ-10T, were isolated from compost. Cells of the two strains were catalase-positive, endospore-forming and Gram-staining-positive rods. Strain SgZ-9T was oxidase-positive and non-motile, and strain SgZ-10T was oxidase-negative and motile. The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity for both strains SgZ-9T and SgZ-10T was observed with Bacillus fortis (97.5 % and 96.9 %, respectively). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SgZ-9T formed a cluster with B. fortis R-6514T and Bacillus fordii R-7190T, and SgZ-10T formed a cluster with Bacillus farraginis R-6540T. The DNA–DNA pairing studies showed that SgZ-9T displayed 41.6 % and 30.7 % relatedness to the type strains of B. fortis and B. fordii , respectively. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strains SgZ-9T and SgZ-10T was 97.2 %, and the level of DNA–DNA relatedness between them was 39.2 %. The DNA G+C content of SgZ-9T and SgZ-10T was 45.3 and 47.9 mol%, respectively. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealed that both strains contained the menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the predominant respiratory quinone. The major cellular fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 in SgZ-9T and iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 in SgZ-10T. Based on the phenotypic characteristics, chemotaxonomic features, DNA–DNA hybridization with the nearest phylogenetic neighbours and phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences, the two strains were determined to be two distinct novel species in the genus Bacillus , and the names proposed are Bacillus composti sp. nov. SgZ-9T ( = CCTCC AB2012109T = KACC 16872T) and Bacillus thermophilus sp. nov. SgZ-10T (CCTCC AB2012110T = KACC 16873T).

A Gram-positive, rod- or coccoid-shaped bacterial strain, DS-17T, was isolated from a soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-17T grew optimally at around pH 8.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 0.5–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-17T belonged to the genus Nocardioides. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain DS-17T were consistent with those of the genus Nocardioides: the cell-wall peptidoglycan type was based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone and iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c and C17 : 0 were the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 71.5 mol%. Strain DS-17T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 94.5–96.9 % to the type strains of recognized Nocardioides species. Strain DS-17T could be distinguished from recognized Nocardioides species by differences in phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain DS-17T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-17T (=KCTC 19217T=JCM 14582T).

A Gram-negative bacterium, designated B2-9T, was isolated from water of a slightly alkaline lake, Longhu Lake in Daqing, north-east China. Strain B2-9T was an aerobic rod, heterotrophic, catalase- and oxidase-positive and motile by means of a single polar flflagellum. The isolate grew well on n-alkanes C9–C17 and weakly on C6–C8, C18 and C19. Growth occurred at 10–37 °C (optimum 20–25 °C), at pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum pH 7.0) and with ≤1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c (41.4 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c; 18.5 %) and C16 : 0 (10.9 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain B2-9T belonged to the genus Hydrocarboniphaga of the class Gammaproteobacteria and shared 97.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Hydrocarboniphaga effusa AP103T. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain B2-9T and H. effusa DSM 16095T was 24 %. The DNA G+C content of strain B2-9T was 66 mol%. Strain B2-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hydrocarboniphaga, for which the name Hydrocarboniphaga daqingensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B2-9T (=CGMCC 1.7049T =NBRC 104238T).

A Gram-negative bacterium, designated AD8T, was isolated from a tidal flat of the Taean coast in South Korea. Cells were strictly aerobic, motile, ovoid rods or rods, with two lateral flagella on one side. Strain AD8T was catalase- and oxidase-positive and able to oxidize thiosulfate and reduce nitrate to nitrite. Growth of strain AD8T was observed at 15–40 °C (optimum 25–30 °C), at pH 5.0–9.5 (optimum pH 6.0–7.5) and with 1.0–11.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2.0–4.0 %). The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67.5 mol% and the major quinone was Q-10. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain AD8T belonged to the genus Citreicella and was most closely related to Citreicella marina CK-I3-6T within the class Alphaproteobacteria (96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analysis, strain AD8T represents a novel species within the genus Citreicella, for which the name Citreicella aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AD8T ( = KACC 13699T  = DSM 22011T).

A moderately halophilic and alkalitolerant bacterium, designated strain HN30T, was isolated from garden soil in Japan. Cells of strain HN30T were motile, endospore-forming, aerobic, rod-shaped and Gram-positive, and contained A1γ meso-diaminopimelic acid-type murein. Growth occurred in 7–23 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 10–15 %, w/v), at pH 6.5–10.0 (optimum, pH 8.0–8.5) and at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C). The isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain HN30T was 47 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HN30T was most closely related to Geomicrobium halophilum BH1T (93 % sequence similarity). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with other recognized species were less than 89 %. Phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics indicated that strain HN30T represents a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Natribacillus halophilus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is HN30T ( = JCM 15649T = DSM 21771T).

Two Gram-negative, motile, non-spore-forming and slightly halophilic rods (strains SW-145T and SW-156T) were isolated from sea water of the Yellow Sea in Korea. Strains SW-145T and SW-156T grew optimally at 37 and 30–37 °C, respectively, and in the presence of 2–6 % (w/v) NaCl. Strains SW-145T and SW-156T were chemotaxonomically characterized as having ubiquinone-9 as the predominant respiratory lipoquinone and C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c, C16 : 1 ω9c and C12 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of strains SW-145T and SW-156T were 58 and 57 mol%, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains SW-145T and SW-156T fell within the evolutionary radiation enclosed by the genus Marinobacter. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains SW-145T and SW-156T were 94·8 % similar. Strains SW-145T and SW-156T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity levels of 94·3–98·1 and 95·4–97·7 %, respectively, with respect to the type strains of all Marinobacter species. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness, together with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values, indicated that strains SW-145T and SW-156T are members of two species that are distinct from seven Marinobacter species with validly published names. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genotypic distinctiveness, strains SW-145T (=KCTC 12185T=DSM 16070T) and SW-156T (=KCTC 12184T=DSM 16072T) should be placed in the genus Marinobacter as the type strains of two distinct novel species, for which the names Marinobacter flavimaris sp. nov. and Marinobacter daepoensis sp. nov. are proposed.
