During studies on the endophytic yeast communities associated with fruits from Vietnam, three fermenting yeast strains were isolated from fruits of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of the ITS regions and D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene showed that these strains represented a single species of the Yamadazyma clade that was distinct from the other related species. The new species represented a basal branch of the clade formed by the Yamadazyma species i.e. Y. insecticola and Y. takamatsuzukensis. Based on the phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic characteristics, the studied strains were assigned to a novel species of the genus Yamadazyma, for which the name Yamadazyma cocois f.a., sp. nov. is proposed. The holotype is VCIM 4241, with the ex-type cultures VTCC 920004=VKM Y-3049=KBP Y-6091 code 17–68. The MycoBank number is MB 834435.

In the present work, we investigated the phylogenetic position and phenotypic characteristics of eight yeast isolates collected from migratory birds on the island of Ustica, Italy. A phylogenetic analysis based on the D1/D2 region of the large-subunit rRNA gene showed that all isolates clustered as a single separate lineage within the Wickerhamomyces clade. They exhibited distinct morphological and physiological characteristics and were clearly separated from their closest relatives, Wickerhamomyces lynferdii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Wickerhamomyces subpelliculosus, in blastn searches. On the basis of the isolation source, physiological features and molecular strain typing carried out with randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR and minisatellite-primed (MSP)-PCR analysis, the isolates were identified as strains of the same species. The name Wickerhamomyces sylviae f.a., sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these novel strains; the type strain is U88A2T ( = PYCC 6345T = CBS 12888T). The MycoBank number is MB 804762.

Four strains of a novel heterothallic yeast species were isolated from rotten wood samples collected at different locations in Hungary. Analysis of sequences of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene placed the novel species in the genus Spencermartinsiella. The novel species can be distinguished from Spencermartinsiella europaea, the single species of the genus, and from Candida cellulosicola, the only recognized anamorphic species of the Spencermartinsiella clade, on the basis of standard phenotypic characteristics. The relatedness among the four strains of the novel species and two closely related strains representing undescribed yeast species is discussed. The name Spencermartinsiella ligniputridi sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate the four novel strains. The type and isotype strains of Spencermartinsiella ligniputridi sp. nov. are NCAIM Y.01992T ( = CBS 12585T = NRRL Y-48818T) and NCAIM Y.01936I ( = CBS 12586I = NRRL Y-48819I), respectively. Two additional strains are NCAIM Y.01991 and NCAIM Y.01993.

Anamorphic basidiomycetous yeast strains RS090T and RS092 were isolated from a soil sample collected on Rishiri Island in the Rishiri, Rebun, Sarobetsu National Park, Hokkaido, Japan. As the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of their large-subunit rRNA genes were identical and those of the internal transcribed spacer regions differed in only four bases, we conclude that they belong to a single species with intraspecific diversity. Phylogenetically, this species was related to Dioszegia buhagiarii and Dioszegia hungarica, in the Tremellales, Tremellomycetes, Basidiomycota, but was clearly distinct from them. Based on the results of sequence analyses and phenotypic characteristics, we conclude that they belong to a novel species in the genus Dioszegia, for which the name Dioszegia rishiriensis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain RS090T ( = JCM 16282T  = CBS 11844T).

A novel ascomycetous yeast, designated strain N7a-Y2T, was isolated from soil collected in a potato field in Ochang, Korea, and its taxonomic position was studied. A neighbour-joining tree based on the D1/D2 domain of large-subunit rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate was a member of the Wickerhamomyces clade and that it was closely related to Wickerhamomyces bisporus, Candida quercuum, Candida ulmi and Wickerhamomyces alni. Strain N7a-Y2T formed Saturn-shaped ascospores in unconjugated and persistent asci. D1/D2 domain 26S rRNA gene sequence divergences of 11.0–21.1 % between strain N7a-Y2T and other members of the Wickerhamomyces clade indicate that the strain represents a novel species of the genus Wickerhamomyces, for which the name Wickerhamomyces ochangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N7a-Y2T ( = KCTC 17870T  = CBS 11843T).

Five strains (RV5T, RV140, R31T, RS17 and RS28T) representing three novel anamorphic ascomycetous yeast species were isolated by membrane filtration from estuarine waters collected from a mangrove forest in Laem Son National Park, Ranong Province, Thailand, on different occasions. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large-subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer region and phylogenetic analysis, three strains were found to represent two novel Candida species. Two strains (RV5T and RV140) represented a single novel species, for which the name Candida laemsonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RV5T (=BCC 35154T =NBRC 105873T =CBS 11419T). Strain R31T was assigned to a novel species that was named Candida andamanensis sp. nov. (type strain R31T =BCC 25965T =NBRC 103862T =CBS 10859T). On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large-subunit rRNA gene and phylogenetic analysis, strains RS17 and RS28T represented another novel species of Candida, for which the name Candida ranongensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RS28T (=BCC 25964T =NBRC 103861T =CBS 10861T).

Three apiculate yeast strains, EJ7M09T, GJ5M15 and GJ15M04, isolated from mushrooms in Taiwan were found to represent a novel species of the genus Kloeckera. The phylogenetically closest relative of this novel species is Hanseniaspora occidentalis, but the type strain of H. occidentalis differed by 4.6 % divergence (25 substitutions; 5 gaps) in the sequence of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene. This difference clearly suggests that the three strains represent a distinct species. As none of the strains that were examined in this study produced ascospores or exhibited conjugation on common sporulation medium either alone or in a pairwise mixture, this species could be considered as an anamorphic member of the genus Hanseniaspora, and a novel species, Kloeckera taiwanica sp. nov., is proposed, with EJ7M09T ( = BCRC 23182T = CBS 11434T) as the type strain.

During an investigation of the yeast communities associated with wild fruit shrubs in Dagestan (Caucasus, Russia), four fermenting ascospore-producing yeast strains were isolated from leaves of the Georgian honeysuckle (Lonicera iberica M. Bieb.) and from soil underneath this plant. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenated sequences of the ITS region and D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene and concatenated sequences of the ribosomal DNA cystron, RPB2 and TEF1 genes showed that the isolated strains represented a new species of the genus Zygotorulaspora. The new species was placed in the basal position to other species of the clade and close to Zygotorulaspora mrakii. Based on the results of phylogenetic analyses and the phenotypic characteristics of the four studied strains, a novel species is described, for which the name Zygotorulaspora dagestanica sp. nov. is proposed. The holotype is KBP Y-4591T, three metabolically inactive cryopreserved isotype cultures are DSM 100088, VKM Y-3060 and VKPM Y-4318. The MycoBank number is MB 838285.

Thirteen strains of yeasts typical of the genus Moniliella were isolated from fermenting meat and meat processing tools in Vietnam. PCR fingerprints generated by primer (GAC)5 subdivided the strains into two distinctive genetic groups. In a phylogenetic tree based on D1/D2 large subunit rRNA gene sequences, the strains formed a well-supported clade with Moniliella spathulata and Moniliella suaveolens but represented two new lineages. The names Moniliella carnis sp. nov. and Moniliella dehoogii sp. nov. are proposed. The two novel species can be distinguished from each other and from known species of Moniliella based on phenotypic characteristics. It is assumed that the yeasts were associated with fatty substances that contaminated the meat processing tools. The type strain of Moniliella carnis is KFP 246T ( = CBS 126447T = NRRL Y-48681T) and the type strain of Moniliella dehoogii is KFP 211T ( = CBS 126564T = NRRL Y-48682T).

Twenty-four yeast strains were isolated from ephemeral flowers of Ipomoea spp. and Datura sp. and their associated insects in the Galápagos Archipelago, Ecuador, and from Ipomoea spp. and associated insects in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene indicated that these strains belong to a novel yeast species of the Kodamaea clade, although the formation of ascospores was not observed. The closest relative is Candida restingae. The human-mediated dispersion of this species by transpacific contacts in ancient times is suggested. The name Kodamaea transpacifica f.a., sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these isolates. The type strain is CLQCA-24i-070T ( = CBS 12823T = NCYC 3852T); MycoBank number MB 803609.

Seven strains representing a novel yeast species belonging to the genus Cryptococcus were isolated from different substrates from Patagonia, Argentina, and The Netherlands. Three strains were isolated from a meltwater river draining from the Frias glacier at Mount Tronador situated in Nahuel Huapi National Park (Patagonia) and four were isolated from apple surfaces in Randwijk, The Netherlands. Analysis of the D1/D2 large-subunit rRNA gene and ITS region sequences indicated that these strains represent a single species that is distinct from other species of the Tremellales clade. The name Cryptococcus spencermartinsiae sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these strains. The type strain is CRUB 1230T (=CBS 10760T =DBVPG 8010T).
