A new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, namely, poly[[diaqua-[μ4-2,2′-[terephthaloylbis(azanediyl)]diacetato]calcium(II)] monohydrate], {[Ca(C12H10N2O6)(H2O)2]·H2O} n , (I), has been synthesized by the reaction of CaCl2 with 2,2′-[terephthaloylbis(azanediyl)]diacetic acid (H2 L). The title compound was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy. In the crystal structure of (I), each CaII cation binds to six carboxylate groups from four symmetry-related L 2− dianions. The hexadentate L 2− ligand links four symmetry-related calcium cations into a 2D layer-like structure, which can be simplified as a uninodal SP 2-periodic (3,6)III net with the point symbol (43·63). In the lattice, all layers pack in parallel arrays through weak interlayer hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions. The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of (I) have been investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals the different thermal stabilities of the two coordinated water molecules due to their different hydrogen-bonding interactions. The title coordination polymer exhibits an excitation-wavelength-dependent fluorescence in the solid state.

In recent years, much initial interest and enthusiasm has focused on the self-assembly of coordination polymers due to the aesthetics of their crystalline architectures and their potential applications as new functional materials. As part of an exploration of chiral coordination polymers, a new twofold interpenetrated two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, namely, poly[[tetraaquabis[μ3-(2R,2′R)-2,2′-(benzene-1,4-dicarboxamido)dipropionato-κ5 O,O′:O′′,O′′′:O′′]dicadmium(II)] trihydrate], {[Cd2(C14H14N2O6)2(H2O)4]·3H2O} n , has been synthesized by the reaction of Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O with the designed ligand (2R,2′R)-2,2′-(benzene-1,4-dicarboxamido)dipropionic acid (H2 L). The compound has been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the crystal structure, each CdII cation binds to three carboxylate groups from two crystallographically independent L 2− dianions. Four carboxylate groups link two crystallographically independent cadmium cations into a 4,4-connected secondary building unit (SBU). The resulting SBUs are extended into a two-dimensional folding sheet via the terephthalamide moiety of the ligand as a spacer, which can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 4,4L15 net with the point symbol (3.53.62)(32.52.62). In the lattice, two independent folding sheets interpenetrate each other to yield a double-sheet layer. The resulting 2D layers pack in parallel arrays through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and interlayer π–π interactions. The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of the title compound have been investigated and it exhibits an enhanced fluorescence emission and a longer lifetime compared with free H2 L.

A new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, namely, poly[[diaqua[μ3-(S)-2-(benzylamino)succinato-κ4 N,O 1:O 1′:O 4]cadmium(II)] monohydrate], {[Cd(C11H11NO4)(H2O)2]·H2O} n , has been synthesized by the solvothermal reaction of Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O with the synthesized ligand (S)-2-(benzylamino)succinic acid (H2 L). The title compound has been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the crystal structure, each CdII cation binds to three carboxylate groups from three symmetry-related L 2− dianions. The tetradentate L 2− ligand links three symmetry-related CdII cations into a 2D folding sheet, which can be simplified as a uninodal (3,3)-connected hcb net with the point symbol (63). In the lattice, all the folding sheets are arranged in an interdigitated fashion and aggregate into zipper-like arrays through interlayer π–π interactions. The large and nonpolar side chain may play an important role in the formation and aggregation of the 2D sheet. The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of the title compound were investigated, and it exhibits a blue emission with a quantum yield of 8%.

In the title coordination polymer, [Zn2(C14H8N2O4)2(C12H10N2)]n, the asymmetric unit contains one ZnIIcation, two halves of 2,2′-(diazene-1,2-diyl)dibenzoate anions (denotedL2−) and half of a 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)ethene ligand (denoted bpe). The three ligands lie across crystallographic inversion centres. Each ZnIIcentre is four-coordinated by three O atoms of bridging carboxylate groups from threeL2−ligands and by one N atom from a bpe ligand, forming a tetrahedral coordination geometry. Two ZnIIatoms are bridged by two carboxylate groups ofL2−ligands, generating a [Zn2(CO2)2] ring. Each loop serves as a fourfold node, which links its four equivalent nodesviathe sharing of fourL2−ligands to form a two-dimensional [Zn2L4]nnet. These nets are separated by bpe ligands acting as spacers, producing a three-dimensional framework with a 4664topology. Powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state photoluminescence were also measured.

Two new one-dimensional (1-D) Pb(II) coordination polymers, namely, [Pb(3-pdip)(L1)]·H2O (1) and [Pb(3-pdip)(L2)] (2) [L1H2 = 1,6-hexanedioic acid, L2H2 = homophthalic acid, 3-pdip = 2-(3-pyridyl)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline] have been obtained from hydrothermal reactions of Pb(II) nitrate with the phenanthroline derivative and the two dicarboxylic acids. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 is a staircase-like double-chain coordination polymer constructed from binuclear [Pb2N4O8] subunits and pairs of [L1]2− anions. Compound 2 is a linear coordination polymer connected via two μ2-η2:η1 carboxylate groups from [L2]2− anions. Furthermore, adjacent chains of 1 and 2 are extended into 3-D supramolecular networks by hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking interactions. The organic carboxylic acids with different flexibility determine the structures of the coordination polymers. Moreover, the thermal stabilities and photoluminescence properties of compounds 1 and 2 were investigated.

Crystals of poly[[aqua[μ3-4-carboxy-1-(4-carboxylatobenzyl)-2-propyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylato-κ5 O 1 O 1′:N 3,O 4:O 5][μ4-1-(4-carboxylatobenzyl)-2-propyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylato-κ7 N 3,O 4:O 4,O 4′:O 1,O 1′:O 1]cadmium(II)] monohydrate], {[Cd2(C15H14N2O4)(C16H14N2O6)(H2O)]·H2O} n or {[Cd2(Hcpimda)(cpima)(H2O)]·H2O} n , (I), were obtained from 1-(4-carboxybenzyl)-2-propyl-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (H3cpimda) and cadmium(II) chloride under hydrothermal conditions. The structure indicates that in-situ decarboxylation of H3cpimda occurred during the synthesis process. The asymmetric unit consists of two Cd2+ centres, one 4-carboxy-1-(4-carboxylatobenzyl)-2-propyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylate (Hcpimda2−) anion, one 1-(4-carboxylatobenzyl)-2-propyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylate (cpima2−) anion, one coordinated water molecule and one lattice water molecule. One Cd2+ centre, i.e. Cd1, is hexacoordinated and displays a slightly distorted octahedral CdN2O4 geometry. The other Cd centre, i.e. Cd2, is coordinated by seven O atoms originating from one Hcpimda2− ligand and three cpima2− ligands. This Cd2+ centre can be described as having a distorted capped octahedral coordination geometry. Two carboxylate groups of the benzoate moieties of two cpima2− ligands bridge between Cd2 centres to generate [Cd2O2] units, which are further linked by two cpima2− ligands to produce one-dimensional (1D) infinite chains based around large 26-membered rings. Meanwhile, adjacent Cd1 centres are linked by Hcpimda2− ligands to generate 1D zigzag chains. The two types of chains are linked through a μ2-η2 bidentate bridging mode from an O atom of an imidazole carboxylate unit of cpima2− to give a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer. The simplified 2D net structure can be described as a 3,6-coordinated net which has a (43)2(46.66.83) topology. Furthermore, the FT–IR spectroscopic properties, photoluminescence properties, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern and thermogravimetric behaviour of the polymer have been investigated.

Each CdII centre is seven-coordinated by five O atoms of bridging/chelating carboxylate groups from three dtdb2− ligands and by two N atoms from one phen ligand, forming a distorted pentagonal–bipyramidal geometry. The CdII cations are bridged by dtdb2− anions to give a two-dimensional (4,4) layer. The layers are stacked to generate a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture via a combination of aromatic C—H...π and π–π interactions. The thermogravimetric and luminescence properties of this compound were also investigated.

The interaction between the uranyl cation, (UO2)2+, and organic species is of interest due to the potential applications of the resulting compounds with regard to nuclear waste disposal and nuclear fuel reprocessing. The hydrothermal reaction of various uranyl compounds with flexible zwitterionic 1,1′-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(pyridin-1-ium-4-carboxylate) dihydrochloride (Bpmb·2HCl) in deionized water containing drops of H2SO4resulted in the formation of a novel two-dimensional uranyl coordination polymer, namely poly[tetraoxido{μ2-1,1′-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(pyridin-1-ium-4-carboxylate)}di-μ3-sulfato-diuranium(VI)], [(UO2)2(SO4)2(C20H16N2O4)]n, (1). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that this coordination polymer exhibits a layered arrangement and the (UO2)2+centre is coordinated by five equatorial O atoms. The structure was further characterized by FT–IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The polymer shows high thermal stability up to 696 K. Furthermore, the photoluminescence properties of (1) has also been studied, showing it to exhibit a typical uranyl fluorescence.
