Michael addition–halogenation–intramolecular ring-closing (MHIRC) reactions are processes in which a halogen atom as a leaving group can attach to substrates or reactants during the reaction, which then undergoes intramolecular ring closure. In this communication the MHIRC transformation of 4-benzylidene-3-phenylisoxazol-5(4H)-one and 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid in the presence of N-bromosuccinimide and sodium acetate in EtOH at room temperature was carefully investigated to give novel 1,3-dimethyl-3′,5-diphenyl-1,5-dihydro-2H,5′H-spiro[furo[2,3-d]pyrimi- dine-6,4′-isoxazole]-2,4,5′(3H)-trione in a good yield. The structure of the new compound was confirmed by the results of elemental analysis as well as mass, nuclear magnetic resonance, and infrared spectroscopy.

Novel halogen ring-disubstituted propyl 2-cyano-3-phenyl-2-propenoates, RPhCH=C(CN)CO2C3H7 (where R is 2-fluoro-5-methyl, 3-iodo-4-methoxy, 5-iodo-2-methoxy, 3,5-dichloro, 3,4-difluoro, 3,5-difluoro, 2-chloro-4-fluoro, 2-chloro-6-fluoro, 3-chloro-2-fluoro, and 3-chloro-4-fluoro) were prepared and copolymerized with styrene. The propenoates were synthesized by the piperidine catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of ring-disubstituted benzaldehydes and propyl cyanoacetate, and characterized by CHN elemental analysis, IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR. All the propenoates were copolymerized with styrene (M1) in solution with radical initiation (ABCN) at 70C. The composition of the copolymers was calculated from nitrogen analysis, and the structures were analyzed by IR, 1H and 13C-NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA. Decomposition of the copolymers in nitrogen occurred in two steps, first in the 200-500ºC range with residue (1-3% wt.), which then decomposed in the 500-800ºC range.

In this study we report biofuel potential in waste cake obtained from oil refinery. The sample was analyzed for its calorific value using auto bomb calorimeter (LECO AC-500), proximate analysis using Thermogravimetric analyzer (LECO 701) and elemental analysis using CHNS analyzer (LECO Tru-Spec). The elemental analysis of dry waste cake vs wet cake depicted the percentage composition of carbon (49.8%, 40.8%), hydrogen (7.9%, 6.0%), nitrogen (2.8%, 1.9%), Sulphur (1.9%, 0.5%) and oxygen content (37.6%, 40.4%). As for as the thermal degradation behavior of dry and wet cake in TGA is concerned, higher moisture contents (68.50%) found in wet cake and lower in dry cake (40.1%). Whereas the volatile matter in dry cake (30.9%) and low volatile in wet cake (14.3%). Similarly, %age of ash become high in dry cake (17.3%) and low in wet cake (5.11%). The results reflected that higher heating value of dry waste cake is higher (22.5 MJ/kg) than wet waste cake (20.5 MJ/kg) and commonly used sugarcane bagasse (17.88 MJ/kg).

Elemental analysis is a powerful analytical tool for purity determination. However, it is prone to manipulations. Herein, we introduce an approach to provide original elemental analysis data, allowing verification of the currently just listed values.

In examining for unique insecticidal agents, two derivatives namely, 2-((3-cyano-4,6-distyrylpyridin-2-yl)thio)-N-(4-nitrophenyl)acetamide (2) and 3-amino-N-(4-nitrophenyl)-4,6-distyrylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide (3) were synthesized from distyrylpyridine-2-thione (1). The new compounds were structurally clarified by spectral and elemental analysis data. The insecticidal activity of these compounds were carried out against cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch. It is demonstrated that the compounds 2 and 3 have noteworthy insecticidal activity against nymphs of cowpea aphid with LC50 values of 0.025-0.027 ppm and 0.005-0.006 ppm after 24 h and 48 h of treatment, respectively. Also, the compounds 2 and 3 have noteworthy insecticidal activity against adults of cowpea aphid with LC50 values of 0.112-0.129 ppm and 0.014-0.015 ppm after 24 h and 48 h of treatment, respectively, that were comparable to that of the control acetamiprid.
