Sign language is a visual language for communication used by hearing-impaired people with the help of hand and finger movements. Indian Sign Language (ISL) is a well-developed and standard way of communication for hearing-impaired people living in India. However, other people who use spoken language always face difficulty while communicating with a hearing-impaired person due to lack of sign language knowledge. In this study, we have developed a 3D avatar-based sign language learning system that converts the input speech/text into corresponding sign movements for ISL. The system consists of three modules. Initially, the input speech is converted into an English sentence. Then, that English sentence is converted into the corresponding ISL sentence using the Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique. Finally, the motion of the 3D avatar is defined based on the ISL sentence. The translation module achieves a 10.50 SER (Sign Error Rate) score.

Distance language learning is a real challenge to both teachers and learners, since the students’ exposure to the target language in a distance learning system is not as authentic and interactive as required. Additionally, it also entails a significant reduction in the amount of students’ interaction and in the support from both the teacher and other learners, which has a negative impact on students’ levels of motivation and achievement. In the hope of enhancing the distance teaching-learning process of a language and compensating for the previously mentioned drawbacks, a number of technological tools are currently being implemented. However, these technologies have also brought about new challenges that need to be addressed by policy makers, materials developers, teachers and students, if they are to be successfully implemented.

L2 language learning is an activity that is becoming increasingly ubiquitous and learner-centric in order to support lifelong learning. Applications for learning are constrained by multiple technical and educational requirements and should support multiple platforms and multiple approaches to learning. This chapter investigates the possibility of applying ontology-based, dynamically generated learning objects implemented on a cloud computing infrastructure in order to satisfy these requirements. Previous work on using mobile learning objects is used as a starting point in an attempt to design a system that will preserve all of the advantages of utilizing learning objects, while eliminating any flaws and maximizing compatibility with existing systems. A model of a highly modular, flexible, multiplatform language learning system is presented along with some implementation remarks and advices for future implementation.

The acquisition of foreign language competencies has become one of the main concerns of current ICT educational policies. Mobile smart devices allow teachers to provide students with personalized learning environments in line with their needs. However, most of the available apps, especially in the area of foreign language learning, still focus on form-based learning supporting mainly one-way interaction. In this chapter, the authors designed a learning system based on a dynamic, asynchronous and constructive learning approach. The chapter illustrates how the system helped students to get involved in their learning process by creating, sharing, and assessing their own learning resources and how teachers could benefit from students' logs to retrieve indicators for assessment processes. Finally, two algorithms that guide students' learning processes are compared: the first algorithm is based on community-driven behaviour, the second one on students' individual behaviour. Results show that both algorithms provide similar outcomes.
