The aim of the article was to explore ways in which formal and non-formal skills development programmes can be improved for education continuity and employability of marginalised youth. This is attributed to the fact that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with its related lockdowns is causing not only unprecedented disruption in the provision of skills, but also catalysed innovation in distance learning. A qualitative case study with some elements of action research, systematic inquiry and non-participant classroom observation with capability and empowerment theories supported the inquiries. Thematic analysis was used. Results reveal that while access to skills development was maintained in some spaces through a rapid shift to distance learning, the pre-existing social and digital divides deprived marginalized groups of continued learning and putting them behind schedule. Many institutions and learners lack operational distance-learning platforms, digital skills and devices. Save for the few exceptions, distance learning policies by the government have not yet been able to facilitate the acquisition of practical skills, which are critical components for the success of education and employability. Evidence points not only to pedagogical dimensions with educator’s incompetence to provide a supportive environment, but also to designing structured educational resources versus the abundance of online resources, disruptions to assessment and certification, and a general decline in the quality of practical training causing demotivation among learners and educators. The general increased economic hardship has also increased the likelihood of marginalised youth dropping out of education. The study recommends a robust shift on how skills are delivered-shift to digital literacy and adoption to technology, forge national and regional public private partnerships to increase the availability of accessible distance learning solutions, allocate more financial resources, develop new training programmes by marrying curricula to real life working situations, assess and certify online for educational continuity and employability.

Distance learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic presented tremendous challenges for many families. Parents were expected to support children’s learning, often while also working from home. Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are at particularly high risk for setbacks due to difficulties with organization and increased risk of not participating in scheduled online learning. This paper explores how smartwatch technology, including timing notifications, can support children with ADHD during distance learning due to COVID-19. We implemented a 6-week pilot study of a Digital Health Intervention (DHI) with ten families. The DHI included a smartwatch and a smartphone. Google calendars were synchronized across devices to guide children through daily schedules. After the sixth week, we conducted parent interviews to understand the use of smartwatches and the impact on children’s functioning, and we collected physiological data directly from the smartwatch. Our results demonstrated that children successfully adopted the use of the smartwatch, and parents believed the intervention was helpful, especially in supporting the development of organizational skills in their children. Overall, we illustrate how even simple DHIs, such as using smartwatches to promote daily organization and task completion, have the potential to support children and families, particularly during periods of distance learning. We include practical suggestions to help professionals teach children with ADHD to use smartwatches to improve organization and task completion, especially as it applies to supporting remote instruction.

Mathematics achievement is an essential part of a student's academic achievement. However, teaching and learning mathematics is a significant concern in education, especially in distance learning.  This paper described the algebraic skill level and academic achievement in mathematics of Grade 7 students of a Chinese high school. Also, it determined the difference in their level of algebraic skills according to learning modality. It determined whether a significant relationship exists between algebraic skills and academic achievement. Using the researcher-made questionnaire and students' secondary data (average grade from the first quarter to the fourth quarter in Mathematics), mean, standard deviation, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman's rho were used. Results reveal that the level of algebraic skills were average while academic achievement levels were approaching proficient. No significant difference was found in their algebraic skills level according to learning modality. However, the significant low relationship was found between the students’ level of algebraic skills and academic achievement.

The question of a healthy way of life of students in the conditions of quarantine restrictions is considered. The urgency of scientific research is caused by the sharp deterioration of the physical and mental condition of students due to the introduction of quarantine in the country caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and in higher education institutions of distance learning. A necessary main prerequisite for maintaining health in quarantine is a healthy lifestyle, as a system of conditions that contribute to the strengthening and preservation of health. The purpose of the work is to identify areas for ensuring a healthy lifestyle of students during quarantine in the educational process of physical education. Research methods: theoretical analysis, systematization, comparison, generalization of literature data. According to the results of scientific research, the important and unique importance of physical education in the process of ensuring a healthy lifestyle of students has been proved. The directions of ensuring a healthy lifestyle of students during quarantine in the educational process of physical education are systematized: formation of students 'stable motivations for a healthy lifestyle application of all possible technologies in classroom and extracurricular physical education classes to educate students' needs and ability to maintain and improve their health. I; to provide students with a wide range of knowledge, on the basis of which the worldview of a healthy lifestyle should be formed; acquaintance of students with alternative methods of usual physical activity, for counteraction to negative consequences of quarantine and social isolation; development of programs and technological models of forming a healthy lifestyle by means of physical culture; development of methodical recommendations on physical education on the basis of innovative methods adapted for use at home during quarantine, in the situation of impossibility to use sports halls of educational institutions, sports clubs and playgrounds. The practical implementation of the findings is aimed at radical changes that will affect the development of physical education to ensure the health of students.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 forced educational sectors worldwide to implement various distance learning modalities. In the Philippines, printed modular distance learning modality was implemented to continue delivering quality and relevant education amid the pandemic. Thus, this study assessed the quality and implementation of PMDL in public elementary schools. Likewise, this study ranked the challenges encountered by the teachers in the quality and implementation of PMDL. Using descriptive and inferential analyses, the results revealed that both quality and implementation of PMDL were consistently excellent, indicating the adherence of the modality to the national standards set by the Department of Education. However, significantly lower quality of PMDL among small and medium schools and the encountered challenges of teachers on assessments, activities, outputs, parents' incapacity, inconsistent participation, and compliance established the need for instructional supervision.

Distance learning has been adopted as a very extended model during COVID-19-related confinement. It is also a methodology that can be applied in environments where people do not have easy access to schools. In this study, we automatically classify students as a function of their performance and we describe the best self-learning methodologies in distance learning, which will be useful both in confinement or for people with difficult access to schools. Due to the different learning scenarios provided by the different confinement conditions in the COVID-19 pandemic, we have performed the classification considering data before, during, and after COVID-19 confinement. Using a field experiment of 396 students, we have described the temporal evolution of students during all courses from 2016/2017 to 2020/2021. We have found that data obtained in the last month before the final exam of the subject include the most relevant information for a correct detection of students at risk of failure. On the other hand, students who obtain high scores are much easier to identify. Finally, we have concluded that the distance learning applied in COVID-19 confinement changed not only teaching strategies but also students’ strategies when learning autonomously.

Pembelajaran jarak jauh menjadi alternatif pelaksanaan pembelajaran ditengah pandemi coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Pelaksanaan pembelajaran secara daring tentunya akan berdampak pada keefektifan dari capaian pembelajaran itu sendiri. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui keefektifan pembelajaran jarak jauh bagi siswa kelas X jurusan Otomatisasi dan Tata Kelola Perkantoran (OTKP) pada mata pelajaran korespondensi di SMKN 2 Blitar berdasarkan 4 indikator keefektifan pembelajaran, yakni mutu pengajaran, tingkat pengajaran yang tepat, insentif dan waktu. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian survey dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Teknik pengambilan sampel dipilih berdasarkan teknik probability sampling jenis simple random sampling dengan jumlah responden sebesar 106 siswa/i. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis kuantitatif dan deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pelaksanaan pembelajaran jarak jauh bagi siswa berjalan efektif, hal ini terbukti dari perolehan hasil rata-rata sebesar 70.4% yang berada pada kategori efektif. Indikator mutu pengajaran kategori efektif (70.4%), tingkat pengajaran kategori efektif (76.1%), insentif kategori efektif (67.1%) dan indikator waktu kategori efektif (65.4%). Hasil penelitian ini dapat memberikan informasi berbasis data bagi pihak sekolah terkait pelaksanaan pembelajaran jarak jauh yang telah dilaksanakan. Sehingga dapat dijadikan sebagai salah satu bahan evaluasi dalam menyusun kebijakan yang tepat untuk menciptakan pembelajaran daring yang efektif serta dapat dijadikan bahan kajian peneliti lain. The Effectiveness of Distance Learning for Students in Correspondence Subjects Distance learning was an alternative for learning in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of distance learning for class X students majoring in Office Automation and Management (OTKP) in correspondence subjects at SMKN 2 Blitar based on 4 indicators of learning effectiveness, namely teaching quality, appropriate teaching levels, incentives, and time. This research was survey research with a quantitative approach. The sampling technique was chosen based on probability sampling technique, simple random sampling, with a sample size of 106 students. Data collection techniques using questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used quantitative and descriptive analysis techniques. The results showed that the implementation of distance learning for class X students was effective. This is evidenced by the average result of 70.4% which is in the effective category. Teaching quality indicators are effective category (70.4%), effective category teaching rate (76.1%), effective category incentives (67.1%) and time indicators are effective categories (65.4%). Results of this study can provide data-based information for school regarding the implementation of distance learning correspondence has been implemented, can be used as an evaluation material in formulating the right policies to create learning online effectively and can be used as study material for other researchers.
