Significant similarities exist between a spider web and wireless sensor network in terms of topology. Combining the unique advantages of the spider web in nature, such as invulnerability and robustness, with communication technology of a wireless sensor network presents high research value and broad development prospects. In this paper, a sort of a spiral artificial spider web based on 3D printing and its associated vibration testing device is proposed, which is used to study the transmission rule of vibration information of the spider web under given excitation conditions. It provides useful inspiration for establishment of an invulnerable communication rule of wireless sensor network. In order to investigate vibration transmission characteristics of the artificial spider web, vibration images are recorded and analyzed by a high-speed photography system, and vibration intensity is characterized by use of peak-to-peak value. Furthermore, vibration performance of the artificial spider web is studied under conditions of integrity and destruction, respectively. Our test observation reveals the vibration transmission rule of the unique structure of the spider web, providing a novel analysis method for improving invulnerability of the wireless sensor network.

Air pollution is an important environmental issue that has a direct effect on human health and ecological balance. Factories, power plants, vehicles, windblown dust and wildfires are some of the contributors to pollution. Reasonable simulation tools exist for evaluating large scale sensor networks; however, they fail to capture significant details of node operation or practical aspects of wireless communication. Real life testbeds capture the realism and bring out important aspects for further research. In this article, we present an implementation of a wireless sensor network testbed for automatic and real-time monitoring of environmental pollution for the protection of public spaces. The article describes the physical setup, the sensor node hardware and software architecture for “anytime, anywhere” monitoring and management of pollution data through a single, Web-based graphical user interface. The article presents practical issues in the integration of sensors, actual power consumption rates and develops a practical hierarchical routing methodology.

Forest fire is the most common hazard which is a great threat to the ecosystem. Remote Sensing and GIS are widely used for forest fire detection. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is an emerging technology which is used to monitor environmental parameters towards alerting forest department officers for prevention or control. In this research, the authors developed Forest Fire Information System (FFIS) that provides interface to monitor, assess and analyze the forest fire data emanating from WSN which is a part of Intelligent Forest Fire Detection System. The information system also maintains necessary details of forest fire incidents that can be used for analysis and report generation. It also has a Decision Support System (DSS) integrated into it that can be used by forest officials for strategic planning. This has been developed using PHP and MySQL. This paper is an extension of research work carried about Intelligent Forest Fire Detection System using WSN.
