In order to meet the requirements of research on steer-by-wire force feedback, a MRF- damper-based experimental system was developed. In the paper, the necessity of the experimental system was analyzed, the general structure and hardware components were introduced. The design of the rotary MRF dampers was illuminated in detail. Experiments showed that the MRF-damper-based haptic system can be used for the study of automobile steer-by-wire system.

Steer-by-wire system can improve the performance of vehicle handling stability. Removing the mechanical linkages between the front wheels and the steering wheel leads to a key technique of force feedback for steer-by-wire system. In view of the characteristic of variable torque transmission ratio for steer-by-wire system, this paper proposes a method for designing torque ratio based on the steering wheel torque characteristic for steer-by-wire system. It converts the torque ratio design into equivalent assist torque design by analyzing their relationship. It achieves the torque ratio design at different conditions based on the negative equivalent assist torque characteristic curve. Simulations and vehicle experiments are conducted by the proposed method, and the results show that the design goal has been achieved and the steering wheel torque characteristic obtained is very similar to that of the reference car.

This paper presents an evaluation of dead band in force feedback which affects on driving precision with Steer-by-Wire System by using Driving Simulator. Dead band is considered as a zero zone of a relation between Force feedback torque and hand wheel angle. Experimental was designed to focus on dead band size from 0 to ±10 degrees of Force feedback model. The result has shown that the driver has the best driving precision with dead band size of ±4 to ±6 degrees.

Safety and reliability are requirements of automobile steer by wire system. Firstly, steering force feedback subsystem of steer by wire is designed. Design of steer by wire system mechanical parts must consider effects of automobile vibration environment. Then, worm of worm drive speed reducer is modeled using ANSYS software and modal analysis is performed. Natural frequencies and vibration mode contour maps of each order are acquired. The results show that the modal analysis of worm is valid and can predict worm’s vibration performance; both structure and material affect the part’s vibration performances.

Improvement of comfort functionalities is an important distinguishing mark for competitiveness of automotive manufactures. The utilization of rotary MR actuators offers several new comfort functionalities. As an example an entry assist function is described in the following, where a rotary MR actuator is used for motion control of vehicle doors. Another possible application is force feedback generation for a steer-by-wire system. Furthermore a modeling method for eddy current phenomena is proposed, which can be used for optimizing the response time of MR actuators.
