AbstractAviation has, over the years, become an inseparable element of human life. Airplanes are very commonly used for various tasks, such as transport of passengers and goods, military attack and defence, rescue, recreation and so on. In spite of the many advantages of aviation, one cannot ignore its disadvantages. The most important disadvantages of aviation are the emissions that cause atmospheric pollution and noise. Additionally, one should remember about the decreasing stocks of non-renewable fuels. These drawbacks affect human health and the natural environment. Therefore, a good alternative to conventional drive units in aircraft may turn out to be electric drive units in the near future. The aim of this article is to check the extent to which today’s knowledge and technology allow the use of electric drive units instead of conventional aircraft drive units. This article presents the concept of electric aircraft, from the electric drive unit to its power supply system. The feasibility of designing an electric jet drive unit for a passenger aircraft was analysed based on the performances of PZL 104 Wilga 35 and Boeing B787 Dreamliner.

The powerful pulsed DC-DC converter for charging battery packs on an hybrid and electric aircraft board was constructed. It allows charging the battery during the cruise flight mode of the aircraft. The modular designed 10 kW-converter can operate as in a step-up mode as in a step-down mode in a voltage range of 130 - 300 V with a current limit of 70 A at an output voltage of 150 V. The converter`s efficiency is ~ 96 – 99 % depending on the power consumed in the load. The proposed modular design and the original multiphase control circuit can be used to build converters of different power with high efficiency.

The paper presents the design of a traction electric drive based on a linear synchronous motor with permanent magnets (PM) excitation. The electric drive is a part of the demonstration mock-up and is intended for the linear movement of a freight platform that is suspended in the air by means of the magnetic field. The drive performs a smooth movement of the platform with a required speed, platform stop, and changing of the direction of the movement. The motor inductor with permanent magnets is fixed on the platform whereas the motor stator is placed on the ground being supplied with power through а semiconductor converter. The stator consists of the independent modules that are sequentially connected to the converter as the inductor moves. Commutation of the modules and commutation the windings inside the active module is performed by the signals from some optical sensors attached to the inductor. Modular design of the motor stator and sectional feeding of its windings from the same converter allow to create a levitation mock-up with an arbitrary length of the motion path. At that all the technical solutions adopted in the drive design are directed to reducing of the drive production cost.
