Analytical Marxism involves the attempt to reconstruct Marxist theory and to refocus Marxist politics in the light of contemporary intellectual developments-especially in analytical philosophy and economic theory – and historical events-above all, the failures of Communist regimes. In order to assess this reconstruction it is necessary to bear in mind a conception of the overall Marxist project. By this standard of comparison it remains to be seen whether Analytical Marxism can effect the required kind of connection between its theory and its practice.

The article is an attempt to estimate K. Marx's economic theory. The following questions are discussed for this purpose: First, what were the true goals of Marx? Second, to what extent are they realistic and how adequate are the categories constructed and implemented by Marx to nature's and society's trends of growth? Third, is it possible to implement Marxist theory in solving contemporary economic and social problems? The purpose of the analysis is not to praise or criticize Karl Marx and, in general, Marxism, which is not so difficult to do based on historical events and facts, but to realistically evaluate Marx's economic theory and identify all the positive things in his teachings that can be used by economic science to help in overcoming obstacles to the development of modern societies.

Debate over newspaper profits centers on whether earnings are emphasized at the expense of journalistic quality. However, studies of newspaper profitability have used varying measures. This study uses economic theory to develop a long-run standard for comparison of newspaper profits. Profits earned by fifteen publicly-owned newspaper companies during an eleven-year period are compared to publishing company profits and to yields from government and corporate bonds. The comparisons show that average newspaper company profits could be considered excessive. Suggestions are made for refinement of the measures developed here.

AbstractThe problem of extended fusion and identification can be approached from a diachronic perspective. Based on our own research, as well as findings from the fields of social, political, and clinical psychology, we argue that the way contemporary emotional events shape local fusion is similar to the way in which historical experiences shape extended fusion. We propose a reciprocal process in which historical events shape contemporary identities, whereas contemporary identities shape interpretations of past traumas.

The aim of this study is to understand to what extent soliciting collective memory facilitates the appropriation of knowledge. After being informed about Milgram’s experiment on obedience to authority, students were asked to mention historical or contemporary events that came to mind while thinking about submission to authority. Main results of the factorial analysis show that the students who do not believe in the reproducibility of the experimental results oppose dramatic past events to a peaceful present, whereas those who do believe in the reproducibility of the results also mention dramatic contemporary events, thus linking past and present. Moreover, the students who do not accept the results for today personify historical events, whereas those who fully accept them generalize their impact. Therefore, according to their attitude toward this objet of knowledge, the students refer to two kinds of memory: a “closed memory,” which tends to relegate Milgram’s results to ancient history; and an “open memory,” which, on the contrary, transforms past events into a concept that helps them understand the present. Soliciting collective memory may contribute to the appropriation of knowledge provided the memory activated is an “open” one, linking past to present and going beyond the singularity of the event.

Substantive provisions of the Marx-Engels-Lenin economic theory in comparison with vital realities of XX century are critically considered in the article. Theories of surplus value, labor value, general law of capitalist accumulation, absolute and relative impoverishment of proletariat are examined. The author points to utopianism and inconsistency of Marx's theory and calls Russian economists for creation of new economic theory adequate to challenges of XXI century.
