The laminar flow air-conditioning system with 100% fresh air is used in almost all operating rooms without discrimination in Turkey. The laminar flow device which is working with 100% fresh air should be absolutely used in Type 1A operating rooms. However, there is not mandatory to use of 100% fresh air for Type 1B defined as places performed simpler operation. Compared with recirculating laminar flow, energy needs of the laminar flow with 100 % fresh air has been emerged about 40% more than re-circulated air flow. Therefore, when a recirculating laminar flow device is operated instead of laminar flow system with 100% fresh air in the Type 1B operating room, annual energy consumption will be reduced. In this study, in an operating room with recirculating laminar flow, optimal conditions have been investigated in order to obtain laminar flow form by analyzing velocity distributions at various supply velocities by using computational fluid dynamics method (CFD).

SUMMARYAn evaluation has been undertaken of the efficiency of laminar-flow ventilation in operating-rooms in which conventional operating-room clothing was used. It has been demonstrated that velocities in the region of 0·3–0·4 m/sec. will give maximum returns for effort in both down-flow and cross-flow systems. At this velocity the laminar-flow system, in terms of airborne bacteria measured at the would site, was about 11 times more effients using horizontal air-flow and 35–90 times more efficient using vertical air-flow than a plenum-ventilated operating room.

SUMMARYThe influence of obstructions and thermals on the air flow in unidirectional or laminar flow systems was studied with special reference to operating rooms. It was shown that thermals induced in the operating rooms would have little influence in the normal laminar-flow system. The importance however of obstructions such as operating lamps and personnel was shown.

Since the introduction of laminar air flow in orthopaedic theatres by Sir John Charnley, it has widely become accepted as the standard during orthopaedic procedures such as joint arthroplasty. We present a review of available current literature for the use of laminar flow operating theatre ventilation during total joint arthroplasty and examines the effectiveness of laminar flow ventilated operating theatres in preventing post-operative wound infection. Results of our findings suggest that while bacterial and air particulate is reduced by laminar air flow systems, there is no conclusive effect on the reduction of post-operative wound infections following total joint arthroplasty. We conclude that a combination of strict aseptic technique, prophylactic antibiotics and good anaesthetic control during surgery remains crucial to reduce post-operative surgical infections.

An approach to solving the problem of optimizing the climate control process in a ship`s room using elements. The specific microclimate of the ship`s premises is determined by their isolation from external atmospheric influences, small volumes and a relatively large number of people, as well as the saturation with various mechanisms, systems, devices, various cargoes transported and the features of the marine climate. Presented technical solutions at the stage of elaboration and the implementation of algorithms based on modern components assume performance of the specified requirements for normal operation of ventilation systems and conditioning of the working area. The article presents the algorithm of the methodology and calculation of elements of system of ventilation and air conditioning systems with rapidly varying air flow in one zone of production facilities. With the aim of improving the accuracy, speed and efficiency, the integrated system that combines proper ventilation, air conditioning and a quantitative regulation of intake air.
