Extension of the STEP Standard for Parametric CAD Models

The first Technical Note in this series [1] introduced the international standard ISO 10303, informally known as STEP, and the second [2] dealt with some practical aspects of using the standard for the exchange of CAD models. It was noted in [1] that the current published parts of the standard are restricted to the representation and exchange of non-parameterized models. The present contribution discusses the implications of that restriction and describes the progress of the ISO TC184/SC4 committee towards its removal. As will be shown, this extension of the STEP standard will lead to considerable benefits for industry.

Subsequent Technical Notes discussed various issues faced by users of STEP and how the ISO TC184/SC4 committee is addressing these issues. This paper presents the current move to modularize the STEP application protocol architecture. This paper describes the initial STEP architecture, requirements for improvements to the architecture, features of the new modular architecture, status and issues.

Subsequent Technical Notes discussed various issues faced by users of STEP and how the ISO TC184/SC4 committee is addressing these issues. This article discusses the representation of STEP data using the Extensible Markup Language (XML). We begin by presenting XML’s advantages as an exchange medium for STEP. We then discuss some of the issues involved in designing an XML exchange mechanism for STEP and conclude with an update of SC4’s STEP/XML activities.

ISO 10303 (STEP) is a standard for the electronic exchange of product life-cycle data. It has been continually expanded by the addition of new capabilities since its first release by ISO in 1994. Until now, the standard has not been capable of exchanging models with parameterization and constraints such as those commonly generated by modern CAD systems. This makes it difficult to modify a model for any purpose following an exchange. However, new STEP resources have been developed to rectify this situation, and the paper reports on the the first of them to reach International Standard status. It provides the capability to associate explicitly represented parameterization and constraint information with CAD models. The primary application areas are in the 2D profiles or sketches that are inherent in many CAD model constructional procedures, in the positioning and orientation of features in 3D models and in the positioning and orientation of assembly components. Other complementary new STEP resources are briefly discussed at the end of the paper.
