AAC Vitality is a six-row spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar developed by the Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. AAC Vitality had high grain yield, good resistance to lodging, and good resistance to straw break. It was late in heading and maturity. Its seed color was bright. AAC Vitality was moderately resistant to net blotch and spot blotch. AAC Vitality performs well in Ontario.

AC Hamilton is a six-rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar bred at the Plant Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and evaluated by the Eastern Canada Barley Breeding Group. It was selected from a Leger/OAC Kippen cross and is suitable for growing in Ontario, where it outyielded the check cultivars AC Stephen and Chapais. AC Hamilton is moderately resistant to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei) and is resistant to septoria leaf blotch (Septoria passerinii). Isolates of Pyrenophora teres (Died.) Drechsl. causing either net- or spot-type symptoms on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were collected in 1973 from fields near Winnipeg, Manitoba. Spot-type symptoms were similar to those of spot blotch incited by Cochliobolus sativus (Ito and Kurib.) Drechsl. ex Dastur. The cultivars Herta and Fergus, previously reported to be moderately resistant, were susceptible to both types of isolates. These two cultivars presently account for virtually all of the two-rowed barley and about half of the total barley acreage in Manitoba. The resistant hybrid lines CI 5791 and BT 201 retained their resistance to the isolates which produced net-type symptoms but were less resistant to those producing the spot type.

AAC Montrose is a six-row spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar developed by the Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. It has high yield and good resistance to lodging, neck break, and straw break. AAC Montrose performs well in Ontario.

AC Harper is a six-row yellow aleurone, hulled, spring feed barley with smooth awns, suitable for the Canadian prairies. AC Harper was developed from a cross between a scald resistant backcross line of Galt and BT364, which has high grain yield and strong straw. It has a combination of high yield potential, good resistance to lodging, short straw, and resistance to scald. AC Harper has improved kernel plumpness, protein content, and kernel colour compared to the feed check, Brier.Key words: Hordeum vulgare L., barley (six-row spring feed)

The modified augmented design (MAD) (type 2), which adjusts for environmental heterogeneity when large numbers of test lines are being evaluated in non-replicated plots, has been used in the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) breeding program at the Lethbridge Research Centre. The superiority of test lines selected from two series of F7 test lines selected using the MAD were evaluated in replicated MAD tests (F8) and superior selections were further evaluated in standard replicated designs (F9). When adjustment was indicated for individual MAD tests, the generally high relative efficiencies (RE) confirmed the effectiveness of adjustment in reducing the error variation for yield. The need for adjustment and the adjustment method differed among replicates of the MAD conducted on adjacent blocks of land. The RE from replicated MAD tests indicated the effectiveness of the MAD for reducing the variability in the tests of F8 material. Correlations of the ranks of test lines in different replicates of MAD indicated that more of the same lines in each replicate would be designated as superior with adjustment for heterogenity. The lack of significant positive rank correlations among environments and clearly identifiable improvement in the mean yield was probably the result of the narrowing range in grain yield of the test lines as well as a genotype × environment interaction. Virden is a six-row feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Brandon, Manitoba, and is adapted to the western Canadian prairies. This cultivar is late maturing, strong strawed, mid-height to tall, with large, yellow-aleuroned kernels. Virden is resistant to common root rot and stem rust, and is moderately resistant to net blotch, false loose and covered smuts. There is an average 4% increase in yield when compared to Heartland, for all of western Canada, and an average 5 and 8% increase in yield when compared to Heartland and Bedford, respectively, for Manitoba.Key words: Barley (feed) cultivar, Hordeum vulgare

Genotype by environment interaction (GEI) of 18 barley varieties was assessed during two successive rabi crop seasons so as to identify high yielding and stable barley varieties. AMMI analysis showed that genotypes (G), environment (E) and GEI accounted for 1672.35, 78.25 and 20.51 of total variance, respectively. Partitioning of sum of squares due to GEI revealed significance of interaction principal component axis IPCA1 only On the basis of AMMI biplot analysis DWRB 137 (41.03qha–1), RD 2715 (32.54qha–1), BH 902 (37.53qha–1) and RD 2907 (33.29qha–1) exhibited grain yield superiority of 64.45, 30.42, 50.42 and 33.42 per cent, respectively over farmers’ recycled variety (24.43qha–1).

It was selected from a Leger/Bruce/2/2*Leger cross. AC Burman has high yield, good test weight and is moderately resistant to loose smut (Ustilago nuda (Jens.)
