This paper focuses on: (a) the concept and use of chemically-directed assembly to integrate nanoscale quantum dots at densities above 1017 cm-3 with biomolecular interconnecting structures; and (b) the phenomena of phonon absorption and emission from holes propagating in DNA molecules that are bond on one terminus to semiconductor quantum dots.

The slow and fast propagation phenomena of optical pulses in a single semiconductor quantum dot have been investigated in the time domain. It was found that both the advancement and the slowdown of a pulse might be fulfilled by using the finite response nature of the semiconductor quantum dot.

We present a general theoretical description of the extrinsic dephasing mechanism of spectral diffusion that dominates the decoherence dynamics in semiconductor quantum dots at low temperature. We discuss the limits of random telegraph and Gaussian stochastic noises and show that the combination of both approaches in the framework of the pre-Gaussian noise theory allows a quantitative interpretation of high-resolution experiments in single semiconductor quantum dots. We emphasize the generality and the versatility of our model where the inclusion of asymmetric jump processes appears as an essential extension for the understanding of semiconductor quantum dot physics.

We study theoretically the appearance of quantum correlations in two- and three-electron scattering in single and double dots. The key role played by transport resonances into entanglement formation between the single-particle states is shown. Both reflected and transmitted components of the scattered particle wavefunction are used to evaluate the quantum correlations between the incident carrier and the bound particle(s) in the dots. Our investigation provides a guideline for the analysis of decoherence effects due to the Coulomb scattering in semiconductor quantum dots structures.

The nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction properties of water soluble ZnS semiconductor quantum dots are studied by using Z-scan technique with the action of 400 nm and 532 nm femtosecond laser pulses. The experimental results show that the three order nonlinear effect of ZnS semiconductor quantum dot is stronger in 400 nm laser pulse, and it is weaker in 532 nm laser pulse. The three order nonlinear polarization coefficient of ZnS semiconductor quantum dot is 4.58×10-13 esu with the action of 400 nm laser pulse, it is 9.22×10-14 esu with the action of 532nm laser pulse. The ZnS semiconductor quantum dot has a relatively good three order optical nonlinear effect with the action of 400nm wavelength laser pulse.

The broad absorption of light in the UV-Vis-NIR region and the size-based tunable photoluminescence color of semiconductor quantum dots make these tiny crystals one of the most attractive antennae in solar cells and phosphors in electrooptical devices.
