Kazhdan, Kostant, Binegar–Zierau and Kobayashi–Ørsted constructed a distinguished infinite-dimensional irreducible unitary representation π of the indefinite orthogonal group G = O(2p, 2q) for p, q ≥ 1 with p + q > 2, which has the smallest Gelfand–Kirillov dimension 2p + 2q - 3 among all infinite-dimensional irreducible unitary representations of G and hence is called the minimal representation. We consider, for which subgroup G′ of G, the restriction π|G′ is multiplicity-free. We prove that the restriction of π to any subgroup containing the direct product group U(p1) × U(p2) × U(q) for p1, p2 ≥ 1 with p1 + p2 = p is multiplicity-free, whereas the restriction to U(p1) × U(p2) × U(q1) × U(q2) for q1, q2 ≥ 1 with q1 + q2 = q has infinite multiplicities.

Let Γ.𝒜 be the semi-direct product group of a nuclear Lie group Γ with the additive group 𝒜 of a real nuclear vector space. We give an explicit description of all the continuous representations of Γ.𝒜 the restriction of which to 𝒜 is a cyclic unitary representation, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the unitarity of such cylindrical representations is stated. This general result is successfully used to obtain irreducible unitary representations of the nuclear Lie groups of Riemannian motions, and, in the setting of the theory of multiplicative distributions initiated by I.M. Gelfand, it is proved that for any connected real finite dimensional Lie groupGand for any strictly positive integerkthere exist non located and non trivially decomposable representations of orderkof the nuclear Lie group(M;G) of all theG-valued test-functions on a given paracompact manifoldM.

The unitary principal series representations of G = GL (n, ℂ) induced from a character of the maximal parabolic subgroup P = ( GL (1, ℂ) × GL (n - 1, ℂ)) ⋉ ℂn-1 attain the minimal Gelfand–Kirillov dimension among all infinite-dimensional unitary representations of G. We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of these representations to all reductive subgroups H of G such that (G, H) forms a symmetric pair.

A class of irreducible unitary representations in the discrete series of SUp,q is explicitly determined in a space of holomorphic functions of three complex matrices. The discrete series, which is the set of all square integrable representations, corresponds to a compact subgroup of SUp,q. The relevant algebraic properties of the group SUp,q are discussed in detail. For a degenerate irreducible unitary representation an explicit construction of the infinitesimal generators of the Lie algebra [Formula: see text] in terms of differential operators is given.

Zuckerman’s derived functor module of a semisimple Lie group [Formula: see text] yields a unitary representation [Formula: see text] which may be regarded as a geometric quantization of an elliptic orbit [Formula: see text] in the Kirillov–Kostant–Duflo orbit philosophy. We highlight a certain family of those irreducible unitary representations [Formula: see text] of the indefinite unitary group [Formula: see text] and a family of subgroups [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] such that the restriction [Formula: see text] is known to be discretely decomposable and multiplicity-free by the general theory of Kobayashi (Discrete decomposibility of the restrictions of [Formula: see text] with respect to reductive subgroups, II, Ann. of Math. 147 (1998) 1–21; Multiplicity-free representations and visible action on complex manifolds, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 41 (2005) 497–549), where [Formula: see text] is not necessarily tempered and [Formula: see text] is not necessarily compact. We prove that the corresponding moment map [Formula: see text] is proper, determine the image [Formula: see text], and compute the Corwin–Greenleaf multiplicity function explicitly.

We introduce an infinite-dimensional [Formula: see text]-adic affine group and construct its irreducible unitary representation. Our approach follows the one used by Vershik, Gelfand and Graev for the diffeomorphism group, but with modifications made necessary by the fact that the group does not act on the phase space. However, it is possible to define its action on some classes of functions.
