We obtain the existence of harmonic maps of degree one from a closed Riemann surface of genus greater than 1 with a metric admitting a plane of symmetry to the unit 2-sphere.

We use meromorphic quadratic differentials with higher order poles to parametrize the Teichmüller space of crowned hyperbolic surfaces. Such a surface is obtained on uniformizing a compact Riemann surface with marked points on its boundary components, and has noncompact ends with boundary cusps. This extends Wolf’s parametrization of the Teichmüller space of a closed surface using holomorphic quadratic differentials. Our proof involves showing the existence of a harmonic map from a punctured Riemann surface to a crowned hyperbolic surface, with prescribed principal parts of its Hopf differential which determine the geometry of the map near the punctures.

Let f be a positive smooth function on a closed Riemann surface (M, g). The f-energy of a map u from M to a Riemannian manifold (N, h) is defined as [Formula: see text] and its L2-gradient is: [Formula: see text] We will study the blow-up properties of some approximate f-harmonic map sequences in this paper. For a sequence uk : M → N with ‖τf(uk)‖L2 < C1 and Ef(uk) < C2, we will show that, if the sequence is not compact, then it must blow-up at some critical points of f or some concentrate points of |τf(uk)|2dVg. For a minimizing α-f-harmonic map sequence in some homotopy class of maps from M into N we show that, if the sequence is not compact, the blow-up points must be the minimal point of f and the energy identity holds true.

AbstractThe paper has two relatively distinct but connected goals; the first is to define the notion of Padé approximation of Weyl–Stiltjes transforms on an arbitrary compact Riemann surface of higher genus. The data consists of a contour in the Riemann surface and a measure on it, together with the additional datum of a local coordinate near a point and a divisor of degree g. The denominators of the resulting Padé-like approximation also satisfy an orthogonality relation and are sections of appropriate line bundles. A Riemann–Hilbert problem for a square matrix of rank two is shown to characterize these orthogonal sections, in a similar fashion to the ordinary orthogonal polynomial case. The second part extends this idea to explore its connection to integrable systems. The same data can be used to define a pairing between two sequences of line bundles. The locus in the deformation space where the pairing becomes degenerate for fixed degree coincides with the zeros of a “tau” function. We show how this tau function satisfies the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili hierarchy with respect to either deformation parameters, and a certain modification of the 2-Toda hierarchy when considering the whole sequence of tau functions. We also show how this construction is related to the Krichever construction of algebro-geometric solutions.

We consider the Feigin-Fuchs-Felder formalism of the SU (2)k× SU (2)l/ SU (2)k+l coset minimal conformal field theory and extend it to higher genus. We investigate a double BRST complex with respect to two compatible BRST charges, one associated with the parafermion sector and the other associated with the minimal sector in the theory. The usual screened vertex operator is extended to the BRST-invariant screened three-string vertex. We carry out a sewing operation of these vertices and derive the BRST-invariant screened g-loop operator. The latter operator characterizes the higher genus structure of the theory. An analogous operator formalism for the topological minimal model is obtained as the limit l=0 of the coset theory. We give some calculations of correlation functions on higher genus.

AbstractLet be an open Riemann surface with finite genus and finite number of boundary components, and let be a closed Riemann surface. An open continuous function from to is termed a (p, q)-map, 0 < q < p, if it has a finite number of branch points and assumes every point in either p or q times, counting multiplicity, with possibly a finite number of exceptions. These comprise the most general class of all non-trivial functions having two valences between and .The object of this paper is to study the geometry of (p, q)-maps and establish a generalized embedding theorem which asserts that the image surfaces of (p, q)-maps embed in p-fold closed coverings possibly having branch points off the image surfaces.
