Our previous experimental method and results of ( EC +β+) decay for the medium-heavy nuclei 153 Er , 157 Yb , 209 Fr , 128 Ce , 130 Ce , 128 Pr , 130 Pm and 140 Tb have been briefly summarized. The observed low-lying states in their daughter nuclei and a 11/2- isomeric state in 133 Pr have been reviewed in a systematic way and compared with different model calculations. Finally, some questions have been put forward for further study and discussion.

In a previous work it was shown that the radius of a nucleus R is determined by the α-cluster structure and can be estimated on the number of α-clusters disregarding the number of excess neutrons. A hypothesis was also made that the radius Rm of a β-stable isotope, which is actually measured at electron scattering experiments, is determined by the volume occupied by the matter of the core plus the volume occupied by the charge of the peripheral α-clusters. In this paper it is shown that the condition Rm = R restricts the number of excess neutrons filling the core to provide the β-stability. The number of peripheral clusters can vary from 1 to 5 and the value of R for heavy nuclei almost does not change, whereas the number of the excess neutrons should change with the number of peripheral clusters to provide the condition of Rm = R. It can explain the path of the β-stability and its width. The radii Rm of the stable isotopes with 12 ≤ Z ≤ 83 and the alpha-decay isotopes with 84 ≤ Z ≤ 116 that are stable to β-decay have been calculated.

Abstract β-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei around N = 82 are key data to understand the r-process nucleosynthesis. We performed large-scale shell-model calculations in this region using a newly constructed shell-model Hamiltonian, and successfully described the low-lying spectra and half-lives of neutron-rich N = 82 and N = 81 isotones with Z = 42 − 49 in a unified way. We found that their Gamow-Teller strength distributions have a peak in the low-excitation energies, which significantly contributes to the half-lives. This peak, dominated by ν0g7/2 → π0g9/2 transitions, is enhanced on the proton deficient side because the Pauli-blocking effect caused by occupying the valence proton 0g9/2 orbit is weakened.
