AbstractThis article presents a Hybrid Artificial Bee Colony (HABC) for uncapacitated examination timetabling. The ABC algorithm is a recent metaheuristic population-based algorithm that belongs to the Swarm Intelligence technique. Examination timetabling is a hard combinatorial optimization problem of assigning examinations to timeslots based on the given hard and soft constraints. The proposed hybridization comes in two phases: the first phase hybridized a simple local search technique as a local refinement process within the employed bee operator of the original ABC, while the second phase involves the replacement of the scout bee operator with the random consideration concept of harmony search algorithm. The former is to empower the exploitation capability of ABC, whereas the latter is used to control the diversity of the solution search space. The HABC is evaluated using a benchmark dataset defined by Carter, including 12 problem instances. The results show that the HABC is better than exiting ABC techniques and competes well with other techniques from the literature.

Background: Power system stability demands minimum variation in frequency, so that loadgeneration balance is maintained throughout the operation period. An Automatic Generation Control (AGC) monitors the frequency and varies the generation to maintain the balance. A system with multiple energy sources and use of a fractional controller for efficient control of stability is presented in the paper. At the outset a 2-area thermal system with governor dead band, generation rate constraint and boiler dynamics have been applied. Methods: A variation of load is deliberated for the study of the considered system with Harmony Search (HS) algorithm, applied for providing optimization of controller parameters. Integral Square Time Square Error (ISTSE) is chosen as objective function for handling the process of tuning controller parameters. : A study of similar system with various lately available techniques such as TLBO, hFA-PS and BFOA applied to PID, IDD and PIDD being compared to HS tuned fractional controller is presented under step and dynamic load change. The effort extended to a single area system with reheat thermal plant, hydel plant and a unit of wind plant is tested with the fractional controller scheme. Results: The simulation results provide a clear idea of the superiority of the combination of HS algorithm and FO-PID controller, under dynamically changing load. The variation of load is taken from 1% to 5% of the connected load. Conclusion: Finally, system robustness is shown by modifying essential factors by ± 30%.

Platformization affects the entire urban transport sector, effectively blurring the division between private and public transport modalities; existing public–private arrangements have started to shift as a result. This chapter analyzes and discusses the emergence of a platform ecology for urban transport, focusing on two central public values: the quality of urban transport and the organization of labor and workers’ rights. Using the prism of platform mechanisms, it analyzes how the sector of urban transport is changing societal organization in various urban areas across the world. Datafication has allowed numerous new actors to offer their bike-, car-, or ride-sharing services online; selection mechanisms help match old and new complementors with passengers. Similarly, new connective platforms are emerging, most prominently transport network companies such as Uber and Lyft that offer public and private transport options, as well as new platforms offering integrated transport services, often referred to as “mobility as a service.”
