The mechanisms that cause jet-flame blowout, particularly in the presence of air coflow, are not completely understood. This work examines the role of fuel velocity and air coflow in the blowout phenomenon by examining the transient behavior of the reaction zoneat blowout. The results of video imaging of a lifted methane-air diffusion flame at near blowout conditions are presented. Two types of experiments are described. In the first investigation, a flame is established and stabilized at a known, predetermined downstream location with a constant coflow velocity, and then the fuel velocity is subsequently increased to cause blowout. In the other, an ignition source is used to maintain flame burning near blowout and the subsequent transient behavior to blowout upon removal of the ignition source is characterized. Data from both types of experiments are collected at various coflow and jet velocities. Images are used to ascertain the changes in the leading edge of the reaction zone prior to flame extinction that help to develop a physically-based model to describe jet-flame blowout. The data report that a consistent predictor of blowout is the prior disappearance of the axially oriented flame branch. This is witnessed despite a turbulent flames' inherent variable behavior. Interpretations are also made in the light of analytical mixture fraction expressions from the literature that support the notion that flame blowout occurs when the leading edge reaches the vicinity of the lean-limit contour, which coincides approximately with the conditions for loss of the axially oriented flame structure.

This article describes the macroscopic and microscopic features of flames spreading over solid-fuel surfaces by examining and comparing three models. The first model examines ignition and flame spread over a solid-fuel surface using a two-dimensional numerical simulation code. This model employs variable density, variable thermophysical properties and one-step global finite-rate chemistry. The second model, a macroscopic ‘field’ model, is solved in terms of the mixture fraction ( Z ) and total enthalpy ( H ) functions. Comparisons are made with numerical predictions for primitive quantities: temperature, species distributions and velocity fields; and derived quantities: heat flux, mass flux, mixture fraction, enthalpy function and flame stretch rate. The third model yields a ‘localized’ flame structure description near the flame attachment point. Theoretical formulas are produced for the quenching distance, the leading edge heat flux, and the flame structure, as characterized by reactivity, temperature field and species distributions. The analytical predictions are compared with numerical simulations to derive flame microstructure scaling parameters.

Experimental studies on nonpremixed turbulent flames in cross flow are necessary as the current analytical and numerical tools are unable to provide acceptable quantitative information about their complex flow fields. This study, which complements the results of a previous study by the authors on the flame structure in the stabilization region of a partially lifted turbulent diffussion flame in cross-flow (TDFCF), presents the measured turbulence quantities in the flow field of the same flame. Results include mean velocities in the cross-stream and spanwise directions, the vertical and horizontal components of fluctuating components of velocity, Reynolds stress, power spectra, and autocorrelations useful for developing and validating theoretical models of TDFCF in the moderate momentum flux ratio range

A turbulent lifted slot-jet flame is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS). A one-step chemistry model is employed with a mixture-fraction-dependent activation energy which can reproduce qualitatively the dependence of the laminar burning rate on the equivalence ratio that is typical of hydrocarbon fuels. The basic structure of the flame base is first examined and discussed in the context of earlier experimental studies of lifted flames. Several features previously observed in experiments are noted and clarified. Some other unobserved features are also noted. Comparison with previous DNS modelling of hydrogen flames reveals significant structural differences. The statistics of flow and relative edge-flame propagation velocity components conditioned on the leading edge locations are then examined. The results show that, on average, the streamwise flame propagation and streamwise flow balance, thus demonstrating that edge-flame propagation is the basic stabilisation mechanism. Fluctuations of the edge locations and net edge velocities are, however, significant. It is demonstrated that the edges tend to move in an essentially two-dimensional (2D) elliptical pattern (laterally outwards towards the oxidiser, then upstream, then inwards towards the fuel, then downstream again). It is proposed that this is due to the passage of large eddies, as outlined in Su et al. (Combust. Flame, vol. 144 (3), 2006, pp. 494–512). However, the mechanism is not entirely 2D, and out-of-plane motion is needed to explain how flames escape the high-velocity inner region of the jet. Finally, the time-averaged structure is examined. A budget of terms in the transport equation for the product mass fraction is used to understand the stabilisation from a time-averaged perspective. The result of this analysis is found to be consistent with the instantaneous perspective. The budget reveals a fundamentally 2D structure, involving transport in both the streamwise and transverse directions, as opposed to possible mechanisms involving a dominance of either one direction of transport. It features upstream transport balanced by entrainment into richer conditions, while on the rich side, upstream turbulent transport and entrainment from leaner conditions balance the streamwise convection.

The effects of orifice diameter on several aspects of diesel fuel jet flame structure were investigated in a constant-volume combustion vessel under heavy-duty direct-injection (DI) diesel engine conditions using Phillips research grade #2 diesel fuel and orifice diameters ranging from 45 μm to 180 μm. The overall flame structure was visualized with time-averaged OH chemiluminescence and soot luminosity images acquired during the quasi-steady portion of the diesel combustion event that occurs after the transient premixed burn is completed and the flame length is established. The lift-off length, defined as the farthest upstream location of high-temperature combustion, and the flame length were determined from the OH chemiluminescence images. In addition, relative changes in the amount of soot formed for various conditions were determined from the soot incandescence images. Combined with previous investigations of liquid-phase fuel penetration and spray development, the results show that air entrainment upstream of the lift-off length (relative to the amount of fuel injected) is very sensitive to orifice diameter. As orifice diameter decreases, the relative air entrainment upstream of the lift-off length increases significantly. The increased relative air entrainment results in a reduced overall average equivalence ratio in the fuel jet at the lift-off length and reduced soot luminosity downstream of the lift-off length. The reduced soot luminosity indicates that the amount of soot formed relative to the amount of fuel injected decreases with orifice diameter. The flame lengths determined from the images agree well with gas jet theory for momentum-driven nonpremixed turbulent flames.

The development of a double flame structure in lifted ethanol spray flames is visualized using OH planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF). While the OH images indicate a single reaction zone exists without co-flow, the addition of low-speed co-flow facilitates the formation of a double flame structure that consists of two diverging flame fronts originating at the leading edge of the reaction zone. The outer reaction zone burns steadily in a diffusion mode, and the strained inner flame structure is characterized by both diffusion and partially premixed combustion exhibiting local extinction and re-ignition events.

Current interest exists in understanding reaction-zone dynamics and mechanisms with respect to how they counterpropagate against incoming reactants. Images of flame position and flow-field morphology are presented from flame chemiluminescence and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. In the present study, PIV experiments were carried out to measure the methane jet lifted-flame flow-field velocities in the vicinity of the flame leading edge. Specifically, velocity fields within the high-temperature zone were examined in detail, which complements previous studies, whose prime focus is the flow-field upstream of the high-temperature boundary. PIV data is used not only to determine the velocities, but, along with chemiluminescence images, to also indicate the approximate location of the reaction zone (further supported by/through the leading-edge flame velocity distributions). The velocity results indirectly support the concept that the flame is anchored primarily through the mechanism of partially premixed flame propagation.

Laminar Flamelet Model (LFM) [1–2] represents the turbulent flame brush using statistical averaging of laminar flamelets whose structure is not affected by turbulence. The chemical non-equilibrium effects considered in this model are due to local turbulent straining only. In contrast, Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) [3] model considers that the scalar evolution, the realized trajectories on the thermo-chemical manifold in a turbulent flame is approximated by the scalar evolution similar to that in a laminar flame. This model does not involve any assumption on flame structure. Therefore, it can be successfully used to model ignition, slow chemistry and quenching effects far away from the equilibrium. In FGM, 1D premixed flamelets are solved in reaction-progress space rather than physical space. This helps better solution convergence for the flamelets over the entire mixture fraction range, especially with large kinetic mechanisms at the flammability limits [4]. In the present work, a systematic comparative study of FGM model with LFM for four different turbulent diffusion/premixed flames is presented. First flame considered in this work is methane-air flame with dilution air at the downstream. Second and third flame considered are jet flames in a coaxial flow of hot combustion products from a lean premixed flame called Cabra lifted H2 and CH4 flames [5–6] where the reacting flow associated with the central jet exhibits similar chemical kinetics, heat transfer and molecular transport as recirculation burners without the complex recirculating fluid mechanic. The fourth flame considered is Sandia flame D [7], a piloted methane-air jet flame. It is observed that the simulation results predicted by FGM model are more physical and accurate compared to LFM in all the flames presented in this work.

A hybrid finite-element-volume FEV method is extended to simulate turbulent non-premixed propane air preheated flame in a minichannel. We use a detailed kinetics scheme, i.e. GRI mechanism 3.0, and the flamelet model to perform the combustion modeling. The turbulence-chemistry interaction is taken into account in this flamelet modeling using presumed shape probability density functions PDFs. Considering an upwind-biased physics for the current reacting flow, we implement the physical influence upwinding scheme PIS to estimate the cell-face mixture fraction variance in this study. To close the turbulence closure, we employ the two-equation standard κ-ε turbulence model incorporated with suitable wall functions. Supposing an optically thin limit, it needs to take into account radiation effects of the most important radiating species in the current modeling. Despite facing with so many flame instabilities in such small size configuration, the current method performs suitably with proper convergence, and the encountered instabilities are damped out automatically. Comparing with the experimental measurements, the current extended method accurately predicts the flame structure in the minichannel configuration.

In this paper, turbulent non-premixed CH4+H2 jet flame issuing into a hot and diluted co-flow air is studied numerically. This flame is under condition of the moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution (MILD) combustion regime and related to published experimental data. The modelling is carried out using the EDC model to describe turbulence-chemistry interaction. The DRM-22 reduced mechanism and the GRI2.11 full mechanism are used to represent the chemical reactions of H2/methane jet flame. The flame structure for various O2 levels and jet Reynolds numbers are investigated. The results show that the flame entrainment increases by a decrease in O2 concentration at air side or jet Reynolds number. Local extinction is seen in the upstream and close to the fuel injection nozzle at the shear layer. It leads to the higher flame entertainment in MILD regime. The turbulence kinetic energy decay at centre line of jet decreases by an increase in O2 concentration at hot Co-flow. Also, increase in jet Reynolds or O2 level increases the mixing rate and rate of reactions.
