Some complete monotonicity results that the functions±1/e±t-1are logarithmically completely monotonic, and that differences between consecutive derivatives of these two functions are completely monotonic, and that the ratios between consecutive derivatives of these two functions are decreasing on0, ∞are discovered. As applications of these newly discovered results, some complete monotonicity results concerning the polylogarithm are found. Finally a conjecture on the complete monotonicity of the above-mentioned ratios is posed.

In the paper, by virtue of convolution theorem for the Laplace transforms, Bernstein's theorem for completely monotonic functions, some properties of a function involving exponential function, and other analytic techniques, the author finds necessary and sufficient conditions for two functions defined by two derivatives of a function involving trigamma function to be completely monotonic or monotonic. These results generalize corresponding known ones.

The successive time derivatives of relative entropy and entropy production for a system with a reversible first-order reaction alternate in sign. It is proved that the relative entropy for reactions with an equilibrium constant smaller than or equal to one is completely monotonic in the whole definition interval, and for reactions with an equilibrium constant larger than one this function is completely monotonic at the beginning of the reaction and near to equilibrium.

In the paper, by convolution theorem of the Laplace transforms, a monotonicity rule for the ratio of two Laplace transforms, Bernstein's theorem for completely monotonic functions, and other analytic techniques, the author (1) presents the decreasing monotonicity of a ratio constituted via three derivatives of a function involving trigamma function; (2) discovers necessary and sufficient conditions for a function constituted via three derivatives of a function involving trigamma function to be completely monotonic. These results conform previous guesses posed by the author.

Let \(\Gamma\) and \(\psi=\frac{\Gamma'}{\Gamma}\) be respectively the classical Euler gamma function and the psi function and let \(\gamma=-\psi(1)=0.57721566\dotsc\) stand for the Euler-Mascheroni constant. In the paper, the authors simply confirm the logarithmically complete monotonicity of the power-exponential function \(q(t)=t^{t[\psi(t)-\ln t]-\gamma}\) on the unit interval \((0,1)\), concisely deny that \(q(t)\) is a Stieltjes function, surely point out fatal errors appeared in the paper [V. Krasniqi and A. Sh. Shabani, On a conjecture of a logarithmically completely monotonic function, Aust. J. Math. Anal. Appl. 11 (2014), no.1, Art.5, 5 pages; Available online at http://ajmaa.org/cgi-bin/paper.pl?string=v11n1/V11I1P5.tex], and partially solve a conjecture posed in the article [B.-N. Guo, Y.-J. Zhang, and F. Qi, Refinements and sharpenings of some double inequalities for bounding the gamma function, J. Inequal. Pure Appl. In the paper, by virtue of convolution theorem for the Laplace transforms, logarithmic convexity of the gamma function, Bernstein's theorem for completely monotonic functions, and other techniques, the author finds necessary and sufficient conditions for a difference defined by four derivatives of a function containing trigamma function to be completely monotonic. Moreover, by virtue of Cebysev integral inequality, the author presents logarithmic convexity of the sequence of polygamma functions.

AbstractNecessary and sufficient conditions are presented for a function involving the divided difference of the psi function to be completely monotonic and for a function involving the ratio of two gamma functions to be logarithmically completely monotonic. From these, some double inequalities are derived for bounding polygamma functions, divided differences of polygamma functions, and the ratio of two gamma functions.

After several years of teaching multiple sections of first-semester calculus, it was easy for me to think that I had nothing new to learn. But every year and every class bring a new group of students with their unique gifts and insights. In a recent class, after covering the derivative rules for power functions and exponential functions, I asked the class about the derivative of a function like y = xsinx, which is neither a power function (the power is not constant) nor an exponential function (the base is not constant).
