This study was designed to probe into the improvement of rehabilitation training combined with Jiaji electroacupuncture intervention on patients with upper limb peripheral nerve injury. A total of 114 patients with peripheral nerve injury of upper limbs in our hospital from August 2017 to November 2019 were collected as the research participants. Among them, 59 in the control group (CG) received rehabilitation training alone, while 65 in the observation group (OG) received rehabilitation training combined with Jiaji electroacupuncture intervention. The therapeutic efficacy, Barthel index, and Fugl–Meyer assessment score, motor nerve conduction velocity, sensory nerve conduction velocity and amplitude, and quality of life (score SF-36) were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. The total effective rate of the OG was markedly higher than that of the CG. After treatment, the Barthel index, Fugl–Meyer assessment score, motor nerve conduction velocity, and sensory nerve conduction velocity and amplitude of the OG were obviously higher than those of the CG, and the SF-36 scores of the OG were higher than those of the CG in 8 dimensions. Rehabilitation training combined with Jiaji electroacupuncture intervention can dramatically promote the recovery of muscle group function and improve the quality of life of patients with upper limb peripheral nerve injury.

Neurophysiology is a useful investigation to assess peripheral nerve injury. It consists of nerve conduction studies and electromyography, providing information on anatomical distribution of the lesion (pre/postganglionic, single/multiple nerves), whether the lesion is primarily demyelinating or axonal, and whether the lesion is in continuity, as well as the overall prognosis.

Abstract With age, peripheral nerves undergo demyelination along with overall decrease in peripheral nerve conduction velocity in both sensory and motor nerves. Loss of innervation in muscles is thought to be a major factor in causing age-related sarcopenia including a decrease in muscle function. Dietary restriction attenuates the detrimental effects of aging in mice. Reduction of mTOR signaling is hypothesized to have overlapping mechanisms with dietary restriction. Furthermore, inhibition of mTOR via rapamycin treatment is known to extend lifespan in mice as well as improve peripheral nerve myelination. Therefore, I hypothesized that reducing mTORC1 signaling in neurons would be able to ameliorate the deleterious effects of aging in peripheral nerves. An overall decrease in nerve conduction velocity was observed in both tail sensory and sural nerves with age (15 vs. 30 months). In neuronal mTORC1 KD animals, there was an age-related preservation of both sural and sciatic nerve conduction. Rapamycin treatment produced similar effects with a trend towards increased sciatic nerve conduction velocity in rapamycin-treated wild-type mice at 19 months. The preserve sciatic nerve conduction velocity could be partially explained by preserved myelination. Neuronal mTORC1 knockdown animals had more myelin in the sciatic nerve at 30 mo. as compared to age-matched controls. Overall, these data indicate that mTORC1 signaling plays a role in the age-related decline in peripheral nerve myelination as well as nerve conduction velocity. Future therapeutics could utilize rapamycin or other rapalogs to combat the decline in peripheral nerve function associated with age and other diseases as well.

Introduction Traumatic upper limb peripheral nerve injuries significantly impact individuals’ function and ability to return to work. Patients with peripheral nerve injury experience ongoing psychological impairments for which they are not routinely treated. The aim of this review was to investigate the psychological consequences of traumatic upper limb peripheral nerve injury. Methods A systematic review of MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, AMED, BNI, the Cochrane libraries and grey literature up to October 2015 was undertaken. Two reviewers independently assessed methodological quality in accordance with Cochrane Collaboration recommendations. Eligibility criteria comprised: adults or adolescents with traumatic upper limb peripheral nerve injury using any measurement of psychological well-being. Results Six studies ( n = 245) met the inclusion criteria. Methodological quality varied widely. Evidence of post-traumatic stress disorder at one month, which decreased over time, was reported in three studies. Two studies found a statistically significant correlation between the early presence of post-traumatic stress disorder and reduction in function at 12 or more months. Limited information was available on anxiety, depression and mental quality of life. Combined nerve injuries (in two studies) had significantly higher levels of post-traumatic stress disorder, at one month, compared to those with an isolated nerve injury. Conclusion There is some evidence of early post-traumatic stress disorder following traumatic upper limb peripheral nerve injury, which may have an impact on functional outcome. However, high-quality studies using prospective cohorts are required to further evaluate the psychological aspects associated with this traumatic injury.
