The quality of power that is degrading day by day is an important issue for all the consumers. The important factor for this is harmonics in the voltage and current waveforms which can be resolved by the use of hybrid series active power filter. The combination consists of a series active power filter and a shunt passive filter connected in parallel to the load. The method used in this paper is for the purpose of achieving good harmonic compensation and reduced total harmonic distortion for various types of nonlinear loads as per the standards of IEEE 519. The proposed HSAPF technique uses the synchronous reference frame method for generating the compensating signal with an intelligent PI controller that uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique to obtain the required gain values needed to improve the steady state response of the system. The concept of vigorous HSAPF has been authenticated through MATLAB simulation analysis, and the results obtained validate the accuracy of the method for the different load conditions.

Abstract In this paper, shoot-through current elimination DC–AC converter circuit has been presented with the application of active power filter (APF). The intuitive analysis of the shoot-through in the conventional DC–AC converter has been reported first. Interleaved buck (IB) converter is adopted to eliminate the shoot-through current, thereby increasing the reliability of the interleaved buck–based active power filter (IB-APF). The 3-phase 4-wire IB-APF eliminates the current harmonics produced by the load just as a conventional one does and are innately immune to “shoot-through” phenomenon, with the elimination of special protection features required in conventional inverter circuits. A comparison has been made about the compensation capabilities of the IB-APF with the PI and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) used by id–iq control strategy under different supply voltage conditions. The id–iq control strategy used for extracting the three-phase reference current for IB-APF, evaluating their performance here in MATLAB/Simulink environment and also implemented using real-time digital simulator hardware (OPAL-RT hardware). The RTDS result verifies that the total harmonic distortion percentage of the source current can be reduced below 5% according to IEEE-519 standard recommendations on harmonic limits.

The quality of power nowadays is of great concern due to increasing demand of supply and energy resources are limited, another cause is increasing penetration of nonlinear loads in the power system. In order to overcome energy supply challenges, the focus of technologists is shifting to the renewable energy side such as the wind and solar energy and so on. As such, mitigating effect of nonlinear loads have become ever important as well. In this context, various techniques have been used by researchers in past decades. Shunt active power filter (APF) have long been used to mitigate current harmonics from fixed wind turbine generator (WTG). In this study shunt APF has been applied with variable speed WTG using synchronous reference frame (SRF) for the extraction of compensation signal for APF. Gate driver signals are generated from Bang-Bang Controller (Hysteresis Band Current Controller HBCC). A MATLAB/SIMULINK based Model have been developed. The Simulation results show decreased THD levels of the system and clearly suggest the effectiveness of Shunt APF in meeting the IEEE-519 standard recommendation for harmonic levels in WTG.

This paper examines the size reduction of the fuzzy rule base without compromising the control characteristics of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). A 49-rule FLC is approximated by a 4-rule simplest FLC using compensating factors. This approximated 4-rule FLC is implemented to control the shunt active power filter (APF), which is used for harmonic mitigation in source current. The proposed control methodology is less complex and computationally efficient due to significant reduction in the size of rule base. As a result, computational time and memory requirement are also reduced significantly. The control performance and harmonic compensation capability of proposed approximated 4-rule FLC based shunt APF is compared with the conventional PI controller and 49-rule FLC under randomly varying nonlinear loads. The simulation results presented under transient and steady state conditions show that dynamic performance of approximated simplest FLC is better than conventional PI controller and comparable with 49-rule FLC, while maintaining harmonic compensation within limits. Due to its effectiveness and reduced complexity, the proposed approximation methodology emerges out to be a suitable alternative for large rule FLC.

This paper presents an investigation on mitigation of current harmonics, using Cascaded H-bridge Multilevel Converter (CHB-MLC)-based Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). Development and analysis of SAPF for harmonic compensation in distribution network for power quality improvement has been discussed. In the proposed work, transformer-less CHB MLC is used which reduces weight and cost of the system. Moreover, a novel controller based on average power method is adopted for generation of compensation active filter current. In order to generate switching signals, multi-carrier Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition (APOD) — Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) schemes are used. The proposed CHB-MLC SAPF reduces the source current THD below 5%. The results are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and demonstrate the effective mitigation of current harmonics with APOD-PWM schemes. Opal-RT OP4500 real-time digital simulator is used to validate the proposed scheme under different steady state and transient conditions.

This paper focuses on a four-wire shunt active power filter (APF) control scheme proposed to improve the performance of the APF. This filter is used to compensate harmonic distortion in three-phase four-wire systems. Several harmonic suppression techniques have been widely proposed and applied to minimize harmonic effects. The proposed control scheme can compensate harmonics and reactive power of the nonlinear loads simultaneously. This approach is compared to the conventional shunt APF reference compensation strategy. The developed algorithm is validated by simulation tests using MATLAB Simulink. The obtained results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and confirmed the theoretical developments for balanced and unbalanced nonlinear loads.
