In this article, a comparison of innovative multilevel inverter topology with standard topologies has been conducted. The proposed single phase five level inverter topology has been used for induction heating system. This suggested design generates five voltage levels with a fewer number of power switches. This reduction in number of switches decreases the switching losses and the number of driving circuits and reduce the complexity of control circuit. It also reduces the cost and size for the filter used. Analysis and comparison has been done among the conventional topologies (neutral clamped and cascade H-bridge multilevel inverters) with the proposed inverter topology. The analysis includes the total harmonic distortion THD, efficiency and overall performance of the inverter systems. The simulation and analysis have been done using MATLAB/ SIMULINK. The results show good performance for the proposed topology in comparison with the conventional topologies.

Solar PV systems can be used for powering small microgrids in rural area of developing countries. Generally, a solar power microgrid consists of a PV array, an MPPT, a dc-dc converter and an inverter, particularly as the general loads are A.C in nature. In a PV system, reactive current, unbalancing in currents, and harmonics are generated due to the power electronics-based converters as well as nonlinear loads (computers induction motors etc). Thus, estimation of the harmonics levels measured by the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is an essential aspect of performance assessment of a solar powered microgrid. A major issue that needs to be examined is the impact of PV system control parameters on the THD. In this paper, we take up this assessment for a small PV based rural microgrid with varying levels of solar irradiance. A Simulink model has been developed for the study from which the THD at equilibrium conditions is estimated. This data is in turn used to design a generalized Linear Regression Model, which can be used to observe the sensitivity of three control variables on the magnitude of the THD. These variables are: Solar Irradiance levels, Power Factor (PF) of connected load magnitude of the connected load (in kVA) The results obtained show that the greatest sensitivity is obtained for load kVA variation.

Electric mobility is nowadays one of the more important trends regarding pollution reduction and global warming due to fuel consumption. Big efforts are done in order to develop efficient and reliable power electronic systems for electric vehicles. In two stage on board-battery chargers, one way of improving efficiency is by means of ensuring the DC-DC isolated converter always operates in the nominal input/output voltage ratio, that could be achieved with a variable DC-link operation. In this paper, a four-switch buck-boost based AC/DC converter is deeply analyzed in order to improve its dynamic performance, the power factor and the total harmonic distortion. The converter suffers from a non-minimum phase characteristic in different input–output transfer functions, which reduces the closed-loop bandwidth of the system. Therefore, after a deep converter analysis has been done, different solutions have been evaluated and tested. Finally, a control to different output transfer functions of the converter become minimum phase, which allows us to increase the system bandwidth and, consequently, high power factor, low harmonics distortion, single control structure and fast dynamics for wide output voltage range are achieved.

The current climatic scenario requires the use of innovative solutions to increase the production of electricity from renewable energy sources. Multilevel Power Inverters are a promising solution to improve the penetration of renewable energy sources into the electrical grid. Moreover, the performance of MPIs is a function of the modulation strategy employed and of its features (modulation index and switching frequency). This paper presents an extended and experimental analysis of three-phase five-level Cascaded H-Bridges Multilevel Inverter performance in terms of efficiency and harmonic content considering several MC PWM modulation strategies. In detail, the CHBMI performance is analyzed by varying the modulation index and the switching frequency. For control purposes, the NI System On Module sbRIO-9651 control board, a dedicated FPGA-based control board for power electronics and drive applications programmable in the LabVIEW environment, is used. The paper describes the modulation strategies implementation, the test bench set-up, and the experimental investigations carried out. The results obtained in terms of Total Harmonic Distorsion (THD) and efficiency are analyzed, compared, and discussed.

Abstract A regulated cascode current mirror (RGC) and its improved version with bulk driven quasi floating gate technique (BD-QFG) are presented in this paper. The proposed BD-QFG RGC current mirror (CM) is compared with the conventional (GD) RGC CM to show the performance improvement. The conventional and unconventional CM are implemented in Candace Virtuoso using 90 nm CMOS technology. For input current (Iin) varied from 0 to 200 μA and for 0.8 V supply voltage, the simulation results present that the proposed BD-QFG RGC CM has less variation in current transfer error (0.2%) as compared to the GD RGC CM (12%). The output voltage requirement for 200 µA input current is respectively 0.7 V and 0.17 V for the GD RGC CM and the BD-QFG RGC CM. The power consumption of the proposed circuit is 22.71 μW which is 0.15 μW higher than the GD RGC (22.56 μW). The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the proposed circuit is 0.4% which is 1.1% less than the conventional circuit (1.5%). All these improvements in the proposed BD-QFG RGC CM are attained at a cost of 0.05 GHz reduction in frequency (2.31 GHz). The minimum supply voltage of BD-QFG RGC CM and GD RGC CM is 0.4 V and

With the recent proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs), maintaining power quality within acceptable limits in future distribution grids will become a challenging task. A specific concern is the spread of Supraharmonics in the range from 2 to 150 kHz, generated by modern power electronic devices. In this paper, the long term Supraharmonic distortion from three differently sized electric vehicle charging infrastructures is analyzed in frequency and time domain. At the monitored sites several interruptions of EV charging processes were observed due to poor power quality. It was found that vehicles disconnect when exposed to high levels of harmonic distortion. Moreover, the impact of the charging EVs on the Supraharmonic distortion and the interaction with the background distortion for the individual sites is discussed. Results show that a general increase in Supraharmonics emission can be expected due to the rising number of EVs. However, measurements also indicate that damping effects can occur for certain load configurations.

The smart transformer has been widely applied for the integration of renewables and loads. For the smart transformer application, the voltage control of low-voltage inverter is important for feeding the load. In this paper, a multi-objective optimization control design approach which comprehensively considers all aspects of indexes, such as linear quadratic (LQ) index, H∞ norm, and closed-loop poles placement, is proposed based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) solution. The proposed approach is able to alleviate the weight of the designer from the tedious design process of the multiple resonant controllers and the selection of the weighting matrix for the LQ control. Besides that, some excellent performances such as fast recovering time, low total harmonic distortion (THD) and high robustness are achieved by the proposed approach. The THD are 0.5% and 1.7% for linear and non-linear loads, respectively. The voltage drop for linear load step is reduced to 10 V. The proposed approach is applied to a 5 kVA three-phase inverter to yield an optimal control law. Results from the simulation and experiment presented herein will illustrate and validate the proposed approach.

This paper presents a method to extend the DC bus utilization on an induction motor (IM) by using a combination of Space-Vector Modulated Direct Torque Control (DTC–SVM) and conventional DTC. The scheme proposed in this paper exploits the advantages of both control methods. During the linear region, it allows for a low torque ripple and low current harmonic distortion (THD). During the overmodulation region, it allows for the fastest torque response up to the six-step operation region. In both regions, there is complete independence of the motor parameters. The paper describes a way to provide a smooth transition between the two control schemes. Non-linearities affect the stator flux angle estimation, which leads to the inability to decouple torque and flux. To overcome this problem, a novel PI-based control scheme as well as a simplification on the decoupling terms’ calculation are proposed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.
