The signature recognition is a difficult process as it requires several phases. A failure in a phase will significantly reduce the recognition accuracy. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) believed to be used to assist in the recognition or classification of the signature. In this study, the ANN algorithm used is Back Propagation. A mechanism to adaptively adjust the learning rate is developed to improve the system accuracy. The purpose of this study is to conduct the recognition of a number of signatures so that can be known whether the recognition which is done by using the Back Propagation is appropriate or not. The testing results performed by using learning rate of 0.64, the number of iterations is 100, and produces an accuracy value of 63%.

This paper presents comparative investigation on the classification of rubber latex clone series using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based on optical sensing technique. Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM) introduced the rubber breeding program known as RRIM clone series in order to increase the yield of latex production and the rubber wood to meet the requirement for export and import in upstream sector. Due to the large numbers of clones launched with different characteristics and properties, this bring difficulty such as lack of information regarding to the identification on cloning. Therefore, this work developed an optical based sensing system for classification of the selected RRIM 2000 and 3000 clone series based. Near Infrared Sensors was used as sensing element in order to measure the latex from the top surface and photodiode which received the reflected light from the sensor via reflectance index in term of voltage. The raw obtained data was then used as input parameter for ANN tool which supervised by scaled gradient back propagation and the performance was optimized at 25 neurons with 74.4% accuracy. By using ANN the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for each clones are measured.  RRIM 3001 shows the highest sensitivity, 94.1% while RRIM 2002 shows the highest specificity of 99.1% accuracy, 93.1%. As a result, the system could differentiate RRIM 2002 more compare to other clones.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce a novel respiration pattern-based biometric prediction system (BPS) by using artificial neural network (ANN). Design/methodology/approach Respiration patterns were obtained using a knitted piezoresistive smart chest band. The ANN model was implemented by using four hidden layers to help achieve the best complexity to produce an adequate fit for the data. Not only did this study give a detailed distribution of an ANN model construction including the scheme of parameters and network layers, ablation of the architecture and the derivation of back-propagation during the iterations but also engaged a step-based decay to systematically drop the learning rate after specific epochs during training to minimize the loss and increase the model’s accuracy as well as to limit the risk of overfitting. Findings Findings establish the feasibility of using respiratory patterns for biometric identification. Experimental results show that, with a learning rate drop factor = 0.5, the network is able to continue to learn past epoch 40 until stagnation occurs which yielded a classification accuracy of 98 per cent. Out of 51,338 test set, the model achieved 51,557 correctly classified instances and 169 misclassified instances. Practical implications The findings provide an impetus for possible studies into the application of chest breathing sensors for human machine interfaces in the area of entertainment. Originality/value This is the first time respiratory patterns have been applied in biometric prediction system design.

This paper proposed a prediction approach for the performance of the mechanical draft wet cooling tower based on artificial neural network (ANN). The inlet water temperature, the ambient wet bulb temperature and the ratio of water to air mass flow rate in the cooling tower were selected as the input parameters of a four-layer back propagation neural network (BPNN) to predict the temperature of the water at the tower outlet. After the test of the available data set, the BPNN results in a correlation coefficient of 0.9 between the predicted and experimental values. Thus the prediction performance is good and such prediction approach proves to be feasible and effective.

In this study, three artificial neural network (ANN) models are developed with back propagation (BP) optimization algorithms to predict various lightning damage modes in carbon/epoxy laminates. The proposed ANN models use three input variables associated with lightning waveform parameters (i.e., the peak current amplitude, rising time, and decaying time) to predict fiber damage, matrix damage, and through-thickness damage in the composites. The data used for training and testing the networks was actual lightning damage data collected from peer-reviewed published literature. Various BP training algorithms and network architecture configurations (i.e., data splitting, the number of neurons in a hidden layer, and the number of hidden layers) have been tested to improve the performance of the neural networks. Among the various BP algorithms considered, the Bayesian regularization back propagation (BRBP) showed the overall best performance in lightning damage prediction. When using the BRBP algorithm, as expected, the greater the fraction of the collected data that is allocated to the training dataset, the better the network is trained. In addition, the optimal ANN architecture was found to have a single hidden layer with 20 neurons. The ANN models proposed in this work may prove useful in preliminary assessments of lightning damage and reduce the number of expensive experimental lightning tests.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) has been the leading cause of death worldwide over the past 10 years. Researchers have been using several data mining techniques to help healthcare professionals diagnose heart disease. The neural network (NN) can provide an excellent solution to identify and classify different diseases. The artificial neural network (ANN) methods play an essential role in recognizes diseases in the CAD. The authors proposed multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) among one hidden layer neuron (MLP) and four hidden layers neurons (P-MLP)-based highly accurate artificial neural network (ANN) method for the classification of the CAD dataset. Therefore, the ten-fold cross-validation (T-FCV) method, P-MLP algorithms, and base classifiers of MLP were employed. The P-MLP algorithm yielded very high accuracy (86.47% in CAD-56 and 98.35% in CAD-59 datasets) and F1-Score (90.36% in CAD-56 and 98.83% in CAD-59 datasets) rates, which have not been reported simultaneously in the MLP.

AbstractThe reproduction of meteorological waves utilizing physically based hydrodynamic models is very difficult in light of the fact that it requires enormous amounts of information, for example, hydrological and water-driven time arrangement limits, stream geometry, and balance coefficients. Accordingly, an artificial neural network (ANN) strategy utilizing a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is perceived as a viable option for modeling and forecasting the maximum and time variation of meteorological tsunamis in the Mekong Estuary in Vietnam. The parameters, including both the nearby climatic and breeze field factors, for finding the most extreme meteorological waves are first examined, depending on the preparation of the evolved neural systems. The time series for meteorological tsunamis are used for training and testing the models, and data for three cyclones are used for model prediction. This study finds that the proposed advanced ANN time series model is easy to utilize with display and prediction tools for simulating the time variation of meteorological tsunamis.
