Eryngium viviparum is an endemic plant of the Atlantic regions of Europe. Surveys carried out in recent years in the wetlands of northwest Spain have led to the identification of several previously undetected subpopulations of this species in inland areas with markedly Mediterranean bioclimatic characteristics that constitute the southern limit of this species. However, these populations overlap with the distribution of the Iberian endemic E. galioides, similar in size and morphology. We developed a biometric study on herbarium vouchers that has enabled us to identify a new subspecies, subspecies bariegoi, distributed in a limited geographical zone in Mediterranean areas of the northwest Iberian Peninsula.

A total of 281 specimens of freshwater armored ornamental fish species (Leporacanthicus galaxias, Lasiancistrus saetiger, Cochliodon sp., Hypostomus sp., Pseudacanthicus spinosus, Ancistrus sp. and Rineloricaria cf. lanceolata) were captured at the hydrological basin of Guamá River, Pará, Brazil. The infection by Trypanosoma spp. was inspected. The morphological and morphometric characterization of the parasites and the hematological parameters were determined. Leporacanthicus galaxias and Pseudacanthicus spinosus presented 100% infection prevalence, and the other species showed a variable prevalence of infection. The parasites showed clearly different morphotypes and dimensions, and probably belong to different species. The hematological response to the infection varied with the host. Cochliodon sp. showed no differences between infected and not infected fish. In other species several modifications on some hematological parameters were found, but apparently without causing disease. It is emphasized the possibility of introduction of the parasites in new environments due to the artificial movements of these ornamental fish.

Calcium tartrate finds various applications. In the present study, calcium tartrate nanoparticles were synthesized by wet chemical method using surfactant mediated approach. The powder XRD pattern revealed the typical broadening of peaks indicating the nanostructured nature. The average crystallite size was calculated by applying the Scherrer's formula to powder XRD pattern and was found in the range of 22.8–23.9 nm. The particle size and morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles was confirmed by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm the presence of various functional groups. From TGA, it was found that calcium tartrate nanoparticles remained stable up to 120°C and were having two water molecules associated with them. The results are compared with the bulk crystalline materials available in the literature.

Reicheiodes microphthalmus (Heyden, 1870) wird redescribiert.
