Novelties in Malagasy Euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae)

In this paper we clarify the identity and natural distribution of Euphorbia milii by defining an epitype for it, and elevate to specific rank infraspecific names published under E. milii and provide detailed synonymy for taxa reinstated at the specific rank such as Euphorbia splendens, Euphorbia bevilaniensis, Euphorbia hislopii. We publish novelties such as E. cylindroclada, Euphorbia imperatae (including Euphorbia milii forma lutea), Euphorbia pachyspina, Euphorbia tananarivae, and Euphorbia werneri.We also investigate the taxonomy and nomenclature of other Malagasy succulent Euphorbia and identify new synonyms for Euphorbia beharensis, Euphorbia berevoensis, Euphorbia delphinensis, Euphorbia mangokyensis, Euphorbia paulianii, and Euphorbia bosseri. We publish at a new rank E. begardii (basionym E. primulifolia var. begardii), E. crassicaulis (basionym E. francoisii var. crassicaulis, with a new synonym E. decaryi var. crassicaulis), and Euphorbia hardyi (basionym E. platyclada var. hardyi). We also clarify the typification of E. isalensis. lectotypify Euphorbia leandriana and, clarify its circumscription, with E. horombensis as a new synonym of this name.

Diurnal Lepidoptera tend to have colorful and conspicuous wing patterns, which is the reason the first classifications of day-flying moths and butterflies were based mainly on wing color and pattern characters. This is the case with the Neotropical Castniidae, which are usually large and colorful day-flying moths. One classification listed 134 species in 32 genera while an alternate classification recognized 81 species. In this paper we examine the taxonomic structure of the genus Hista Oiticica. It is the purpose of this paper to evaluate taxonomically useful characters besides wing pattern with the goal of classifying the taxa of Hista rather than classifying the variation of its wing pattern. In so doing, the results resolve the differences between the two proposed classifications of Hista. In addition, a lectotype is designated for Castnia boisduvalii Walker, 1854 (new synonym of Castnia fabricii Swainson, 1823) to ensure the stability of the name. Other new synonyms are proposed for C. fabricii (C. papagaya Westwood, 1877) and Castnia hegemon Kollar, 1839 (C. menetriesi Boisduval, [1875] and C. hegemon variegata Rothschild, 1919).

Fourteen species of Phaecasiophora Grote from the Chinese Mainland are treated, including five new species (P. supparallelica sp. n., P. levis sp. n., P. curvicosta sp. n., P. lushina sp. n., and P. similithaiensis sp. n.) and three new species records for China. Phaecasiophora leechi is transferred from subgenus Megasyca to subgenus Phaecasiophora, and a new synonym of it, viz. P. obligata Kawabe, is proposed. Photographs of the adults, genitalia of the new species, and the species with new synonyms are provided. A key to the species from the Chinese Mainland based on genitalia is given.

New lectotypifications and new synonyms are provided as a result of a systematic study of the genus Festuca from the Central Andes. In the Andes mountains of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, several species of Festuca are dominant components of the grasslands and high Andean steppes. Festuca circinata and F. dissitiflora occur in this area and were described based on morphological characters. Some authors have considered F. circinata as a valid species while others have treated it as a synonym of F. dissitiflora, together with F. dissitiflora var. loricata , F. dissitiflora var. villipalea, and F. erecta var. aristulata. In this study, a review of the taxonomy and nomenclature of F. castilloniana, F. circinata, and F. potosiana was performed, and their morphological and anatomical characters were compared with F. dissitiflora. Based on morphoanatomical and epidermal characters, this study contributes to the delimitation of F. circinata and F. dissitiflora. Nomenclatural notes and new anatomical and epidermal descriptions are included for these species. Differential characters between F. circinata and F. dissitiflora are discussed and F. circinata is restored as a valid species for Argentina. Festuca castilloniana and F. potosiana are synonymised under F. dissitiflora. Festuca dissitiflora var. loricata, F. dissitiflora var. villipalea, and F. erecta var. aristulata are excluded from the synonymy of F. dissitiflora and it is suggested that these names should be subordinate under F. fiebrigii. Festuca stuckertii is proposed as a new synonym of F. uninodis. Lectotypes are designated for the names F. argentinensis, F. dissitiflora, F. nemoralis and F. parodii, and second-step lectotypes are designated for the names F. circinata and F. ampliflora.

Based on re-collections at known sites, field observations, study of specimens and review of literature, taxonomic revisions of five Euonymus species from East and South Asia are presented, including three new synonyms of Euonymus laxiflorus Champion ex Bentham, a new synonym of Euonymus mengtzeanus (Loesener) Sprague, a new synonym of Euonymus gracillimus Hemsley, and supplemental descriptions of the floral features of Euonymus pittosporoides Cheng ex Ma and Euonymus ficoides Cheng ex Ma. Lectotypes are also designated for seven names wherein the holotype had not been designated in the original publication. Additionally, the conservation status of these species is reevaluated according to IUCN standards (version 3.1).

Augochlora is a genus of mainly tropical bees, with few representatives in both North and South American temperate areas. In this contribution we present a taxonomic review of the species with southernmost distribution. Only five species occur in central Argentina and Uruguay, between 30º and 40º south latitude: A. iphigenia Holmberg, A. amphitrite (Schrottky), A. nausicaa (Schrottky), A. phoemonoe (Schrottky) and A. daphnis Smith. The first four species are common elements in the bee assemblages of the area. The fifth species, from Montevideo, Uruguay, is known from the type specimen only. Re-descriptions of all species, as well as illustrations, distributional data, and taxonomic keys are presented. A lectotype is designated for Augochlora iphigenia Holmberg, 1886. Oxystoglossa semiramis Schrottky, 1911, and Halictus brochidens Vachal, 1911, are new synonyms of A. iphigenia Holmberg. Odontochlora thebe Schrottky, 1909, is a new synonym of Odontochlora amphitrite Schrottky, 1909.

All available type materials of the Indochinese genus Goliathopsis Janson, 1881 are determined, and lectotype designations are made for G. capreolus Gestro 1888, G. despectus (Westwood, 1873), G. esquiroli Pouillaude, 1913, and G. velutinus Pouillaude, 1913. The examination of type series revealed three synonyms: Goliathopsis camptotropus Yang, 1988 new synonym and G. polystricus Yang, 1988 new synonym are synonymized with G. esquiroli, and G. maolanus Yang, 1988 new synonym is regarded as a junior synonym of G. lameyi Fairmaire, 1893. Besides, G. cervus Janson, 1881 is proved to be a valid species. Diagnoses, key, and color illustrations are provided for all species. All known distribution records are mapped, and the location of “Tsékou” and “Oui-Sy” are presented and discussed.

The following nomenclatural changes in the Oriental Sticholotidini (Coccinellidae: Sticholotidinae) are proposed: Sticholotis quadrisignata rugicollis Korschefsky (1934) is elevated to a distinct species (status revised) and Sticholotis gomyi Chazeau (1974) is a new junior synonym of S. rugicollis (new synonym). The genus Neojauravia Gordon & Almeida (1991), described from Brazil, is a new junior synonym of Pharoscymnus Bedel (1906) and the type species, Neojauravia naeida Gordon & Almeida (1991), is a new junior synonym of Pharoscymnus flexibilis (Mulsant, 1853) (new synonyms).

The Sino-Indian species of the genus Cladopelma Kieffer are reviewed and one new species from China, C. costum sp. n., is described and illustrated as male. The males of C. edwardsi (Kruseman) and C. virescens (Meigen) from China are re-examined. Type material of Cryptotendipes inawaabeus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki, Harnischia daitoheia Sasa et Suzuki, H. ginzandeeus Sasa et Suzuki, H. inadeeus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki, H. sibacedea Sasa, Sumita et Suzuki, H. simantocedea Sasa, Suzuki et Sakai from Japan and Cladopelma indicum Bhattacharyay, Duta et Chaudhuri from India are reexamined, and all regarded as new synonyms of C. edwardsi. Cladopelma onogawaprima Sasa is regarded as a new synonym of C. hibaraprima Sasa and the species is transferred to Cryptotendipes as a new combination. Cladopelma kamalanagari Maheshwari et Agarwal from India is transferred to Paracladopelma as a new combination. A key to all known males of Cladopelma is provided.

AbstractOxycerina gen.n. (Stratiomyidae: Stratiomyinae), including three new species, O. hauseri sp.n., O. merzi sp.n. and O. sabaha sp.n., is described from the Oriental Region and compared with related genera of Stratiomyinae and Raphiocerinae. The monotypic genus Scapanocnema Enderlein, 1914 is considered to be a synonym of Odontomyia Meigen, 1803; S. spathulipes Enderlein, 1914 and O. latitibia Rozkošný & Kovac, 1994 are considered to be new synonyms of O. luteiceps de Meijere, 1911. Cyrtopus Bigot, 1883, is also proposed as a synonym of Odontomyia, resulting in new or resurrected combinations for the species O. fastuosa (Bigot, 1883), O. magnifica Lachaise & Lindner, 1973, and O. smaragdifera (Lindner, 1938). Timorimyia Frey, 1934 is proposed as a new synonym of Acanthasargus White, 1914, resulting in A. bidentatus (Frey, 1934), comb.n. A key to the genera of the Oriental Stratiomyinae and Raphiocerinae is presented.

Abstract The generic synonyms of Taumacera Thunberg, 1814 are revised. Acroxena Baly, 1879; Kinabalua Mohamedsaid, 1997; Neochrolea Jacoby, 1887; Paraenidea Laboissière, 1933 and Xenarthra Baly, 1861 are proposed as new synonyms of Taumacera. Luperomorphella Chûjô, 1964 is removed from the synonymy with Taumacera and proposed as a new synonym of Cerophysa Chevrolat, 1836. Platyxantha quadraticollis Jacoby, 1896 is confirmed as a synonym of Theopella bodjoensis (Duvivier, 1885). The name Hyphaenia tibialis Medvedev & Romantsov, 2013 is fixed by the act of the first reviewer principle. Based on the structure of antennae, seven species-groups are recognized (the antennata-group, the cervicornis-group, the deusta-group, the insignis-group, the nasuta-group, the nigricornis-group, and the viridis-group). Lectotypes are designated for Platyxantha balyi Jacoby, 1895 and Dorydea indica Jacoby, 1889, which is important since each of their syntype series consists of two different species
