Costus chinensis and C. oblongus (Costaceae) has been previously placed in synonymy under C. lacerus. Our critical examination of herbarium specimens including type material demonstrates that they are morphologically distinct from each other. Therefore, the independent specific status of C. chinensis and C. oblongus is reinstated. According to recent studies, Costus chinensis as well as other two Chinese species, C. oblongus and C. viridis, should be transferred to Hellenia. Thus, a new name for C. chinensis, and two new combinations are proposed. A detailed description of C. chinensis along with a distribution map of three allied species is also provided.

Alpinia laosensis was previously placed in synonymy under A. conchigera. However, a critical examination of herbarium specimens (including type material) and living plants of A. laosensis and A. conchigera reveals that they are two separate species. Alpinia laosensis can be distinguished from A. conchigera by the shape of its fruits, shape and size of leaves and colour of labellum. We therefore reinstate A. laosensis as an independent species. A detailed description of A. laosensis together with a distribution map of both species are provided.

This paper presents a re-evaluation of the taxonomic relationships of Silene sericea var. balearica based on morphological features Critical examination of herbarium specimens (including type material) and living plants has shown that S. sericea var. balearica should be recognized at species level. Therefore, the new name, Silene migjornensis, is proposed to designate the endemic species growing on maritime sands in southern Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). This taxon is described, illustrated and compared with its morphologically closest relatives from Silene sect. Dipterosperma.

Based on examination of herbarium specimens (including type material), we demonstrate that Delphinium breviscaposum and D. filibracteolum (Ranunculaceae), both described recently from northwestern Yunnan in China, are conspecific with D. ceratophorum and D. bulleyanum, respectively, two species very common in northwestern Yunnan. We therefore synonymize D. breviscaposum and D. filibracteolum herein. Second step lectotypifications are proposed for both D. bulleyanum and D. ceratophorum.

Delphinium ellipticovatum, D. tianshanicum and D. winklerianum (Ranunculaceae) share some important characters in leaf division, pedicel pubescence and the shape of the spur of upper sepals. They have been considered to be different mainly in the characters of bracteoles (shape, size, indumentum, and position on pedicels). Our critical observations on herbarium specimens (including type material) and living plants, together with numerical analyses of the bracteole characters within and between populations of the species in question, have demonstrated that, in addition to D. kuanii previously already synonymized with D. winklerianum, both D. ellipticovatum and D. tianshanicum are also indistinguishable from D. winklerianum. We therefore further place D. ellipticovatum and D. tianshanicum also in synonymy with D. winklerianum.

Critical examination of herbarium specimens (including type material) of Cremanthodium ellisii var. roseum (Asteraceae, Senecioneae) has shown that the variety should be transferred to C. brunneopilosum. We therefore propose a new combination, C. brunneopilosum var. roseum.

Thalictrum semiscandens (Ranunculaceae) was described from Lushui County in northwestern Yunnan, China and has been almost totally overlooked since its publication. Based on a critical examination on herbarium specimens (including type material), we demonstrate that it is conspecific with T. trichopus, a species widely distributed in southwestern China (Sichuan and Yunnan). We therefore reduce T. semiscandens to the synonymy of T. trichopus herein. Lectotypification is proposed for T. trichopus.

Based on critical examination of herbarium specimens (including type material), we demonstrate that Clematis hainanensis (Ranunculaceae), described from Hainan in southern China, is not essentially different from C. leschenaultiana, a species widely distributed in China (Chongqing, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan), and also in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. We therefore place C. hainanensis in synonymy with C. leschenaultiana herein. Lectotypification is proposed for C. leschenaultiana var. denticulata, which was described also from Hainan and treated as a synonym of C. leschenaultiana. The placement of the name C. splendens is briefly discussed.

Based on observations on living plants in the field, together with examination of herbarium specimens (including type material), we demonstrate that Delphinium iliense (Ranunculaceae) is highly variable in the indumentum of peduncles, pedicels, bracteoles, sepals and carpels and also in the shape of bracteoles and their position on pedicels. We therefore redefine this species and, in addition to accepting some previous synonyms in this species, such as D. longiciliatum and D. turkestanicum, we further reduce D. iliense var. angustatum and D. naviculare to its synonymy. We also propose lectotypification for D. iliense var. angustatum and D. turkestanicum.

Based on examination of herbarium specimens (including type material), we found that Delphinium calthifolium (Ranunculaceae), described from northern Sichuan in China, is conspecific with D. sinovitifolium, a species known only from its type material and misunderstood for a long time. We therefore place D. calthifolium in synonymy with D. sinovitifolium herein.

The systematics of three species of Miconia sect. Sagraea from the Greater Antilles, which also occur in the Lesser Antilles and/or continental regions, is investigated. These taxa, representing lineages of likely independent dispersal into the Greater Antilles, are here taxonomically revised, including for each a description, nomenclatural information (including a new name, Miconia sciaphila, and two new combinations, M. berteroi and M. septuplinervia), specimen citations, and an eco-geographical characterization. These species are compared with members of two species-rich clades of sect. Sagraea of independent diversification in the Greater Antilles: the Clidemia oligantha/C. leucandra complex (comprising seven species) and the Brevicyma clade (29 species). A key to the three species, distinguishing among them and separating them from the two species-rich Greater Antillean clades is provided.
