Stropharia populicola sp. nov., found during autumn under Populus spp. in Shanxi Province of North China, is described and illustrated. Stropharia populicola is similar and closely related to S. jilinensis and S. scabella but can be distinguished from the latter two species by the acanthocytes commonly present in the hymenium. Phylogenetic analysis supports its taxonomic position in the genus Stropharia.

Three new species of Tricholomopsis were described and illustrated based on collections from Shanxi Province in North China. Tricholomopsis galeata sp. nov. is closely related to T. pteridiicola but distinguished from the latter by its large pileus with red to purple reddish fibrous scales and the absence of pleurocystidia. Tricholomopsis pallidolutea sp. nov. is similar to T. sulfureoides and T. flavescens in macromorphology but is differentiated from T. sulfureoides by its dark orange fibrous scales on the pileal surface and narrow basidiospores (avQ = 1.77 ± 0.33), and from T. flavescens by its abundant pleurocystidia. Tricholomopsis mitirubicunda sp. nov. is morphologically similar to T. rutilans but is distinguished from the latter by its abundant pleurocystidia. Phylogenetic analysis supported the taxonomic position of the three new species in the genus Tricholomopsis.

The genus Protubera includes gasteroid species. Its members are globally distributed in tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas, and presently, six species are recognized. In this paper, Protubera beijingensis from North China is described as a new species. Its morphological description and illustration are provided in detail and compared with morphologically similar species. A multigene phylogenetic analysis based on nLSU, atp6, and rpb2 sequences of the genus Protubera also identifies this organism as a new species within Protubera.

The Order Asaphida was grouped by the presence of a ventral median suture and a globular protaspis. The Superfamily Trinucleoidea has been assigned to the Order Asaphida, based on the recognition of a globular protaspis in the Ordovician representatives of the group, and the presence of a ventral median suture in the middle Cambrian genusLiostracinawhich has been regarded as a primitive sister-group to the post-Cambrian trinucleoideans. Recent studies demonstrate that the ventral median suture and the globular protaspis could have evolved multiple times in the trilobite evolutionary history, casting doubt on the traditional concept of the Order Asaphida. Inclusion of the Trinucleoidea into the Order Asaphida, therefore, has to be tested. It has recently been revealed thatLiostracina simesiJago and Cooper, 2005 did not possess a ventral median suture, implying that there could have been variable types of ventral suture within the genusLiostracina. Here we report the ontogeny ofLiostracina tangwangzhaiensisn. sp. from the Cambrian Series 3 (middle Cambrian) strata of Shandong Province of North China. The material for this study includes protaspides, which are of flat, benthic morphology, contrasting to the globular protaspid morphology of the Ordovician trinucleoideans. The benthic protaspid morphology ofL. tangwangzhaiensisindicates an independent evolution of the globular protaspis within the Superfamily Trinucleoidea. Together with the variable types of ventral suture within the genusLiostracina, the benthic protaspid morphology ofLiostracinaleads us to propose that the Superfamily Trinucleoidea be excluded from the Order Asaphida.

Clavariadelphus griseoclavus sp. nov. is described and illustrated from North China. Morphologically, the new species is distinguished from other Clavariadelphus species by its grey to greyish basidiomata. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences is provided and supports the establishment of the new species.

A new species, Phylloporia lespedezae, is described from Shanxi Province on the basis of morphological, ecological characters and molecular evidence. It is characterized by having an annual, pileate basidiocarps with wavy edge, duplex context separated by a black line, a monomitic hyphal system with simple septate generative hyphae, the presence of fusoid cystidioles, yellowish, broadly ellipsoid, thick-walled basidiospores, and growing on Lespedeza (Fabaceae) only. Phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (nLSU) strongly support P. lespedezae as a distinct species within the genus of Phylloporia. Detailed description with illustration is provided for the new species and its relationships with similar species are discussed. In addition, a key to all 41 species of Phylloporia is provided.

In the present study, a new species Codonopsis gongshanica is described. This species is endemic to Gaoligong Mountains of NW Yunnan. Codonopsis gongshanica is similar to Codonopsis bhutanica and Codonopsis subsimplex in morphology, but it can be separated from these species by its simple stem, sub-rosulate leaves, short petiole, solitary flower, and diagnostically dark purple ring just below the corolla throat. Our molecular phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast DNA fragments (atpB, matK, rbcL, petD with petB-petD, and psbA-trnH) shows that the new species is well recognized in our molecular tree, with its taxonomic position revealed.

The morphological characterization and phylogenetic analysis based on molecular methods were executed on the freshwater Hildenbrandia specimens collected in this study. The cell size and filament height of the specimen collected from Pipa Lake, Japan were larger than the widely recognized species Hildenbrandia angolensis and Hildenbrandia rivularis, whereas overlapped with Hildenbrandia jigongshanensis. Based on molecular evidences of rbcL phylogenetic analysis and comparison of ITS1 secondary structure, specimen collected from Shiga Prefecture, Japan was proposed as a new species Hildenbrandia japananense. It brings the freshwater Hildenbrandia species in Japan to two. The specimens collected from Niangziguan, Shanxi province, China represent two new records of H. jigongshanensis. It enriches the species diversity of genus Hildenbrandia and increases the distribution diversity of this freshwater red algal taxon.

A new species of freshwater red alga, Sheathia matouensis, is described and illustrated based on material collected in spring water from the Hongdong region of Shanxi province, China. Phylogenetic analysis of sequence data from the rbcL and psbA indicated the separation between S. matouensis and the other species of genus Sheathia. Additionally, from a morphological point of view, S. matouensis differs from other species of the genus Sheathia by the smaller whorls and carpogonium. Therefore, the results based on both morphological observation and molecular evidences facilitated the proposal of this new species - S. matouensis. It represents another species in the freshwater red algal diversity in China and the description of this new species provides more molecular data for phylogenetic analysis of genus Sheathia.

Abstract Culex longitubus Somboon, Namgay & Harbach is described as a new species of the Mimeticus Subgroup of the subgenus Culex. The larva is most similar to the larva of Cx. tianpingensis Chen from China, but is distinguished by the length of the siphon and the anal papillae, the form of the comb scales and pecten spines, and the development of setae 7-P, 13-T, 1-X, and 4-X. The adults have wing markings and male genitalia similar to those of species of the Mimeticus Complex. Phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences revealed that the new species is closely related to Cx. murrelli Lien of the Mimulus Complex. The immature stages of the new species were found in stagnant pools and marshes at high altitudes in several districts of Bhutan.

Abstract The systematics and taxonomy of the broadly distributed bats of the genus Cynomops has changed considerably in the last few years. Among the major changes, Cynomops abrasus was split into two species of large-bodied forms (Cynomops mastivus and C. abrasus) distributed east of the Andes. However, large Colombian specimens identified as C. abrasus from the western side of the Andes had yet to be included in any revisionary work. Phylogenetic analysis performed in this study, using mtDNA sequences (Cytochrome-b), revealed that these Colombian individuals are more closely related to Cynomops greenhalli. Morphological and molecular data allowed us to recognize populations from western Colombia, western Ecuador and northwestern Peru, as members of a new species of Cynomops. Characters that allow for its differentiation from C. greenhalli include a larger forearm, paler but more uniform ventral pelage, more globular braincase, and well-developed zygomatic processes of the maxilla (almost reaching the postorbital constriction). This study serves as another example of the importance of including multiple lines of evidence in the recognition of a new species. Given its rarity and the advanced transformation of its habitat, this new species is particularly important from a conservation perspective.
