A taxonomic review of the genus Azteca (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Costa Rica and a global revision of the aurita group

The genus Azteca is endemic to the American tropics, where they are abundant arboreal ants. The taxonomy and natural history of the Costa Rican fauna is reviewed, and the A. aurita group is recognized and revised globally. The following synonymies are proposed: A. laticeps Forel under A. chartifex Forel; A. championi Forel, A. eiseni Pergande, A. raptrix Forel, A. ursina Forel, and A. xysticola Forel under A. forelii Emery; A. rossi and A. surubrensis Forel under A. gnava Forel; A. major Forel under A. instabilis (F. Smith); A. prorsa Wheeler under A. longiceps Emery; A. patruelis Forel under A. pittieri Forel; A. nigriventris Forel and A. rectinota Forel under A. velox Forel; A. silvae Forel under A. aurita Emery; A. pruinosa Mann under A. lallemandi Forel; A. lacrymosa Forel under A. pilosula Forel; A. fiebrigi Forel, A. clariceps Santschi, and A. pallida Stitz under A. schimperi Emery; A. columbica Forel under A. jelskii Emery; A. mexicana Emery under A. sericea (Mayr). Azteca velox nigra Forel is raised to species. Azteca aurita pilosula is removed from synonymy and raised to species. The following new species are described: A. sericeasur, A. flavigaster, A. oecocordia, A. nanogyna, and A. quadraticeps.

Euglyphis jessiehillae Montero, new species, is described from Costa Rican rain forest. Photographs of the adult, larva and cocoon, as well as male and female genitalia, are provided. In addition to its description and natural history, we include a checklist for the described members of the genus Euglyphis known from Costa Rica.

The taxonomy and natural history of the ant genus Crematogaster are reviewed for the Costa Rican fauna. Thirtyone species are known, and a key is provided for these and two additional species from adjacent regions of Panama. Species boundaries are evaluated over their entire range when possible. The taxonomic history of the genus is one of unbridled naming of new species and subspecies, with no synthetic works or keys. Major taxonomic changes are proposed, with the recognition of several polytypic species with very broad ranges and the synonymization of the many names associated with them. We describe the new species Entypus renata, sp. nov., from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and report on its host. We also provide the first host records for Ageniella (Priophanes) erythroptera (Banks), Entypus bituberculatus (Guérin-Méneville) and an undetermined species of Poecilopompilus Ashmead. In addition, we report behavioral aspects for these species, including a new ethological sequence for Poecilopompilus.

AbstractOmiodes Guenée is redescribed based on all New World species, including the type species O. humeralis Guenée. Four new species from Costa Rica, O. janzeni sp. n., O. hallwachsae sp. n., O. sirena sp. n., O. ochracea sp. n., are described. Ten new synonymies are established : Phostria disciiridescens Hampson is =O. croeceiceps (Walker), Phostria cayennalis Schaus is =O. grandis (Druce), Omiodes ochrosoma Felder & Rogenhofer and Phryganodes gazalis Schaus are =O. pandaralis (Walker), Nacoleia lenticurvalis Hampson, Phryganodes anchoritalis Dyar, and Phostria duplicata Kaye are =O. confusalis (Dognin), O. cervinalis Amsel is =O. martvralis (Lederer), Nacoleia indicata ab. pigralis Dognin and Botis fortificalis Möschler are =O. metricalis (Möschler). One new combination is recognized: O. pandaralis (Walker) was transferred from Coelorhynchidia Hampson. A key and an updated checklist to the neotropical Omiodes species is provided, including O. indicata (Fabricius), a worldwide pest. Ten species that do not belong in Omiodes are retained until appropriate generic placements are identified.

AbstractA new species of tyrant flycatcher (Suiriri islerorum) is described from the cerrado region of Brazil and adjacent eastern Bolivia. The species previously had been confused with Suiriri suiriri affinis, with which it is syntopic at multiple sites. The new species was first identified by voice. Although cryptically similar to S. s. affinis in many respects, the new species is readily identified by all vocalizations, bill size, color pattern of the tail, and shape of the central rectrices. Most distinctive are the male–female duets, which are accompanied by dramatic wing-lifting displays not performed by any congeners. Reciprocal playback experiments of tape-recorded vocalizations demonstrated that the new species and S. s. affinis do not respond to one another's vocalizations. We provide information on the natural history of the new flycatcher, along with spectrograms of its various vocalizations. We also provide vocal analysis of all other named taxa in Suiriri, and discuss the various intrageneric relationships. In particular, S. s. affinis and S. s. bahiae, although distinct morphologically, are vocally and behaviorally similar, and respond to one another's vocalizations in playback experiments.

Twenty-five new species of neotropical Limacodidae, primarily from Central America, are described. The majority of these species (n=15) are from Parasa and Natada generic complexes, both presently known to contain only spiny caterpillars. In the Parasa complex, they include: Parasa figueresi, new species, Parasa joanae, new species, Parasa sandrae, new species, Parasa shirleyae, new species, Euclea mesoamericana, new species, Euclea zurquicola, new species, Euclea microcippus, new species, Euclea costaricana, new species, Euclea gajentaani, new species, Euclea josepsi, new species, Talima beckeri, new species, Talima weissi, new species, and Talima erojasi, new species. In the Natada complex, two new taxa are Natada delgadoi, new species, and Natada varablancana, new species. In a generic complex with hairy caterpillars, the Phobetron complex, six new taxa are: Phobetron guzmanae, new species, Isochaetes dwagsi, new species, Isochaetes kenjii, new species, Isochaetes heevansi, new species, Isochaetes tapantiensis, new species, and Vipsophobetron davisi, new species. In the Prolimacodes and Perola complexes, caterpillars are known to be smooth. New species in the Prolimacodes complex are Prolimacodes montanus, new species, and Dichromapteryx saborioi, new species, while the Perola complex includes Perola aenea, new species, and Epiperola browni, new species. Euclea microcippus, Parasa sandrae and Vipsophobetron davisi are the smallest species known to occur in their genera. Euclea mesoamericana and Parasa figueresi are relatively common in collections but have been mistakenly grouped with Euclea cippus (Cramer) and Parasa schausi Dyar, respectively. Each was reported from both Central and South America, but is now considered to be limited to South America. Talima weissi is closely related to the Mexican species T. assimilis (Dyar), sharing both a detachable clump of hairs on 8 th abdominal segment in males and large ductus seminalis, which hold the hairs, in females. Larval descriptions or hostplants are presented for P. sandrae, P. joanae, E. mesoamericana, E. gajentaani, T. beckeri, T. weissi, I. dwagsi, I. kenjii, I. heevansi, and V. davisi. Euclea zurquicola, E. josepsi, T. erojasi, N. delgadoi, N. varablancana, P. guzmanae, I. tapantiensis, and E. browni are known from only one locality, each in Costa Rica, while the last four are known only from unique specimens.

The genus Oligoxystre Vellard 1924 is revised. Pseudoligoxystre Vol 2001 is synonymized with Oligoxystre and its typespecies, P. bolivianum Vol 2001, is considered valid. The type-specimen of Oligoxystre auratum Vellard 1924, type-species by original designation, is considered lost. No additional material matching the original description was found and therefore the species is diagnosed from the original description. Four new species, all from Brazil, are also described: O. caatinga, O. dominguense, O. tucuruiense, and O. rufoniger. Data on natural history of O. bolivianum from field and captivity observations are presented. The genus Cenobiopelma Mello-Leitão & Arlé 1934 ) is based upon Cenobiopelma mimeticum Mello-Leitão & Arlé 1934 for which no type was ever designated and hence both are considered nomina nuda.

We provide a taxonomic review of the “browni group”, a cloud forest lineage of the diverse lycaenid butterfly genus Penaincisalia, distributed from Costa Rica to northern Argentina. The group is characterized on the basis of five characters provided by wing shape, forewing androconia and genital structures. We distinguish eight species in the group: P. browni (Johnson, 1992), P. caeruleonota Hall & Willmott, 2005; P. cuiva Prieto & Rodriguez, 2007; P. magnifica (Johnson, 1992), P. purpurea (Johnson, 1992), P. saraha (Johnson, 1992), P. vittata (Johnson, 1992) and P. regala (Le Crom & Johnson, 1997). We confirm their status as presented in the recent Checklist of Neotropical Butterflies (Robbins, 2004), except for P. regala which is reinstated to species status from synonymy. The taxonomic history of each species with references to type material is provided. Every species is diagnosed, male and female phenotypes are associated, described and data on their distribution and biology are given. If relevant the variability of the species is discussed.

A brief review of the history of the taxonomic treatment of the genus Philenis Champion is presented and characters are discussed. Philenisflavipes Champion and P.fuscofemorata Champion, and 11 new species are described, including the first records from South America: P.anzaldoinewspecies (Costa Rica, Panamá), P.costaricensisnew species (Costa Rica), P.laselvaensisnew species (Costa Rica), P.auritibiaenew species (Costa Rica), P.brunneanew species (Costa Rica, Panamá), P.muscamimeticanewspecies (Panamá), P.chiriquiensisnew species (Panamá), P.guyanensisnew species (French Guiana), P.ferrugineanew species (Ecuador), P.howdeninew species (Ecuador), and P.kuschelinewspecies (Colombia, Ecuador). A key is provided to separate the species, and an unusual type of “multifurcate” scale is reported for some species. Two species have been associated with plants of the family Araceae. Most collections of this genus by the Arthropods of La Selva (ALAS) biodiversity project in Costa Rica were made by passive trapping methods during the dry season and at lower to middle elevations along an altitudinal transect on the slopes of Volcan Barva. The coloration of some species in the genus is hypothesized to mimic social Hymenoptera or flies.
