A new genus and six new species of the tropical Camptotypus genus-group (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae; Pimplinae) from northern South America

The new northern South American genus Amazopimpla gen.n. and six new species (Amazopimpla errabunda sp.n. from Peru; Amazopimpla farallonensis sp.n. from Colombia; Amazopimpla guayanaensis sp.n. from Guayana; Amazopimpla lutea sp.n. from Colombia; Amazopimpla matogrossoensis sp.n. from Brazil and Amazopimpla taunoi sp.n. from Colombia and Peru) are described. An identification key and illustrations are provided as well as a short discussion of the species richness and distribution area of the genus.

Background and aims – As “islands in the sky” of northern South America, the isolated ecosystems of the Pantepui province include a distinct flora with high levels of endemism and which are ancestral areas for many angiosperm lineages. About one fifth of Pantepui angiosperm species are distributed in Poales, a highly diverse angiosperm order.Methods – Recent field trips were carried out on two Brazilian tepuis, by foot and helicopter. Herbarium collections were consulted and compared with the proposed new species. Key results – Four new species of Poales, three Navia Schult. & Schult.f. (Bromeliaceae) and one Paepalanthus Mart. (Eriocaulaceae) were found. Descriptions, illustrations, and distribution maps of the new species, as well as an identification key to Brazilian Navia species, are provided.

The genus Gastrodynerus is here revised based on external morphology and male genitalia. Bohart (1984) proposed Gastrodynerus as a new genus with three species: G. vanduzeei (Bohart 1948), G. searsi Bohart, 1984, and G. stangei Bohart, 1984. Later, Rodriguez-Palafox (1996) added G. tacubayae (de Saussure, 1857). Herein, we describe four new species from Central America and South America: G. guatemalensis sp. nov.; G. barretti sp. nov.; G. aimara sp. nov. and G. yungaensis sp. nov. After this taxonomic revision, the Gastrodynerus includes eight species widely distributed in the New World. An identification key is provided for all of the species.

The tabanid tribe Diachlorini (Diptera) is the most genus-rich tribe in the Tabanidae; the tribe is cosmopolitan, but the greatest species richness and morphological diversity are found in the Australasian and Neotropical Regions. A new arrangement for the species of Acellomyia González is given; Acellomyia lauta (Hine) is transferred to a new genus, Montismyia gen.n., based on its morphological differences from Acellomyia and geographical distribution. The morphological differences between Acellomyia and Montismyia gen. n. are discussed. Two new species, Acellomyia casablanca sp.n. and Acellomyia puyehue sp.n., are described from specimens collected in southern Chile. Comparison of the morphology of Acellomyia paulseni mapuche (Coscarón & Philip) stat.nov. indicate that they should be elevated to species rank. A key to species of Acellomyia is provided and diagnostic characters are illustrated.

The genus Megarthrus Curtis 1829 with about 139 species described around the world, is the largest of the subfamily Proteininae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) (Cuccodoro 2011). Megarthrus is distributed worldwide (Cuccodoro 1999) but it is apparently more diverse in the Holartic region (Navarrete-Heredia et al. 2002). However, the South American fauna is underestimated because many of the collected specimens are not yet described (Cuccodoro 2011). Newton et al. (2005) cited the genus as probable in Colombia because some species are known from Central America and northern South America, but until now, no species has been published from Colombia. Therefore, M. andinus sp. nov. represents the first record of the genus and subfamily for this country.

AbstractElectroborus brighti, new genus, new species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is described based on two specimens from Dominican amber, which represents the first Hylesinini found in Dominican amber. A phylogenetic analysis of 24 Hylesinini species and a Strombophorus Hagedorn species based on morphological characters suggests E. brighti is not related to the Neotropical genus Phloeoborus Erichson, but shares a close affinity to African Hylesinini genera. The discovery of this new genus adds to the evidence that tropical South America and Africa shared similar faunas throughout evolutionary history. Although many Old World taxa have become extinct in the New World, the existence of E. brighti among Recent faunas is a possibility, given that the South American and African scolytine faunas are relatively poorly studied.

Taxonomic studies of Tephrosia Pers. (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae, Millettieae) in South America have highlighted the need to resolve some nomenclatural issues. Five new synonyms are proposed and a new species is described. Nine lectotypes of accepted names and synonyms, and one neotype, are here designated. An identification key to the taxa occurring in South America is also presented.

Chalcis Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) currently includes over 50 described species, most of them from temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Prior to the present study, only Chalcis pilicauda (Cameron) had been recorded from South America. The examination of specimens collected in Argentina, southern Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay allowed the description of six new species: C. boi Saguiah & Tavares sp. nov., C. danunciae Saguiah & Tavares sp. nov., C. intervalensis Saguiah & Tavares sp. nov., C. periotoi Saguiah & Tavares sp. nov., C. quechua Saguiah & Tavares sp. nov., and C. winstonae Saguiah & Tavares sp. nov. Chalcis pilicauda is redescribed, and C. ornatifrons (Cameron) stat. rev. is removed from synonym under C. pilicauda and re-established. An identification key for South American species is presented.

The new species Carex roalsoniana (Cyperaceae) from Ecuador and Peru (northern South America) is here described and illustrated. It is related to C. subandrogyna, a species that has been placed in section Schiedeanae. An additional incertae sedis species, Carex lepida from Ecuador, may also be related to them. Section Schiedanae is a morphologically well-defined group previously known from southern North America (southern USA and Mexico), and southern South America (northern Argentina and southern Bolivia). The new species presents very clear-cut characters that distinguish it from all the other members of the section. Specifically, C. roalsoniana and C. subandrogyna differ in utricle morphology (3.6–4.1 mm long, with a beak 0.5–1.2 mm in C. roalsoniana vs. 2.4–2.9 mm long, with a beak up to 0.3 mm long or beakless in C. subandrogyna) and leaves (up to 3–4 mm wide, stiff, in C. roalsoniana vs. up to 5.6–7.5 mm wide, very soft in C. subandrogyna). Carex lepida is easily distinguished from C. roalsoniana and C. subandrogyna because its habit (rhizomes elongated vs. rhizomes densely caespitose) and number of stigmas (two vs. three). The glabrous nerveless utricles of the three South American species distinguish them from the North American species of the section, which have scabrid to hispidulous, conspicuously nerved utricles. The formal ascription of C. lepida among the South American members of section Schiedeanae is also discussed. A brief key to distinguish C. lepida and C. roalsoniana from the other species of the section and the co-occurring species is provided.

A new species, Varronia teguorum Fern. Alonso & J.I.M. Melo (Cordiaceae), from central Colombia is described. This new taxon is compared morphologically with V. subtruncata and V. bullata, the species with which it is most easily confused. An identification key for the Varronia species with globose inflorescences from Colombia/northern South America is presented.

In this paper we re-evaluate Cyanallagma Kennedy 1920, which currently includes 15 species, and we address another five species that share diagnostic characters with some of them but are currently placed within Leptagrion Selys 1876, Mesamphiagrion Kennedy 1920, and Telagrion Selys 1876. A new genus, Oreiallagma, is described to include five species originally placed in Acanthagrion Selys 1876, Cyanallagma, and Telagrion. These species are O. thelkterion (De Marmels 1997) (type species), O. acutum (Ris 1918), O. oreas (Ris 1918), O. prothoracicum (Kimmins 1945), and O. quadricolor (Ris 1918). The last stadium larva of O. quadricolor is described. The remaining species currently includedin Cyanallagma are allocated to two separate genera: Cyanallagma sensu stricto and Mesamphiagrion. Cyanallagma sensu stricto comprises southern South American species including the type species, Cyanallagma interruptum (Selys 1876). Mesamphiagrion Kennedy 1920 includes a cluster of species from northwestern South America that are considered congeneric with the type species Mesamphiagrion occultum (Ris 1918). Two new species from Ecuador, M. dunklei and M. ecuatoriale, are described and Argia hebdomatica Navás 1934 is found to be a junior synonym of M. ovigerum (Calvert 1909). Synonymic lists, diagnoses, illustrations, keys, and distribution maps for the three genera are provided.
