Description of a new species of Characidium Reinhardt, 1867 (Characiformes: Crenuchidae) from the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, and redescription of Characidium bimaculatum Fowler, 1941

A new species of Characidium Reinhardt, 1867 endemic to tributaries of the upper rio Paraguaçu in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners except C. bahiense, C. bimaculatum, C. laterale, C. nana, C. nupelia, and C. xavante, by having a conspicuous peduncular blotch in addition to the basicaudal spot on the base of the middle caudal-fin rays. Among other features, the new species differs from C. bahiense, C. laterale, C. nana, C. nupelia, and C. xavante by having a complete lateral line with 32–36 perforated scales (vs. lateral line short, with 9–11 perforated scales), and from C. bimaculatum by the body pigmentation pattern, with secondary bars present (vs. absent), total bars 11–16 (vs. 10–12), peduncular blotch rounded (vs. horizontally elongated), and mature males not having a darker dorsal fin (vs. proximal third of dorsal fin darker in mature males). Characidium bimaculatum, a poorly known species from Northeastern Brazil, is redescribed.

A new species of nemacheilid, Physoschistura dikrongensis, is described from the Brahmaputra basin in ArunachalPradesh, India. It is easily distinguishable from congeners in having two V-shaped dark brown bars across the caudal fintowards the distal end; 11–15 irregular bars on the body; dark brown mottled markings on the head; 4 simple and 8½branched dorsal-fin rays; 4 simple anal-fin rays; an incomplete lateral line; a forked caudal fin with 8+7 branched rays; a well-developed axillary pelvic lobe; suborbital flap in males, and nine preoperculo-mandibular sensory canal pores.

Hyphessobrycon oritoensis (Characiformes: Characidae) is described from the Putumayo River drainage of the Colombian Amazon. The new species belongs to the H. heterorhabdus group and is distinguished from all other known species by the following combination of characters: iii,8 dorsal–fin rays, iv, 26–27 anal–fin rays, 19 teeth on dentary, 35 scales in longitudinal series, 10–11 perforated scales in lateral line, 7 scales between lateral line and dorsal–fin origin, 14 predorsal scales and a dark lateral band that extends from the posterior border of the humeral spot to the tips of the middle caudal fin rays.

A new species of Creagrutus is described from the Amazonian Piedmont, Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by presenting the following unique combination of characters: a dark mid-lateral stripe starting at anteriormost scale of lateral line, a vertically elongated humeral blotch, absence of dark blotches on dorsal fin and at base of middle caudal-fin rays, a triangular dentigerous surface of the premaxilla, 5–6 dentary teeth, and 11–12 predorsal scales. Comparisons with congeners distributed in the piedmont region of Río Caquetá basin are presented and its relationships among species of Creagrutus is inferred from the available phylogenetic framework.

Channa pardalis, a new species of snakehead, is described from Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, northeastern India.  This species can be distinguished from its congeners by a unique colour pattern consisting of numerous large black spots on the post-orbital region of the head, opercle and body; a broad white and black margin to the dorsal, anal and caudal fins; 36–37 dorsal fin rays; 24–25 anal fin rays; 44–45 pored scales on the body and two scales on the caudal fin base; 4½ scales above lateral line and 6½ scales below lateral line; 45 vertebrae and the palatine with two rows of teeth: outer row with numerous minute teeth and inner row with short, stout inward curved teeth.

A new species of Hemigrammus is described from the middle rio Tocantins basin, central Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by having a black midlateral stripe on the body extending from the posterior margin of the eye to the median caudal-fin rays. Mature males possess dorsal-, pelvic-, and anal-fin rays elongate, features that also help to recognize the new species. Although the new species is described in Hemigrammus, some specimens present a complete series of pored scales in the lateral line. A discussion about the generic allocation of the new species is presented.

The Pseudochromis reticulatus complex is diagnosed to include species of Pseudochromis with the combination of a pointed caudal fin (rounded with middle rays produced), a reticulated colour pattern on the upper part of the body, dorsal-fin rays modally III,26, anal-fin rays modally III,15, and pectoral-fin rays modally 18. Members of the complex include P. reticulatus Gill & Woodland, P. pictus Gill & Randall, P. tonozukai Gill & Allen, P. jace Allen, Gill & Erdmann and P. stellatus new species. The last-named is herein described from six specimens from Batanta and Batu Hitam in the Raja Ampat Islands, West Papua, Indonesia. It is distinguished from other members of the complex in live coloration, and in having higher mean numbers of scales in lateral series and of anterior lateral-line scales (36–38 and 29–32, respectively), and a deeper body as measured from the dorsal-fin origin to pelvic-fin origin (31.8–33.5 % SL).

Simpsonichtys lopesi n. sp. is described from a temporary pool located in the São Francisco river basin. This species is distinguished from remaining species, except S. adornatus, by the large number of dorsal fin rays, which makes possible a large dorsal fin base length that begins well anterior to the middle of the body, before the vertical line through the pelvic fin. This species differs from S. adornatus by the color pattern of the anal fin, which may have yellow stripes or light dots (vs. small light points), and also by the lower number of dorsal fin rays.

Knodus shinahota, new species, is described from río Shinahota, a tributary of the upper rio Mamoré basin, Província de Tiraque, Cochabamba State, Bolivia. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners except K. chapadae and K. geryi by having six rows of scales between the lateral line and the dorsal-fin origin (vs 4 or 5 rows of scales in the other species). Knodus shinahota differs from K. chapadae by possessing more rows of scales between the lateral line and the pelvic-fin origin (5 vs 3½ or 4, respectively) and more lateral line scales (38-41 vs 36-38, respectively). It differs from K. geryi by possessing more rows of scales between the lateral-line and the pelvic-fin origin (5 vs 4, respectively); fewer branched anal-fin rays (17-20 vs 15-17, respectively), and by lacking the two symmetric, large, dark, blotches on the basal portions of the caudal-fin lobes that characterize K. geryi.

Characidium samurai, a species of the family Crenuchidae apparently endemic to rio das Almas and rio Vermelho basins, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species is readily distinguishable from its congeners, except C. lanei, by having a dark lateral band along the head and body that is particularly broad from the rear of the head to the end of the caudal peduncle (1.5 or 2 scales wide) and by the absence of dark bars or blotches on the ventral half of the body. Characidium samurai differs from C. laneiby having the lateral band with straight borders overall (vs.lateral band with somewhat irregular borders due to blotches extending dorsally or ventrally), anal fin ii,7-8 (vs. ii,6), and 4 horizontal scale rows above the lateral line and 4 below (vs. 5/3). It further differs from congeners by a series of features, including isthmus completely covered by scales, lateral line complete with 34-37 perforated scales, 9 scales on the transversal line, 14 scale rows around the caudal peduncle, anal fin ii,7-8, and the absence of dark bars or spots on the fins, except by a faded dorsal-fin bar. The presence of pseudotympanum in four species of Characidium is discussed.

Garra hormuzensis, new species, is described from the Kol River drainage. It is distinguished from its congeners in the Iranian part of the Persian Gulf basin by having 7½ branched dorsal-fin rays, usually 9+8 branched caudal-fin rays, the breast, belly and back in front of the dorsal-fin origin covered by scales, and a free lateral and posterior margins of the gular disc. It is further characterised by having a minimum K2P distance of 1.16% to G. mondica in the mtDNA COI barcode region.
