A new species of Tricorythopsis is described, illustrated and diagnosed based on nymphs from Pará state, Brazil. Tricorythopsis similis sp. nov. is related to Tricorythopsis rondoniensis (Dias, Cruz & Ferreira) based on abdominal terga III–VII with acute tubercles medially located on posterior margins, and by the absence of the transversal line on operculate gill. However, the new species can be identified by the following combination of characteristics: general coloration yellowish brown, with blackish and purplish marks irregularly distributed; maxillary palp 1-segmented; segment II of labial palp shorter than segment I and longer than segment III; femora and tibiae with margins covered by long, pectinate setae; tarsal claws with 4 to 5 marginal denticles and 4+2 very small, submarginal denticles. This is the first species of Tricorythopsis recorded from Pará state.

Abstract A new species of Corumbataia is described from Rio Maranhão, Rio Tocantins basin, central Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a small, naked area on snout tip; by having the abdomen covered with small platelets forming a shield which reaches the lateral mid-ventral plates; by the anterior profile of the head rounded in dorsal view; by the lower lip not reaching the transversal line of the pectoral girdle; and by the presence of 28 or 29 vertebrae. High genetic divergence in mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) further supports the validity of this new species. Our phylogenetic analysis shows a derived subclade in Corumbataia, herein named as the Corumbataia cuestae group, composed of the new species plus C. cuestae, C. tocantinensis, C. britskii, C. liliai, and C. lucianoi. This group is defined by having a conspicuous crest of hypertrophied odontodes on head; absence of the adipose fin or a single series of platelets at adipose-fin position; and anastomosis of the infraorbital and otic sensory canals over the pterotic-supracleithrum. Here we also restrict the distribution of C. tocantinensis to the Rio Araguaia basin.

Characidium samurai, a species of the family Crenuchidae apparently endemic to rio das Almas and rio Vermelho basins, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species is readily distinguishable from its congeners, except C. lanei, by having a dark lateral band along the head and body that is particularly broad from the rear of the head to the end of the caudal peduncle (1.5 or 2 scales wide) and by the absence of dark bars or blotches on the ventral half of the body. Characidium samurai differs from C. laneiby having the lateral band with straight borders overall (vs.lateral band with somewhat irregular borders due to blotches extending dorsally or ventrally), anal fin ii,7-8 (vs. ii,6), and 4 horizontal scale rows above the lateral line and 4 below (vs. 5/3). It further differs from congeners by a series of features, including isthmus completely covered by scales, lateral line complete with 34-37 perforated scales, 9 scales on the transversal line, 14 scale rows around the caudal peduncle, anal fin ii,7-8, and the absence of dark bars or spots on the fins, except by a faded dorsal-fin bar. The presence of pseudotympanum in four species of Characidium is discussed.

Assuming the existence of tick parasitism in humans in the State of Pará, an aggregate observational study was developed along a transversal line in three cities of the State, during two years. Interviews and examinations of 2,160 townspeople and tourists were carried out, without discrimination of ethnic, sex, age, or social status, and classified for effects analyzed for four bands of age, six types of activities in the society, and two sexes. Larvae, nymphs, and adults of ticks had been identified with cases of parasitism involving six species, of the genus Amblyomma, the genus Ixodes, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Anocentor nitens, and Ornithodorus talaje (the first case registered in Pará), infecting human beings. Adults and agricultural workers were most frequently attacked, followed by students. A. cajennense and R. sanguineus are the species most frequent in the parasitism affecting humans, and A. cajennense is the dominant species. The statistical prevalence was largest in Cachoeira do Arari, Ilha do Marajó. In Santarém the greatest average intensity of parasitism was for R. sanguineus, and in the other locations it wasfor A. cajennense. Agricultural workers faced the greatest risk from parasitism, and to place in practice elementary measures of prevention would reduce by 25% the number of cases.

Two new species of genus Leporinus from the Araguaia-Tocantins system, Amazon, Brazil, are described. Leporinus unitaeniatus n. sp. is distinguished from the remaining species of this genus by the presence of a conspicuous longitudinal dark brown bar along the lateral line on the flanks, and Leporinus geminis n. sp. is distinguished by an inconspicuous dark bar combined with three large and vertically elongated brown blotches on the trunk; the first on the dorsal fin region, the second anterior to the adipose fin and the third on the caudal peduncle. Both are medium-sized species of the genus (up to 150 mm SL) and share the following combination of meristic characters: 4 teeth on each premaxillary and dentary; 40-43 scales in the lateral line, 6/I/5 scales on the transversal line, and 16 series of scales around the caudal peduncle. L. unitaeniatus n. sp. has a sub-terminal mouth and tooth series formed by incisive-like elongated teeth frontally turned and with only a straight cutting edge decreasing in size like the steps of stairs from the teeth pair of symphysis. Leporinus geminis n. sp. has a sub-inferior mouth and the tooth series shaped by large incisive-like teeth forming an arched cutting edge, decreasing in size from the symphysal pair of teeth.

A new species of the genus Leporinus is described from the rio Araguaia, in Mato Grosso and Goiás states, Brazil. The new species has the dental formula 4/3, a unique feature within the genus; all other species of Leporinus have dental formulae 3/3, 3/4 or 4/4. In addition, the new species can also be distinguished by the following combination of characters: 36 to 37 scales in the lateral line, 4/4.5 or 4/5 series of scales in the transversal line, 16 circumpeduncular scale series, anal fin surpassing base of lower caudal-fin rays and three blotches along the lateral line. The new species shares with L. parae and L. lacustris a rather deep body, terminal mouth, long anal fin, three small dark blotches on the lateral line, the latter two, particularly the last one, usually fading, and preference for lentic habitats. Comments on the taxonomy and distribution of the species L. parae and L. lacustris are provided.

We examined the space and temporal distributions of the rotatory evoked brain electrical activity patterns (brain electrical activity mapping of vestibular evoked potentials [VestEP]) in humans. We performed a longitudinal scalp line analysis, transversal line analysis, and clockwise/counterclockwise rotation analysis of the VestEP principal components in 75 healthy persons aged 22 to 30 years (mean: 25.8). We found that the shortest VestEP latencies and the highest amplitudes were registered in a relatively distinct cortical area that is covered by the transversal electrode line T3-C3-Cz-C4-T4, in accordance with the 10/20 international electrode scheme. This area corresponds to the posterior part of the frontal lobe (Brodmann's area 4, the primary motor field of the isocortex) and the anterior parts of the cerebral parietal lobe (the gyrus postcentralis, which corresponds to the primary somatosensory fields, Brodmann's areas 1, 2, and 3). In this article, we discuss a method of investigation that exhibits the VestEPs, and we review one normal case and three typical cases of pathologic VestEPs.

Adult human subjects (8 male, 8 female undergraduates) with normal vision were required to judge various orientations of the Poggendorff illusion. The transversal and parallel line-segments of the illusion were manipulated to produce the orientations to be judged. Minimum illusion occurred when the transversal line-segment was oriented 90° with respect to true vertical or true horizontal. Magnitude of illusion increased as the transversal line-segment deviated from these positions. The findings suggested that there is a stability of horizontal and vertical orientations. In addition, the hypothesis that visual acuity plays a role in the perception of the Poggendorff illusion was proposed.
