Description and DNA barcoding of Lycenchelys lenzeni, a new species of eelpout (Perciformes: Zoarcidae) from the deep sea off the Kuril Archipelago

A new species of eelpout genus Lycenchelys Gill, 1884 is described based on seven specimens caught at a depth of about 2350 m in the Bussol Strait, southwest of the Kuril Island Simushir. The species differs from its congeners in the following combination of characters: vertebrae 26–28 + 100–102 = 126–130; interorbital and occipital pores absent; postorbital pores 3–4; suborbital pores 7 (rarely 6); preoperculomandibular pores 4 + 4; gill rakers 11–16; dorsal fin rays 118–122; anal fin rays 105–108; pelvic fin rays 2; middle and lower ray tips of pectoral fin very slightly exserted; lateral line double with mediolateral and ventral branches; pyloric caeca not developed. The new species is morphologically most similar to Lycenchelys micropora and Lycenchelys jordani, which differ from the new species in having three pelvic-fin rays (vs. two pelvic-fin rays in the new species). L. micropora has the pectoral-fin origin below body midline, whereas the new species has the pectoral-fin origin at body midline. Middle and lower ray tips of pectoral fin are very slightly exserted in L. lenzeni sp. nov., whereas they are well exserted in L. jordani and L. micropora. Mitochondrial COI sequences were analyzed from four paratype specimens and all show the same haplotype sequence. The DNA barcodes allowed discrimination of L. lenzeni sp. nov. from other species of Lycenchelys where sequence data were available. The nearest match with already published sequences was Lycenchelys antarctica, with a sequence similarity of 98.25%, followed by Lycenchelys aratrirostris (sequence similarities 97.95–97.96%) and L. jordani (sequence similarity of 97.81%).

Abstract A new species of miniature fish of the characid genus Priocharax is described from a small lake near the rio Ipixuna, rio Purus drainage, Amazonas State, Brazil. It is distinguished from all congeners except P. pygmaeus by the lower number of teeth on the maxilla and dentary. It differs from P. pygmaeus by the presence of two postcleithra and 22–27 branched anal-fin rays (vs absence and 19–22). The new species is further distinguished from other species of Priocharax by a combination of characters involving the number of pelvic-fin rays and branched anal-fin rays, the number of postcleithra, the shape of postcleithrum 3, and the absence of the claustrum. Molecular evidence based on COI sequences of all valid species of Priocharax also corroborates the validity of this new species.

A new species, Baetis pentaphyllus sp. nov., is described on the basis of larvae from the Far East of Russia (type locality Bolshoi Garmakan River). Larvae of Baetis pentaphyllus sp. nov. may be distinguished from other Baetis species by the presence of only five pairs of tergalii on segments III–VII. The mitochondrial COI sequence obtained from the described species was compared with the data present in GeneBank and BOLD. The DNA barcodes allowed discrimination of B. pentaphyllus sp. nov. from other species of Baetis with available sequence data. The average interspecific K2P distances were 10–15%, which are values well above those associated with intraspecific variation. COI sequences as well as 36 morphological larval characters were analysed using Bayesian inference to relate the described species to the recognized species-groups of the Baetis genus. B. pentaphyllus sp. nov formed a sister clade to B. vardarensis + B. lutheri which belong to the Baetis lutheri species-group.

ABSTRACT A new species of Characidium is described based on specimens obtained from the highland streams of the Serra do Mar, Atlantic Forest Biome, in Paraná State, Southern Brazil. The new species is possibly a member member of the C. lauroi group, which is diagnosed by having the isthmus unscaled, bars poorly marked, and spots on sides of body, and is composed by four additional species: C. japuhybense ; C. lauroi ; C. oiticicai ; and C. schubarti . The new species differs from its congeners with naked isthmus, except C. helmeri , by having 15-18 principal caudal-fin rays; and 10-12 pectoral-fin rays; and from C. helmeri , by having a slender body, tip of pectoral fin not reaching origin of pelvic fin, tip of pelvic fin not reaching beyond anus, supraorbital present and well developed, and by lacking vertically elongated dashes on sides of body. The new species is known from tributaries of the rio Jordão, in the rio Iguaçu Basin, and rio Taquari, a tributary of the rio Ribeira de Iguape coastal drainage.

Homatula coccinocola, new species, is described from a Red River affluent in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan, China. The combination of a fully scaled body, a notched lower jaw, 4+42–44 vertebrae, 11 pectoral-fin and 8 pelvic-fin rays, and a color pattern of 16–19 brown, somewhat straight and vertically solid bars on a beige background distinguishes the new species from its congeners. The generic diagnosis of Homatula is revised.

A new species of argentinid fish, Glossanodon macrocephalus Bineesh & Endo, from the Arabian Sea, off the southwestern coast of India, is described on the basis of four specimens (129–164 mm SL). The new species clearly differs from its congeners in the following combination of characters: dorsal-fin rays 10–11; pectoral-fin rays 21–23; anal-fin rays 12–13; pelvic-fin rays 11–12; branchiostegal rays 5; gill rakers on first arch 30–36; vertebrae 47–48; a patch of small conical teeth on middle of lower jaws; predorsal 49–51% SL; prepectoral 36–39% SL; prepelvic 57–58% SL; distance from pelvic to anal-fin origin 26–28% SL; head length 35–39% SL; eye diameter 22–26% HL; snout length 28–30% HL; location of anus immediately anterior to anal-fin origin; broad longitudinal black stripe above lateral line; dark spot on the base to half of pectoral fin; and no teeth on tongue. The new species is a benthopelagic dweller on muddy bottoms in depths of around 300–600 m.

The species Clupisoma roosae, new species, is recorded from the upper Irrawaddy River, Myanmar. This species can be distinguished from its sole congener in Myanmar, Clupisoma prateri Hora, 1937, in having a shorter pectoral-fin spine that does not extend past the pelvic-fin origin, a reduced abdominal keel that extends anteriorly only to the level of the pelvic-fin base, only 11 pectoral-fin rays and 45 to 47 branched anal-fin rays. Although the two species occur in the Irrawaddy River, they have not been collected together and appear to inhabit different portions of the river basin. Clupisoma prateri is distributed in the lower and middle reaches of the Irrawaddy River as well as the nearby Sittang, Bago, and Salween rivers, while C. roosae appears to be restricted to the upper reaches of the Irrawaddy. To facilitate comparisons between the two species of Clupisoma in Myanmar, C. prateri is redescribed.

Pimelodus multicratifer, a new species, is described from the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin. The new species differs from the other Pimelodus species by the following features: 26 to 30 gill rakers on the first branchial arch; a combination of three to six rows of dark spots regularly or irregularly scattered on the flanks and several small dark spots irregularly scattered on the dorsal surface of head, supraoccipital process, and sometimes on the dorsal and caudal fins; striated lips; maxillary barbels reaching between posterior tip of the pelvic-fin rays and posterior tip of the middle caudal-fin rays.

A new species of ptereleotrine dartfish, Navigobius asayake, is described based on four specimens (45.0–52.1 mm in standard length: SL) collected from off the Satsuma Peninsula and Tanegashima island, Kagoshima, southern Japan. It is distinguished from other congeners by the following combination of characters: second dorsal-fin rays I, 18–19; anal-fin rays I, 19; pectoral-fin rays 21–22; gill rakers 5–6 + 13–15; head length 25.1–26.4% SL; eye diameter 8.6–10.0% SL; pelvic-fin length 15.2–16.1% SL; and a well-developed yellow stripe extending from behind upper part of eye to beneath first dorsal fin.

A new species of Ituglanis is described from rio Iratapuru, near the rio Jari, Amapá, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the reduced number of post-Weberian apparatus vertebrae (36 or 37); the low number of paired ribs (2); the low number of interopercular odontodes (12–15); the number of branchiostegal rays (7 or 8); the presence of elongated fontanel in parieto-supraoccipital; the pectoral-fin rays (i,5); head length (18.9–25.0); and the presence of pores supraorbital s1, infraorbitals i1 and i3 of the laterosensory system. The new taxon has a reduced body size and fully ossified skeleton, but does not display a large number of paedomorphic traits compared to congeners. Comments about taxonomy and intrageneric comparisons are made, and paedomorphic in Ituglanis is discussed. Thoughts about conservation of the new species are presented.

A new characid species, Jupiaba elassonaktis, is described from the rio Tocantins drainage. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: medial cusps of premaxillary teeth much larger than remaining cusps, dentary teeth decreasing abruptly in size from the fifth tooth backwards, first dorsaland anal-fin rays not prolonged by an elongate filament, presence of a vertically elongate humeral spot, 33–39 scales on lateral line, 5–7 scales series above lateral line, 9–11 pectoral-fin rays, and a incomplete series of median predorsal scales.
